  1. I think the kid is handing him the flower, according to the original picture caption. Could be the other way around though, can't tell from the picture.
  2. + 1
  3. ...and now, a message from your state-run television.. "The infidel forces of the great satan are lying to you! What you are seeing is fake, like their moon landing! Our mighty republican guard is slaughtering the US troops this very moment! Saddam himself is fighting a whole division of these beasts!! Hail Saddam! They are killing themselves to avoid our wrath!! I will show you later, after we get the place cleaned up. (does this guy crack anyone else up?) ======
  4. Right, but since you're active your heart-rate is raised higher more often [when you're running, etc] than those who are inactive. my bad, i wasn't very clear on that.
  5. Any specific kind of physics??
  6. It works all the time. Sometimes it works harder, sometimes it works less. It all depends on the person and their lifestyle. If you're an active person, your average heart rate is likely to be higher.
  7. I was reading up a bit about string theory, and the author (Brian Greene) mentioned that the strings are "2-dimensional". How can something be 2-dimensional without being infinitely thin? Given the technology was available, wouldn't it have some width?
  8. Thats because its not painful enough, duh
  9. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Originally posted by Sayonara³ No I didn't. I was talking about you, not the war. [2]So they can be shot in the back while doing so? You're still wrong. [3]No I didn't. I was talking about you, not the war. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) He's saying there is no such thing as a "voluntary human shield" in Iraq. If they say no and leave, they will be shot (hence, shot in the back). 3) The US is bound to UN laws as well, and that we cannot argue that we are going to war because Iraq broke UN laws [which it *technically isn't bound by (excluding its cease-fire)], because we are breaking UN law ourselves. Thats a good point, so I don't think we should be going around saying we're toppling saddam because he can't obey the "law".
  10. bahaha. faf, was he still claiming its coming this spring?
  11. Wasn't it a thought experiment to demonstrate the absurdity of qm on a macro scale?
  12. faf, I'm not sure where you got the idea that saddam was an evil dictator but he lets people volunteer to be human shield and leave the country at will.... ------------------- Anyhow, I read a great analysis of this whole situation: Iraq has weapons of mass destruction. Unless they don't. If they do, they were planted. If they don't, we told you so. But it's not about weapons of mass destruction, it's about liberating Iraqis. Unless it's not. If it's not about liberating Iraqis, it's about retribution for 9/11. Unless Iraq didn't have anything to do with 9/11. Which they did. And we know they did. Unless they didn't. And if it's not about retribution for 9/11, it's about oil. Unless it's not. Because we don't get much oil from Iraq. Unless we do. In which case the prices should be going up, since a bunch of Iraq's oil has been burning up or not being pumped out of the ground for the last few weeks. But gas prices are going down. So maybe it's not about oil. Then it's about getting Haliburton a big reconstruction contract. Unless it's not. Because Haliburton makes a pretty good living anyway, even without wars tearing up Iraq. Unless they don't. In which case it's just about Dick Cheney getting a few million in under-the-table kickbacks from Haliburton because he launches a $70 billion war at taxpayers' expense. Unless it isn't because Cheney's a multimillionaire anyway and wouldn't live long enough to spend anything Haliburton would give him. Unless he would. Then it's about Yankee imperialism. Unless it's not. Because if there's one piece of land you want, it's one right smack in the middle of the most God-forsaken land you ever saw, where you'd run the risk of getting blown up every day. Unless you wouldn't. So it must be about sending a message to North Korea. Unless it isn't. The only thing I know for sure is this: regardless of how you feel about it, the war's not stopping anytime soon. The reasons behind it are immaterial now, and only what happens in the few years after Sadaam is out of there will give us an idea of what really was behind this. Unless it doesn't

^sucks :D Congrats faf, looks like your school is just all-around better.
  17. "In a discovery that is likely to impact fields as diverse as atomic physics, chemistry and nanotechnology, researchers have identified a new physical phenomenon, electrostatic rotation, that, in the absence of friction, leads to spin. Because the electric force is one of the fundamental forces of nature, this leap forward in understanding may help reveal how the smallest building blocks in nature react to form solids, liquids and gases that constitute the material world around us." University of California Press Release
  18. Today a friend (who is far removed from anything science) asked me why the government wastes billions of dollars a year on "useless" science. This is a good question. Why do huge amounts of funds go towards things like studying the social behavior of roaches in australia, when it should be going towards things like cancer and AIDS? I struggled with the question a bit, because I think all true science is in some way valuable, even if it merely adds to our knowledge. I found this notion extremely hard to explain, especially in light of funds going towards projects like these instead of more important issues. As a scientist, what is the answer to this question?
  19. are you talking about sodium tripolyphosphate??

  21. An intact specimen of Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni was caught recently in the waters around Antarctica. It is only the seventh specimen of this species ever found, and only the second found outside of a sperm whale. It was first identified in 1925, but virtually nothing is known about it. The mantle of the half-grown squid is 2.5 meters, by comparison the mantle of the giant squid Architeuthis only grows to about 2.25 meters. They estimate a full grown specimen has a mantle around 4 meters long. Full BBC article here
  22. Anyone have any particularly effective strategies for solving calculus word problems? Neither my book or my teacher provided any. I get confused just reading the problem. Are there strategies??
