well if you put iron in a CuCl2 solution a displacement reaction occurs, so as the iron dissoves to iron chloride, the copper come's out of the solution, plating the iron. hope this helps.
-
Thanks thats cool Don't they also sell CaCl2 hydrate in them big bags of salt for deicing your driveway, if so you could just heat it to anhydrous and then use that as a dessicator , that way you get a Whole bunch for cheap. Right?

ok thanks

ok thanks:-) Merged post follows: Consecutive posts mergedi also have a question about iron II chloride. I have a rusty iron rail road spike so i put in some hydrochloric acid and the solution is a yellow color can i evaporate this on a hotplate outside to get anhydrous ironII chloride? Merged post follows: Consecutive posts mergedby the way i already heated some in a hotplate and the dry powder is dark redish brown.

ok thanks how about a warm oven? or is it too toxic? because its the same oven i cook in. also it seems like alot of chloride salts are hygroscopic why is this?

I made some copper chloride out of pure copper wire and HCL and H2O2. the solution dissolved all the copper and turned dark green, so then i wanted to get rid of all the hcl that was left so i boild it till it was dry then i rehydrated it with water so i could do recrystalization to get a cleaner product. But when it evaporated there were no crystals just a real dark green thick syrupy liquid, did i do something wrong? Thanks.

i have real recently just become so interested in chemistry. i have been thinking about starting an element collection. i found this forum on the site today and was pretty excited. i don't have any yet to trade, but i would be so appreciative if any one had a little extras to donate. really appreciative! thanks

Now thats nasty haha.

Hi i have a question about predicting the reactivity of an element with an acid. So i know that copper will not react with HCL but zinc will. I know this because i put the two elements in HCL and seen that copper wont react and zinc will. so my question is how can i predict if an element will react with an acid before i do an experiment. And please don't say look it up on google, thanks. Merged post follows: Consecutive posts mergedMaybe I didn't ask that right, so I will ask the same question a tiny bit different. So for example if i wanted to know if copper would react with acetic acid, hydrochloric acid, and nitric acid, how could i figure this out on the periodic table?
-
Well im not really sure, maybe the nitric acid or the really reactive metals but im not that sure. but it should not be much of a problem with nitric acid because you can make that pretty easy and just use what you make and don't store it up you should be fine. but i could help you out more if you could give me a list of chemicals you want to buy, and what state you live in. by the way do you live in a big city?

Good news i opened the bottle to get a better look and its not green at all there is no color its super clear and works great. i got 2 galons of it for 10 bucks. it must have ben the bottle that was sorry guys but thanks for answering anyway.

Well if you live in the USA then United Nuclear is good. It is an online store but they sell lots of cool stuff like pure chemicals, special glassware, even cool elements like uranium, sodium, calcium, potassium,. the only bad thing is the shipping is a bit high but thats expected, Well anyway its a great store but it ships to USA only.

go to ace hardware they sell good 98% sulfuric acid. its called Rooto pro drain opener concentrated sulfuric acid. its very clear color and its cheap to:D
-
yeah i will do that. thanks guys Merged post follows: Consecutive posts mergedhey guys 1 more question how much baking soda to neutralize 100 ml of 15% HCL. thanks
-
do you think i can get away with using the impure HCL? because it takes me two weeks to purify only 100 ml of HCL.
-
Should i purify it? my method of purification would turn 31% HCL in to 15% reagent grade, witch is good but will only 15% work for making chlorides from metal? like zinc, tin and aluminum?
-
i bought some 31%hydrochloric acid from the home depot for the first time and i notice its has a tiny bit of greenish color to it is this normal?

I am very interested in in elements and there compounds. so as i collect elements i also take some of that element and make some of its compounds for sample collecting. it may not sound like it but its a really fun hobby for me. But now i want some different acids so i can make more compounds. I am done with common acids like Hydrochloric acid, acetic acid, sulfuric acid, and citric acid. So here is my question does anyone know of some acids i could get to make some compounds for my hobby. Here is two examples of the kind of acids i am looking for Lactic acid and gluconic acid. So if anyone knows some acids i can use to make cool compounds please let me know thank you. ps: I know its alot but before you answer please read the hole thing.
-
thanks for answering also do you know how i can get a pure lactic acid I heard you can get it by fermentation of pure lactose sugar in water but how do i do that
-
Ok thanks UC thats interesting. did i still make copper acetate though?
-
Please answer if you know this is important to me.

HI So you know when you add copper to vinegar it does nothing but when you add 3% H2O2 to the vinegar and heat it reacts with copper to form copper acetate. But i just read that a solution of acetic acid and H2O2 is peracitic acid ok so does that mean the copper acetate i have made is really copper peracetate. And if so what is the difference. Thank you.
