Fascinating and counterintuitive. Just wanted to share.

Stupid question here: why does the shutdown cost money? To me, it is a saving for the federal government not having to pay the salaries. And it is a loss for the private sector because the total amount of salaries will not be spend in the economy*. So to me it is a transfer of money between the private & public sector, as if the government took money from the private sector. Is that what everyone call "cost money"? * also the same amount will not be taxed, which is a loss for the government, to be removed from the savings.

Don't trust these numbers. When Troika came to Greece ans asked the government "how many public employees do you have" the simple answer was "we don't know". It took some months to discover the real number (and agree on what a "public employee is". In this official paper from the European Union Presidency 2010, the public employees are* (see page 7 of the link) In Greece, when you add medical staff, teachers, academics and also all employees from local administrations (counties etc.) you must multiply the number by three. Instead of the 371 thousands mentioned in the survey (page 7), the public sector is (was) above a million. When you have about 10% of the population (not % of the workforce) I assure you that in the western world you have a problem. In fact the politic of the Socialist Party in the 80's and afterwards was to put as much as possible people in the public sector, giving secure work* and getting votes in return, while using the "stupid" capitalistic system that allows to get loans indefinitely. *the Constitution forbids to dismiss a public employee. ----------------------------------------- In fact, the capitalistic system was not stupid at all. When a bank gives a loan, the money does not exist. The money is accounted as a negative sum because someone took it and must pay back with interests of course. So in fact every time someone gets a loan, money is created. When the loan is payed back of course, with interests, the money is real. The money is then the result of some work. At this moment the Greek people are asked to pay back (with hard work) money created from thin air by bankers. And as time goes by, the money gets more and more because of the mathematical exponential curve (see previous post). This game is played all over the world. There are today some "miracle-countries" where investments are huge, where big loans are given with great facility. Wait and see.

What law says that? If they want to provide their service for free, they can't? They will be arrested and sentenced for servicing the Nation for free? What a strange country... If I understand clearly, the issue is that they won't be paid. The closing of the service is a consequence. In most private enterprises here a lot of people are not paid for months. They continue to work though. Till when, it depends.

I disagree with your analysis. The "socialist party" I am talking about is the PASOK, which is The Socialist Party of Greece. Financial crime and tax evasion happens everywhere. What does not happen everywhere is a public sector of more than a million for a country of 10 millions. I agree that fascism cripples but I don't think this part of the past is relevant to today's situation. Not even today's fascist party tries to link to the previous period (the Junta) but directly to Hitler.

A list of Consequences of the US govt. Shut Down
michel123456 replied to CaptainPanic's topic in Politics
Wikipedia is up to date. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_federal_government_shutdown_of_2013 And history from 1995-1996 tells (quoted from wiki) Also waiting for Standard & Poor' s appreciation. -
I agree. They HAVE to find an agreement. The no-agreement and shut down should not be an option. It is like 2 men arguing in the street, hitting in the face all the people around, without even trying to hit each other. Today, Senators will get paid, Congressmen also. That is not fair. I don't understand your argument. Besides it does not matter the subject: The 2 parties involved are supposed to work for the Nation. At this moment they harm the Nation.

(emphasis mine. You wrote: "And on that point, I think the Tory's are playing it all wrong, as what they should be doing is spending like there's no tomorrow when in power to move phase or the point of greatest debt to when the other lot then regain power!" That's what the socialist party did in Greece. The other political party (the right wing) followed exactly the same tactic in-between and afterwards. And look where we are now. The U.S. citizens are not so far from Greece's situation. The only (and big) difference is that the U.S. are globally almighty while Greece is not.

1. What purpose a drawing at scale? If you don't draw an exact diagram you may get the wrong conclusions, look here for example. Velocity at scale: imagine the rain falls at excessively great speed (at SOL), then the rain always fall vertically because the walker's velocity is negligeable compared to the velocity of rain. On the other hand, if rain's velocity is near zero, then the rain falls nearly horizontally as observed by the walker and he gets wet all over. IOW the relation of vertical drops velocity and walker's velocity gives the angle in your diagram. 2. say yes, a vertical straight line that has a specific height. 3. the rain behind falls in 2 ways A the rain coming directly from the sky, falling at great velocity (nearly vertically for any walker's speed) and B the rain slipping from the umbrella with zero initial velocity at umbrella's edge falling at an angle observable on the diagram. 4. yes, drops falling from the perimeter. The object of the exercise is finally to find the largest dry volume, not the largest projection on the ground.
-
Some observations: 1. you should draw your diagram at scale, with real umbrella diameter and real height, real velocities. 2. draw a human walking inside. 3. draw the rain behind 4. in your diagram, the drops are only those falling directly from the sky, at maximum velocity (how much is that?). You should also put the other drops falling from the perimeter, at free fall beginning with v=0 at the perimeter, that is much slower than the other ones. If I am not abused, those slow drops will produce a CB slope much less that will intersect with the walker's feet.

The (very) bad part of the joke is that his father is a mathematician and scientist . (source wiki page about J.E. Holmes) Not funny.

You wrote: "So it becomes a race between the speed of the walker and the speed of falling drops." An umbrella does not absorb the water drops but displace them at the perimeter, creating a cylinder of water around the walker. So we are not talking about the falling drops from the sky only, but mainly the falling drops from the umbrella's perimeter. Which are quite slow: they are in simple free fall with negligeable initial speed at umbrella's edge. Also, the drops at umbrella's edge have now the same horizontal speed with the walker. In this case of figure, the horizontal umbrella gives the largest cylinder of water and Studiot is correct. In practice the drops from the edge do not fall with the same horizontal speed with the walker because the walker creates "wind" by its own displacement and the drops are falling inclined as observed by the walker. This fact does not change whether the umbrella is inclined or not (it changes slightly the height of the edge but who matters). Your head is protected by the umbrella but not your pants because your feet will get very close the water cone if you walk quickly. And also in practice it is almost impossible for the walker to keep the umbrella vertical because of the "wind" he creates being considered the shape of the umbrella. IOW in practice, the walker is obliged to keep the umbrella inclined not regarding at all the issue about the drops. The important thing is to keep your head dry.

Eclipse and the Accelleration of the Earth ?
michel123456 replied to Bjarne's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
IIRC an eclipse is not seen as such from everywhere on the globe. In order to get perfect alignment you need a very specific eclipse. And IIRC it is the Earth-Moon system that is orbiting the Sun, anyway. You can call me IIRC. -
You don't need PI to define a circle. That's it. The word "center" was not necessary. On a plane, a circle is all the points equidistant to a point. A sphere has almost the same definition, not on a plane but in space. A circle is a plane section of a sphere. No PI needed. -------------- If you unfold a circle, you get a length (called perimeter). If you put the radius of the circle orthogonal to this line, you get a triangle which area is equal to that of the circle. No Pi needed.

That's all well. The question is that on a global scale, governments are asked to reduce their impact. More an more privatizations, lower budgets, less employees, less army, etc. On the other hand you observe the appearance of private companies bigger than states. American ones, Chinese, Russians, Indians, Koreans and others. The fact is that private companies are NOT based on democracy. At this time, the rulers are not the politicians, They are bankers, CEO of huge corporations and anonymous owners of colossal fortunes. And the thing is getting worse. Greece is a good example. The Greek government observes the rules dictated by the Troika (International Monetary Fund, European Central Bank, European Commission), these are 2 banks and 1 politic. The European Commission is ruled by Germany & France (as far as the Eurozone is concerned) which are taking decisions in function of their own debts to bankers. I don't see much of democracy in this. The only political alternative is to follow the arguments of the left wing, which is a suicide IMHO.

Well, the surprising thing in Greece is that the "hard work" devaluated all of a sudden. For the same job you earn less. Not only, "they" say that all of the past years you didn't earned that much money for your job. It is like you have stolen. It was not "real money", it was "borrowed money". It could happen to you, I don't wish that, but beware. Imagine someone abroad tells you that your job as engineer is not worth 100,000 a year, but 10,000. And that same person tells you: "you pig you don't produce anything worth, what you are producing is much too expensive because people like you ask too much money. You are unable to export anything, you are all of you a nothing and all these years you lived in a fake. Now it's time to give the money back". That is not a pleasant surprise. What is the cause? "They" say its my fault. I and another 10 millions. I have to pay back. I and another 10 millions.

I don't understand. I dared to stole your sketch. See below. When level C has been reached, the 2 parts are acting as communicating vessels. When drop O falls, then drop2 goes out. Right or wrong?

Wrong example. The "real" rich does not work. Working to be rich is a myth.

In a toilet there is a mechanism triggered by your hand. The siphon at the bottom has nothing to do with the flush. If I understand clearly the question is "what triggers the discharge ?" I guess some gas must be involved, I cannot figure triggering a discharge only with a constant geometry and a regular flow.

Do you have the same issue with the other websites? Maybe it is a question of priority set.

Isn't that what the U.S. are doing constantly?
