I don't know. I tried once, for exercise, to see what ancient people had to face in creating numerals from scratch. It's not that easy. Most of the times you create a pictogram and find out it has some other meaning somewhere as a letter or symbol. It is really difficult to create something new. I understand why ancient greeks used letters, it's the most obvious way to handle the question.

I said that before (bis repetita placent) about a year ago. To me this site is well moderated. The problem with the speculation forum is its location, down into the abyss, outside of science, next to the malodorous waste basket. Eventually, one could consider another way to handle speculations. Moderators could put a banner on the thread, reading "WARNING, SPECULATION" without even removing the thread from its original location. So a speculation about DNA structure would remain under Biology, and a speculation about how Einstein was wrong would remain under Relativity. The banner could even differ and go from "warning this thread is slightly speculative" from "DANGER, COMPLETE CRAP" under appreciation from the Mods.

Now I took some time to draw that. Step 1. a circle. Step 2. a smaller circle with a center on the circumference of the big circle. Step 3. a 2nd small circle, identical, with center at the intersection of the 2 circumferences. Step 4. segments joining the center of the big circle with the intersections on the circumference. Step 5. erasing the circle, keeping the arc. The angle is trisected, but there is no way to make the construction backwards. Isn't that remarkable?

What is a 3-sphnere?

I don't think that god (or gods) was (were) invented to explain mysteries. The purpose of god(s) is to legitimate the dominating power of some people on others. The "explanation of mysteries" part is the necessary gap IMHO, which as science progresses is continuously displaced in order to keep the distance between the presumed god and humans. Not to mention that beliefs like to create mysteries, like miracles for example.

You are too modest.

Why nope? I suspect a language issue. I maintain: on a sphere between 2 random points there is only one geodesic which is the smallest path, meaning that any other geodesic has a longer path. When the longest path is equal to the smallest, then the 2 points are at the antipodes, and only in this case there are multiple path of the same length. That was in response to your statement that I don't think such a configuration can be found easily in outer space: the Universe has no poles and random points in space cannot be found at the antipodes of the universe.

Does quantum theory really undermine determinism?
michel123456 replied to John Salerno's topic in Quantum Theory
Bolded mine. What is the word "measurable" doing in this sentence? If I had to follow Dr Rocket, it could be: (paraphrasing Dr's statement) It is in fact a statement that there is no such thing as a definite value of either position or momentum associated with a quantum particle. -
Geodesics between the poles is a special case. Only when the 2 points are exactly opposite (antipodes) there are multiple geodesics. Between 2 random points on Earth's surface, there is only one geodesic which is the smallest path.

Maybe using a car radiator. -

Heat transfer to water through copper pipe
michel123456 replied to CivilWausau's topic in Engineering
Here I need a true physicist, and an engineer together maybe: I don't know what exactly happens inside a gas chamber. A flame is plasma, but maybe it is not the flame that heats the water, I need outside help... Air is an insulator means that heat does not transfer well from air to anything else. Air is what is used in a double glazing for insulation. I suppose for heat transfer it is one of the worst material. You can see that also with climate control: if you use it for heating, the system propulses hot air in the room but walls and objects remain cold. If you stop heating the room gets cold in a few seconds. -
Why this Forum doesn't publish a list of known "not real scientists" ?

All visualizations are off. The world is not 3D, the world is 4D. There is space, there is time. Spacetime bends. Not space only, not time only. The rubber sheet analogy is very very bad (IMHO). It is a mix of 3D (the round planet) and 2D (the rubber sheet) in a tentative to explain the effect caused by a 3D object translating in a 4D spacetime. The analogy is foul: although you should have for the framework a dimension over the object, the analogy gives a dimension less than the object. It would be better to imagine a coin (a 2D disk) into a 3D framework, where the surface that contains the coin represents space, and the perpendicular represents time. The disk is then the representation of a sphere at a certain instant in time. ----------------- Take a coin from your pocket, put it on your desk, that's it.

Heat transfer to water through copper pipe
michel123456 replied to CivilWausau's topic in Engineering
You mean a flame, as you said earlier, "a gas flame". The system of the OP is about hot air. Air is not a good heat conductor, air is an insulator. It is like trying to heat a casserole with a hair dryer. -
Heat transfer to water through copper pipe

It looks like reverse thinking. Usual systems heat water then hot water circulating in some kind of radiator heats the air. You are about doing the contrary: using hot air to heat water. Since you plan to do that anyway i would be interested in your results. -
I have been told that some time ago people blinded captive birds in order to make them sing. -------------------- edit: true, found it here The "sport" is Vinkensport.

I don't recognize any animal. It looks like contour lines as appearing when excavating the slope of a mountain, but of course I may be wrong. What are the coordinates in Google earth?
