  1. I start tomorrow. I just finished my summer quarter last week :/
  2. I'm still not sure about what you're asking. The stomach has sphincters at both openings--cardiac sphincter (also called lower esophageal sphincter), and the pyloric sphincter which serve as "one way valves". These can allow some pressure to build up (which is why you burp).
  3. "The server bill isn't due till the first!" - blike
  4. Severian kindly took the time to explain the flaws in the ideas you presented. Either address what he said and substantiate your claim or this thread will be closed.
  5. You definitely should see your doctor.
  6. I really do apologize for the thread-interruption, but that gets a golf clap from me.
  7. I find that hard to believe...
  8. Dak, sorry, I accidentally deleted your post while it was in the que. I read it though
  9. Some questions for all the members here: If you could make a change to SFN, what would it be? What would you change about the front page? What would you remove from SFN? What have you seen on other forums that you think we should have?
  10. Cocaine, to be specific.
  11. A friend of mine brought up the objection to global warming that we simply have more accurate thermometers now. That got me thinking, how can we eliminate that possibility? How do we know the genereal temperature trends prior to the invention of thermometers?
  12. The same thing that makes coke different form pepsi
  13. http://www.originsdebate.com is an SFN-affiliated site devoted to the creation / evolution controversy. I'd encourage anyone who is interested to sign up and help us get the site started!
  14. No, we had a deal with him where he could advertise his ads on our site, but there was no advertising of his site on ours or our site on his. Limited edition autographed copies.
  15. No advertising deal. Fafalone and I started the site and forced some of our non-science oriented friends in a certain AOL chatroom to join. One guy in the room decided it would be fun to spam our site all over the internet with a stupid tag line such as "Created by real harvard (or yale, can't remember which school he used) scientists", and "real naked women" kind of thing in AOL chats kind of thing. You can still find some of the former taglines around. After we got a few baseline members from I don't know where (none of the original members really posted anything regarding science), things just picked up on their own.. We've never advertised on another website, so everything has been word of mouth/google. I suppose it was a combination of luck and timing.
  16. Could be thrombocytopenia, but also could be a lot of other things. If you're worried about it see your doctor.
  17. I finally figured it out. If your time settings weren't in sync with the server it tries to redirect you to your profile to fix the problem. However, the URL for the redirect was wrong, hence the error page. I took out the redirect altogether.
  18. It's an auto-immune disease. Her body has formed antibodies against a gluten-transaminase. Thus, when the protein is high concentration (as it is after she eats gluten), she'll have symptoms. They can do a serological test for this, but a negative test does not mean she does not have the disease. If she stops eating glutin and the symptoms subside, then that's probably the disease. This is cheaper and easier than a duodenal biopsy (which is diagnostic). It has a genetic component--but environment also plays a role in activating" the disease. Trauma and stress are known to contribute to the onset of the disease. It's likely she hadn't encountered the conditions that triggered it. Yes, see above. *I am only a first year medical student. Don't take my comments as gospel. I saw a patient two weeks ago in a clinic who had the disease, and I did some research and talked with my attending physician about it.
  19. Nevermore, you're supposed to add a topic for the next poster...
  20. I have a few viruses, apparently. Taking care of them fixed the problem
  21. I've got a problem here. When I first boot my computer, my internet runs fine. However, after browsing a bit (I usually notice it after I've tried to open 3 or 4 webpages simultaneously), it slows WAAYYY down and hangs on "Connecting to page.com". Basically it just sits there trying to connect. AFter about 30 seconds, it finally connects and proceeds to load the page extremely slow. I think it's a problem with resolving IPs or connecting to them or something. It even occurs in IRC, so it's not just a browser problems. Any suggestions?
  22. Does this rag smell like chloroform to you? /couldn't resist
  23. No one can tell you how this happened. I want to see pictures, I don't believe you.
