Looks like a quarry.

This thread is to be read twice, definitely! He is joking. His question is WHAT can I do to turn seemingly intelligent people into stupid ones. He found the answer. I think he is great.
-
Another example about the "who is talking" importance. He is not so bad. It is an achievement to make humor on this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RclSswpw4g&feature=related I think the problem is that we are not able to catch him. IMHO he should lower his level.

A "no motion" bus I hope.

Is it imagination, or grandfather's name (or grandmother's, some close relative's name anyway)?

You should expand on this.

I am with md65536 a 100%. My intervention about interference was genuine, I don't try to show how smart I am: I truly don't understand.

No interference ?

Happy birthday. Save us.

A mathematical unitless concept of proportion. Anything can count as unit, it is just a matter of convention. The center can be anywhere, position doesn't matter. And a compass, basically, has no mensuration. To draw 2 same circles the only thing you have to do is keep the compass open the same way. I don't understand what you mean. ------------------- edit: I don't want to push this too far. Maybe you're right, maybe numbers came first.

You can do geometry without measuring. drawing a circle. drawing a second same circle with center anywhere on the perimeter of the first circle: creating a vesica piscis. drawing a line joining the 2 centers. drawing a line joining the intersections of the 2 perimeters: that is dividing the radius in 2. continuing the radius to the other side of the circle: creating a diameter. from one intersection point of the diameter with the circle, drawing a random line that intersects the circle anywhere. From the new intersection point, draw a line that joins to the other intersection of the diameter with the circle. Creating a right rectangle. For example.

I may be wrong, but I thought it was possible to have geometry without numbers.

It is the beginning of Alzeihmer with 3 main symptoms: _loss of memory. _I don't remember the 2 others.

Stoney units, very interesting. From what I see: from geometry you can derive ratios. Like Pi ([math]\pi[/math]). Radians, as proposed by Md, are ratios. I suppose from geometry one can also derives integer numbers, like 1 (one rotation?). Then, applying ratios, one can derive (i suppose) bit by bit all that we actually know about numbers. In such a way that one can establish an entire mathematical theory. The point is, is it possible from all that, at some point, to get some physical unit, a dimension ? I was wondering: we know from the physical world, from experience, observation, measurement, that there is a limit to the ratio distance/time, which is the Speed Of light So, in a geometry that includes time together with space, we know that there is an upper value to some ratio. We know what we must end up with. That is manageable. We can find from pure geometry a maximum ratio, that is a ratio that goes up till a value, then goes down and up again but never transgress a maximum. Like an angle for example, be in radians or any other system. More: we know also that SOL is not only an upper limit to a ratio, it is also a constant. Again, we know what we must end up with. That is manageable too. We can find from pure geometry a constant ratio. [math]\pi[/math] is the first one that comes to mind, there are others. Now, we need to get from geometry a ratio that is both a maximum and a constant. That is not trivial, [math]\pi[/math]for example is not a maximum value. -------------------------------- And after doing that, the next step will be to consider SOL as a pure dimensionless ratio.

No, I was stupid. I thought you intended to put the whole mechanism inside the jar...(as in the pictures in the links) Now I understand your proposal. It should work. And if he puts the jar upside down he may get a clearer picture of what will happen or use any other kind of recipient with opaque cover.

If it is required to be airtight, that's a problem: how would you manage to produce the movement? You'd need a more complex mechanism.

This is a question: Is it possible, starting from a geometric description that uses only proportionality, to construct a system that ends up with some kind of unit, like kilogram, meter, second or ampere? Intuitively, I would say no.

What comes into mind is to use a book binding press. If your grandfather did not let one of such in your heritage, you may find it in antique shops. maybe there are modern models in hobby shops, I don't know. --------------------- Maybe using a car jack ? and some patent of your own. ---------------------- If you go to a good tool store, you may find a drill stand like the one on this link (no add intended)- not too expensive.

Welcome to the club. There are so many jokes about the domination of women over men that there must be some truth in it. Go to the jokes section. Difficult. I am not in your case, as much as I know, but I have a very close experience in my family. What is the response of your dominating wife to this situation? Does she help you? or does she hit the nail?
-
Yes, at night of course.

I think the clear answer to the OP is "no one knows". However, one can imagine how weird world would that be a universe with Speed Of Light 1m/s for example, or even less. IOW there must be some relation between our dimension (and all dimensions from electrons to galaxies) and the value of SOL. Some expect this relation to be geometrical, but no one really knows yet.
