  1. Thanks to our resident php and math genius dave, LaTex is up again. Now you can click the latex image to see the code that generated it.
  2. I think you'll enjoy it, and I really think you'll excel in it. The best advice I can give you is to not let yourself fall behind in the class, especially in a summer class. Make a study schedule and stick to it. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Looks like they have a weekly review session, which is what my university does. Those are really helpful if you go to them. Also, do as many problems as you can get your hands on. I went to the book store and did practice problems in other organic textbooks. There's a book out that claims it has every time of organic problem you'll ever see in an undergraduate course. Definitely look into that. I didn't buy it, but I did some problems out of it at the bookstore. Good luck!
  3. Maybe you should try making a scale model to test things. You don't want to ruin your waterbed with a mistake.
  4. Indeed. I always think of myself as pretty static as well. It's sort of like growing up. You don't notice all the changes that take place because they happen gradually. Likewise, there wasn't a single day where I said, "to heck with that idea, now I think this." Only now, looking back on things, do I realize how much they've changed over the course of 3 years. I think a large factor in my change was my college education. Although I learned a great deal about specific subjects, I learned how to learn. I think that's one of the most important things college can impart you. It kind of goes back to what Phi was saying earlier about the importance of a student learning, rather than expecting to be taught everything.
  5. I find it interesting how much my beliefs and world view have changed since I started this forum. Reading through some of my older posts is like reading a completely different person. I guess it's just easy to see the change because everything is documented. For most people, they don't realize how much they've changed. It was only after reading some old school posts that I realized how different I am. Anyone else have similar experiences here or elsewhere?
  6. HE DID. "GRAVITY TRAVELS AT C"; C is the speed of light in a vacuum. Thread closed. The answer is in here, if you can't find it, we can't help you.
  7. True. But since it counts as a medical school prerequisite, he probably won't leave much out.
  8. Congrats on getting a seat in those classes at Harvard. Will it give you a leg up in admission to the university when you apply? Organic Chemistry is the class that separates the men from the boys, in my experience. Even as a two semester course it was very intensive. It's the class that premeds dread taking, because it can make or break you. It might be different for you. You come from a strong chemistry background, and so it might be easier for you to understand. Chemistry has never been my strongpoint, and although I did well in both classes, it was a lot of work. Lots of studying through the weekend, late night studying, and outside resources. The labs were not as hard, but they required a lot of outside class time to prepare and to write lab reports. I can't imagine both organic 1 and organic 2 compacted into one summer. It will definitely require a lot of your time. It's very different from General Chemistry. You definitely don't want to set yourself up for failure. However, you understand general chemistry better now than I did when I entered organic chemistry, and thus I think you have the capacity to succeed. The question is whether you have the drive and the will, at this point. It's not a bad thing if you don't; you're still a high school student. Nonetheless, you will have to work hard.

    Schiavo case

Looks like Mike Schiavo will allow an autopsy. http://reuters.myway.com/article/20050329/2005-03-29T003404Z_01_N28677014_RTRIDST_0_NEWS-RIGHTS-SCHIAVO-DC.html Also, Fox News is carrying an interesting article: Docs: Schiavo Video Misleading
  11. Information is sketchy right now, but it is reported that there was an 8.5 mag earthquake in the indian ocean and an 8.3 magnitude in sumatra.
  12. I noticed that yesterday Dak, but it only seemed to be in this thread.
  13. I can't remember what channel it was (believe it was on discovery), but I watched an excellent video on the Iraq war. It didn't serve to make a political statement, only to show what it was like day to day through the eyes of a soldier. It was very effective in conveying the emotions people feel as they go through these things. I don't know that I like the fact that they're making a profit by filming the tragedy of men, but I found the show interesting and informative. That's what I pay them for, right?
  14. No, just that it sounded remarkably similar. Undoubtedly the same issues will arise.
  15. I'm kind of in the middle on this. I would like to see the hubble serviced, but I also like the idea of manned space exploration. It's unfortunate that congress has forced NASA to make this decision by cutting funding.
  16. Should endangered species be cloned?
  17. http://www.godandscience.org/youngearth/dinoblood.html Just an interesting link I found that discusses a discovery in 1997 that sounds remarkably similar to the story being reported.

    Schiavo case

I don't think it depends on her being in PVS. Any sort of extended life-support with no hope of rehabilitation. I can't recall exactly what was said, but I don't know that it was exclusively limited to PVS. I don't only because Michael asked that they get involved. Listen, I shouldn't have called you dense, I apologize for that.

    Schiavo case

Yes, but not over Terri's death. I'm gloating over the fact that the judicial branch is keeping the state and the federal government the heck out of our personal lives. It's very very satisfying to hear senators on the radio and on TV enraged over the fact that a judge has put them in their place. This is legislative madness. This is not why we elect governors and senators. I already admitted to being wrong. Why can you not fully comprehend this point? It's really not that difficult. IT'S NOT IMPORTANT WHAT IS BEST FOR TERRI. IT'S IMPORTANT THAT SHE IS ABLE TO MAKE HER OWN DECISIONS AND MAINTAIN HER AUTONOMY WITHOUT THE GOVERNMENT DICTATING WHAT IS BEST FOR HER. WHO ARE YOU, OR I, OR JEB BUSH, OR GEORGE BUSH, OR CONGRESS, OR ANYONE TO DECIDE WHAT IS BEST FOR TERRI. SHE EXPRESSED HER WISHES AND NOW THEY ARE BEING HONORED. It doesn't matter that the doctors think something else is better for her. It doesn't matter that the county, city, state, or national governments feel that something is better for her. What's best for her is what she decided. That's all there is to it. Autonomy needs to be respected, not trampled over by legislators making political maneuvers. The courts ruled that she wouldn't have wanted to live in this situation based on the testimony of her husband and two others. That's all that is important. You're just being dense, and everyone is this thread is well aware of it. Stop it.
  20. Perhaps, That's because they don't understand "observation -> hypothesis -> model". Their version looks something like "model -> find observations that fit". That's why they get themselves all worked up when we find observations that don't fit our model. Just because we don't have a current model for how that could happen doesn't mean that it doesn't happen, or that the dinosaur bone is less than 10,000 years old. It is very interesting news though. If they do find DNA, with some overlap analysis they might be able to reconstruct some of the genome. This would be a huge breakthrough which would allow many more things (such as phylogenic relationships) to be clarified. Of course, in the back of all our minds is the faint hope that it could be cloned. Highly unlikely, but scientists can dream too.
  21. Reuters is reporting that paleontologists have observed what they believe to be soft-tissue, including blood vessels, inside of a T-Rex thigh bone. The scientists were forced to break the bone in half because of transportation limitations. It is unknown whether it will be possible to isolate DNA fragments from the tissue.

    Schiavo case

In case anyone didn't see the news, the US Supreme Court turned down Schiavo's parents again. Florida Gov. Jeb Bush is trying to take state custody of her again, which will probably be shot down before the ink dries on his signature. http://apnews.myway.com/article/20050324/D891E8HO3.html

  25. Tried that :/ I'm just going to return it and try a different one.
