Yeah, In the doc' the DU & the dying children the phd nucphysicists measured 60% uranium content in the dust fraction in residential sites bombed a year earlier. Their radiation meters were measuring 25000x allowable limits for habitation some 5 meters from the crater and sounding audible alarms to "leave the area immediately" (They had to smuggle their counters in as America has blocked the importation of radiation detectors since 1991. If they had been spotted using them by US troops (in 2004!) they would have been arrested and deported.) Oh, hydrophobic nature of ceramicised U0 and fact that aerosol size particles flow with the air around raindrops mean that water has little effect in burying it anyway.
-
Bollocks! U in coal is finely divided soluble ionic salts ( probably to the level of single u ions). There is no way this could form the hard glassy ceramic particles formed by burning uranium metal.

I'm finding it more than a little suspicious that a Canadian is prepared to devote so much time to defending the safety of large scale use of DU. After all the cheaper, safer, easier to build CANDU reactors used by Canada require no uranium enrichment and therefore there is little need to find a way to dispose of large quantities of DU nuclear waste. The US propaganda that has buried CANDU sales under a crappile of claims that you have to enrich U for Nuke power has seen Canada sell only ~20 CANDU's compared to some 5000 of their expensive and dangerous light water reactors. Are you really from Canada? Are you certain you are not a spin doctor for the US nuclear industry? None of your attempts to belittle and discredit me seem like the word's of a true scientist, or are based on any objective examination of my figures.

DV8, unlike yourself I do not believe that the personal reputation of the scientist is more important than easily verifiable objective data. I did not remove any ID details from this page, simply converted it in entirety to word when sfn rejected the html attachment. Please ask yourself if your objectivity as a scientist is compromised by your insistance on branding and discarding any fact based studies of the very large sample Iraq experiment as activist "propaganda wrapped in a tissue of science."

Re post79/80 You appear a realist mr Kirby. Methinks this DV8 doth protest too much.

Um, my data on neutron production by Al hit by alphas shows 1 n per 500 000 ish alphas. Might increase the yield in a bomb but can't see the value in taking a chain reaction past parity. Photonuclear alpha production is simularly low yield and only really kicks at higher energies.
-
when the reactor radius is more than 25cm, Neutrons produced at the centre cannot escape. I spoke to the head of nuclear physics at Auckland University today. He was adamant that he wouldn't get within 100 paces of the uncoated oxidising blocks of U in airliners, though would not be concerned if one was in a plastic bag. (inhalation risk)

Its easy to find data illustrating that the vast majority of energy from either an A or H bomb comes from fast fission of the U238 Tamper. The purpose of the deuterium is simply to increase the neutron flux and yield. The CANDU reactor does achieve most of its energy from the 0.7% of 235 in natural uranium through slow neutrons moderated by the heavy water coolant. The fission of pu 239 is not significant compared to fast fission of U238 until a fair way into the fuel cycle. Certainly it should be easy to make a low tech pu breeder out of the DU in one airliner (u235 content 0.35%).

I certainly do not claim that the major hazard from DU is Nuetrons (yor speling Jdurk). I included this data because its ludicrous to plead that U238 does not emit Neutrons when it is the strongest natural n emiter (actually 35 x U235 - I misunderestimated this in my previous post). The 700 million kg of DU in temporary storage in the US may well constitute a neutron hazard as n's are nearly uncontainable and transmute enviromental atoms into short half life isotopes. (after they've finished ionising 100,000 odd molecules per n) Probably the damage in Iraq is being done mostly by Alpha's 63,400,000 alphas per kg U per second (each Alpha has energy to ionise up to a million organic molecules). =5 x 10 –5 joules per second 0.05 sv is max legal for 1 year by nuclear industry worker) or 2.5 x 10-3 grays (joules per kg) of alphas (alpha’s are considered 20x as destructive as Gamma rays per joule). In a 50 kg person this dose would be .125 joules per year, 4 x 10-9 J per second. 0.00008kg =0.08 g of uranium 238 can produce this dose in 1 year (actually its much worse for ingested U because the dose affects maybe 1% of body mass in critical areas. (note that military DU is at least 10x this active).

Thanks for biting From the tone of your posts Jdurg I'm tempted to consider you a glib little holocaust denialist. If in fact you are not then please educate yourself with the previously mentioned video, "The Doctor (german nuclear physics professors) the du and the dying children" US distributors: Traprock Peace Center 103A Keets Road, Deerfield, MA 01342 (413) 773-7427 http://www.traprockpeace.org Would your organization like to co-sponsor a public showing of this film in your area? Traprock Peace Center has exclusive rights in the US for public, non-theatrical showings. Contact Sunny Miller - 413-773-7427 - if you wish to show this film in the US. 1 kg u238 produces 5 spontaneous fissions per second releasing about 12 neutrons per second. This is 15 times more than U235. The 1500 kg of U in a 747 therefore releases 567,648,000,000 Neutrons per year by sp + at least the same amount from alpha interaction with the surrounding Al structure + induced fission events . All commercial airliners are now used in this fashion as nuclear waste storage / slow Pu breeder reactors (including the 911 4). Iraqs inhabited area now contains average of around 5g per square meter uranium from US munitions (enough to kill 50 people). At least 20% of this is aerosol sized ceramicised oxide from high temp combustion that when inhaled has a bio half life of 10 years plus. 0.1g of this stuff is almost definate to cause severe symptoms such as fatal cancer. (Burnt DU has therefore simular toxicity to VX or Sarin nerve gas, but never goes away) Note that 150,000 gw1 troops have such severe symptoms theyve been declared invalids from a 90 day exposure to 100 times less U than used in gw2. Cancer rates Iraq wide are now 15X and SEVERE birth defects 25x 2years ago and will not peak for at least 10yrs. There are I million new Cancer cases diagnosed in the last year alone in Iraq, despite almost no access to medical facilities for most of their population. "The Doctor, The DU and The Dying Children" is an excellent and up to date doco on this situation that I do not hesitate to call the worst atrocity ever commited by humans against each other. oh- DU is 75% as radioactive as natural uranium metal 1 year after manufacture, and both are 10x more radioactive than when refined.
