Did you make that? If so where'd you get the image of those people? I love it!

lol awesome, now to find illustrations. What kind of shirts do you guys like? Just plain white with text? Some sort of color/graphic? What style of graphic?
-
yea, the eye is going to go right over me in a couple of hours. Still have power though!

The idea of selling some science-related shirts has been floating around here off and on for a long time now. I'd like to do this, but I don't have the creativity that some of you have. What do you think would make good shirts? Personally, I like shirts that are clearly geeky, but in a retro-illustration style. Here's what I mean by "retro-illustration sytle." I also like a bit of wit or sarcasm, or play on words, or anything really. I saw a shirt yesterday that said, "What's so hard about rocket science?". It had some cheesy 70s illustration that was quite humorous. Anyhow, I know many of you are very creative . I don't know how many of you are good with images, but that would help too. So, if anyone has ideas, post them here puhlease.

My toilet once flushed itself when I walked by, honestly. I was horrified, but I was also only 12.

You should play Yahoo Chess. It's free, and real time.

Yea I was going to mention him, but I didn't think anyone outside of the U.S. would have seen it. That was insane.

What the heck! Cops can't shoot people for running here. They just charge you with the felony 'evading arrest' after the catch you. They may try and shoot your tires out as a last resort, but on the highway they can count on spike strips, and in a city they can count on heavy traffic to slow you up. And YT, yea. I don't know why people run because when they get a helicopter over heard, you're not getting away, even at night.

Back to Basics: Cosmology - A Science?
blike replied to CoolATIGuy's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
Yes it does. You can make inferences (hypothesis) about the origin of things based on the characteristics it presents. These hypothesis can be tested in various ways. For example (this is purely hypothetical, because I'm too tired to dig up a real example), an assumption is made based on some gathered evidence that the universe expanded rapidly in the first few seconds after the big bang. Based on our knowledge of physics and chemistry, we can infer that the presence of element {X} in the universe should be 3 times greater than element {Y} if the universe did in fact expand rapidly. Telescopes then meticulously record elements throughout the visible universe and verify that element {X} occurs 3 times more often than element {Y}. Anytime we 'observe' an experiment or process, we are actually observing the results of a process which happened in the past. Granted, it may have been a few nanoseconds ago, but it is still the results of a past physical process. Whether it is a million years or a millsecond, the concept is the same. -

Yea, its almost exactly 1gb/day average. So far this month: 31,623 unique visitors with some 583,479 pages served. Several orders of magnitude better performance than our last server. -
lol. Maddox isn't really an extremist, he's an equal opportunity offender See his main page: http://maddox.xmission.com/

budullewraagh, sorry for getting a bit...sarcastic/rude. I've had a bad day (flu + exam tomorrow + exam today + other crap) and I've been sort of taking it out on everyone. My apologies, I was wrong :\

The original quote was: "I forgot to mention that Israel is doing a decent job against Palestinian militants, so could Israels strategies be applied to coalition forces?" Did you catch it that time?
-
I've seen it before too. I thought ambulances did it occasionally as well. I've seen them flip on their lights, go through a red light, and turn them off. When I road as an EMT though I saw that they got calls and then got them cancelled minutes later all the time. We did it a few times. I just point that out to suggest that there is at least a possibility for an explanation. However, I see cops speed like madmen all the time, and it irritates me to death. I'm sure they abuse the law often.

lol. You should probably mention something along the lines "Al Franken, probably the most left wing venomous author in the USA today.", just to be fair. Because it needed to be said again. Looks like the U.S. and the U.K. took Anne's advice on #1 and #2, and as to #3; they need some sort of hobby other than slaughtering infidels. (can't remember who said that) The difference between Fox News commentators like Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity and liberal media anchors like Dan Rather is that Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity will glady tell you where they stand and why. That's their job. They're commentators. They comment on things, you know? They are not pretending to be something they're not. Apply the same standards to any news station and see what happens. Heck, we've got CBS openly using forged documents and ignoring the advice of two seperate experts so they could air the piece anyways. Then we've got the old Katie Couric challenge in which you can mute the TV and tell whether it's a liberal or conservative she's interviewing by the expressions on her face. The american media is overwhemingly and obviously liberal, and yet no one is whining and moaning about that. Not a rant against you or anything, just a general observation.

Can you provide support for that? I'm doing a quick search and I can't seem to find anything. Ahh here we go again. At least you've stopped the "hundreds of thousands slaughtered" bit you were running around screaming a few weeks ago. Abu Gharab was a small group of people of which the rest of the country condemned, not a state-supported action. Just because a few horrible people abused some prisoners at Abu Gharab does not mean the United States government or people are evil. While thousands of innocent people have undoubtedly been killed, I think there is a clear distinction between purposefully killing innocent people and accidentally killing innocent people, or heaven help the allies. As sayo mentioned before, it all comes down to justification, which leads us to #3, and that, my friend, is up for debate. I could be wrong here but wasn't the 1991 cease-fire contingent upon Iraq's compliance with all the resolutions?
-
Agreed. Very true, good point. I wish the government would just scale back on the whole and stop spending more than it has. I'm sure there are billions of dollars being thrown away, aside from the war. I meant an adult having sex with a minor, not sex between minors. I still think it's a good thing. As to your first point, I'll have to get back to you. Girlfriend is waiting for me to watch a movie with her.

Are you referring to WMD specifically or the reasons for war? If you're talking about WMD exclusively, it's already been determined several times that he didn't lie. If you're talking about reasons, the details are spelled out in his address to the U.N. back in 2002. But they also gave cuts to over 75% of the population. The average tax cut was $1,217. The tax cuts increase as the amount spent on taxes increases. Even the median, $470, is four hundred and seventy dollars that I didn't have before. Interpret how you want, but you can't deny that the U.N. is mostly talk and no action, especially with Iraq. The cease fire was contingent upon Saddam complying with resolutions, and he clearly did not, for over 8 years. The act doesn't go in effect till 2006. That's really not relevant to the statement. Which would probably have little impact on the environment, but I haven't studied much on the issue. I don't see anything wrong with reducing foreign dependency, at all. I think terrorism started at least one of them. Your third point is at best speculation, but it was probably just a jab. Whats wrong with encouraging volunteering? I disagree with Bush's decision, but I don't agree with your reasoning either. Where do you stand on sex with a minor? What about a minor giving consent for anything? So if it doesn't affect everybody, it's moot? It was actually $20 million to rehabilitation engineering research centers. That's a $6.7 million increase over the regular level.

lol. Anytime anyone says "Yeeeee-ha" it's because they're mocking old western films. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say "Yeeeeee-ha" as a serious gesture. ya bloody brits. aye, crumpets, tea, and the queen!

My condolences about that whole situation. In general, they will definitely occur in hospitals with some frequency. In that respect they are "unavoidable". There are all sorts of factors which play into susceptibility to infections, but the most obvious is a weakened immune system. My mom (who is a nurse) said that some infections can be prevented by observing proper procedures, but some are just going to happen.
-
Although it was probably a natural reflex, I was under the impression that all nurses are required to have their hair tied back when on the clock. I know most medical floors don't require hair nets. They all either have it tied back or have short hair. Obviously dangling hair presents an issue, especially if she touches another patient, then touches her hair, then touches you. Whether or not that is the cause of the staph infection is another issue. Infections do happen in the hospital because of resistant strains, but as Glider said, good practices can reduce the number of infections significantly. However, it probably could never be conclusively proven that it wasn't just bad luck. Did your mom get a staph infection or did you just hear about them?

Where's the super mario bros. 3 love?
-
lol. I'd really like to know what non-american's say when they're impersonating americans. For example, when we imitate australians we say: "G'Day Mate!", and imitating british we usually mention "bloody", "queen", "crumpets", etc.

we also use bum to refer to homeless people. "Can you bum me a dollar?" "watch out for teh bums!"
