probably (I`m guessing here) caveman days and middle ages. the smart ones would know where to hit a dinosaur for a kill, or become a rich man and afford soldiers and the like. Merlin did alright for himself as an Alchemist as did the Witch doctors or "wisemen". as for accidents or disease,,, I guess that`s what he meant by "up to a point"? I guess it even applies today in some ways, the "smart" get ritch, the rich have more kids coz they can and don`t have to worry about finaces etc... or Lawyers (spit) they do pretty good for themselves too different types of "Smart" I guess?

Oh I dunno, that Zena chick`s pretty sweet Mmmmm... eye candy

how do you work that out? acceletartion is a function of increasing velocity over time. some famous guy said something that a body in motion will remain in motion until acted upon by another force (or something like that?) in this ball idea, it`s a closed system, there are no external forces acting upon it. so it can never increase it`s velocity (accelerate) over time. what you put in, is what you get out. it can only accelerate while it`s in your hand (your putting something IN). and when it begins to fall again (transitionalising between potential to kinetic). I hope we`re not talking about the Universe expanding at an increased rate or some such thing? I was looking at this as a closed system and not a trick question!?
-
LOL, but then folks will start talking about me, saying I ask too many questions I can`t see how you anyone could rule out potential and kinetic energies and the transtitions between them in this acceleration question, to my understanding, the ball only accelerates while it`s in your hands and also while it begins to fall from it`s max height. perhaps I don`t know enough? I`m not really all that into physics, but his question intrigued me, so I sought to solve it with my limited but not non-existant knowledge (I love stuff like this) so I see: ball in hand arm accelerating the ball upwards (kinetic) hand lets go, ball decelerates (still kinetic) ball reaches max height and stops (kinetic becomes potential) potential them becomes kinetic after and undefined moment and accelerates again. ball hits hand and transfers the energy of the original arm swing back into the hand and arm. acceleration occurs twice to my understanding.
-
perhaps it`s just me being over simplistic, but I figured through conservation laws stating that energy cannot be created or destroyed only changed, that in effect your ball would be like a "capacitor" or rechargable battery, you throw the ball up with say units 10 of energy and barring energy losses through air friction as heat, you`ll get exactly 10 units back out as a whack when it hits your hand after catching it. to accelerate I understood as the constant application of force over time. the ball to me would only actualy be accelrating while it`s still in your hand up until the point you let go, then it has all the energy it`s going to have. My point being, that it will only accelerate at the transition point of potential to kinetic energy.Gravity in this instance can be treated as rubber band or the like, Air friction ignored, and Time is arbitrary also as specific units.

hey Greg1971, just for you, my old Icon`s free now mate but I thought mine looked better I`de like to know, why when I looked at this forum on my mates computer some of the Avatar/icons were animated, I like Sayonaras yet they`re all motionless on mine, I`m on windoze 98, do I need some sort of plugin for IE? Daisy, How about a snapshot of Daisy Duke from the Dukes of Hazzard? (what a Babe!)

forgive my simplistic veiw, but I`ve read so far and only understand 1 or 2 posts (never could get my head around Physics). but I remmember something about the ball changing energy from Kinetic (moving) and Potential when it`s at its peak (0 velocity). so the telefone has Potential energy as the ball does. or that something entirely different?
-
probably because it`s a SCIENCE forum

Hmmm... He Is from another country, and I think he did remmarkably well to meet us in our own language I wonder,,, how many languages do you speak KHinfcube22?

How was the "big bang" triggered?

my personal Opinion, is that matter was being brought into and out of existance all the time, and it had like forever to do it as well. I picture the point of pure nothingness or Zero as being a point so fine as to be unatanable, a bit like ballancing a ball on an infinately sharp needle, the ball will fall, but the direction is unknown. When sufficient matter came into being gravity took over and the matter imploded (a bit like a super nova but bigger!), at that point when gravity and time came about it made the matter impossible to be put back to Zero again, as it would be out of phase with it`s origin. that`s how I see it anyway and it has no real basis in known science, it`s just my opinion. if nothing else, I find it interesting to picture. -
YT= Yours Truly, 2095 is a year. I`ll let you all guess about the rest, Im in a Cryptic m00d today

do a Google search for "first ionisation energy" too, that`ll help a little another more simple way, think of it as Gasses so hot that they glow.

You`re exactly right! (in my case espescialy, I`m already on heart medication and I`m only young) and yet people seem to be "sellective" about the odds and although what you say is 100% true, many will still go out and eat all the wrong foods because THAT PARTICULAR probability somehow doesn`t apply to them hardly makes any sense at all really ? )

lens type: D=60mm F=700mm by Tasco that`s about all I can say really, it came with 3 different objective lenses, a prism `L` bend and a 3x Barlow lens. It`s nothing fancy, but it`s great for ordinary things, Moon, Saturn, Mars etc...

Kedas, what`s your mirror diameter on that telescope you have? I`ve been interested in trying one of those myself, but haven`t come across one cheap enuogh yet and if you don`t mind me asking how much was it? and what magnification is it? also your quite right about the blur aspect, it CAN be a bit tricky untill you get used to it, I find that investing in a GOOD tripod will be worth it`s weight in gold too, nothing worse than shakes when on a HIx mag and your trying to track something!

The odd part is, and I expect it`s something to do with the Human Psyche, that we`ll see a number that huge (probabilities) and no matter HOW HUGE the odds are against, some will always worry, I say this, because it doesn`t just apply to the BAD things, No Sir!. who playes the national lottery here? the UK lotto is a 1 in 14 million chance of winning, and yet millions of people will still play AND expect to win (else they wouldn`t play I guess?). fact is (myself included) that even though I KNOW the odds, I still get a bit excited when the numbers come around and no matter how many times I`ve lost in the past, I still play? I strongly suspect it`s something to do with our inability to comprehend such VAST numbers above what you see when it`s writen as 1:14,000,000 against.

Will Man ever become extinct??

probably be better to die in the 1`st blast I guess I`m a survivalist sure, but I`m a realist also and faced with the options, I wanna be right under it with my base ball glove and a beer! -
maybe not so far fetched if you think along the lines of a pre-built nuclear reactor in a Submarine or ship for example? A full scale one would be a triffle ambitios sure but something modular and small would be possible even with todays technology, getting it there might be fun though
-
Unless of course another smaller object hits it and sends it right at us? alot can happen in 10.3 years at those speeds! Muhahahahaaa sleep well

Suppose there were a crew aboard the ISS at the time an asteroid wiped us out like the one due in 2014, would it effect their orbit in anyway? or would here (Earth) just be a not so place to come back down to? the one in 2014 will miss us (not by much) but it will -
You didn`t state what country your from, so some of my references may not mean much, but here in the UK, you can buy a pretty respectable Telescope from a place called Argos, Index are also good. also have a look around car boot sales (garrage sales if yer USA) you often find good deals there. I use a little 500x lens type scope from a company called TASCO. I can see the rings of Saturn with that quite well and it only cost me about £80 brand new, I`m sure you could get something cheaper second hand, maybe in a newspaper free advert section? but you`ll find that 500x magnification or above would be great as a 1`st telescope

well in that case I`ll stand corrected, I was unaware of this Appendix function.

Neat machines I`ve seen similar effect in vibratory seives, used for seperating ingredients into different mesh sizes (pyrothechnic use) they make paterns too, a bit like sand dunes I`ve done a similar thing with an 18" sub and polystyrene balls hooked up to a sig-gen, get the right freq and they seem to stay almost still, alter it a bit and the patern changes and some freq`s all hell breaks loose and they get chaotic and start bouncing out. I recon it would make a neat excutive toy for a desktop if you could make it look good with lots of chrome and perspex

Oh well... so much for "bennefit of the doubt" and waiting for the drug effects to wear off, I said I`de leave this thread many posts ago, nothings changed it would seem. the YT`s outa here!

I wonder if the stuff he`s on is actualy legal?
