Introductory letters for college applications and UC questions

I'm applying to medical schools, but most of the secondary applications I have received have an essay: "What personal qualities do you feel you bring to _______?" and "Why should _______ accept you over other qualified applicants?" -

I'm going to write a few this week, I'll let you know how I approach it. And yes, being from florida myself, the gordon rule sucks. You really need to look online or call the admissions office and ask. State schools are required to meet an in-state quota, but private schools typically don't have such quotas. -
Phi, sorry. I assume (wrongly so) that you were from Europe and trying to tell us how we feel based on what you've seen on the news. However, seeing as you're from the states, you would have a better idea of what the social situation is. I still disagree, but sorry for lashing out a bit :0

Please. Don't act like you know what's in our minds. You only know what your media tells you. We're not rolled up into a collective ball of fear. Quite frankly, the only time it's mentioned is in political debates. Secret budgets? Evidence? Yea, for a whole year (76-77). What does that have to do with ANYTHING. They did, but the main threat at that time was nuclear war, not terrorism. They smuggled the money to the carribean where it resides in a secret bank located far, far underground. I don't know, you tell me. The budget is available in government libraries. It is.

Yes Yes No! I don't have a problem with abortion as long as it is before the heart starts beating. After that point, in my opinion, abortion is unethical.

I haven't quite decided yet, but probably not anesthesiology The three fields that interest me are general surgery, internal medicine, and emergency medicine. The first two primarily because I enjoy sitting down and problem solving. I like a lot of patient interaction, so internal medicine and emergency medicine are attractive in that respect. I'll have to wait until 3rd and 4th year rotations before I can really get a handle on what specialty I fit ino best. Having never experienced any of them, I don't know. btw, what does "FIT" mean? is that in reference to dave's post or something?

Very good point. Is justice in and of itself a sort of revenge, or is revenge a sort of justice, or neither? The terms have very different connotations, but are they two words for the same concept? Revenge, to me, seems to be something that is carried out for personal satisfaction or recompense and often goes above and beyond the initiating offense. Justice on the other hand, is something that is carried out for social reasons. For families of victims, justice may become a sort of personal revenge. But for society, it ensures that people are treated in accordance with their behavior. That's how I see it, but I havn't thoroughly explored the issue.

It's not a valid argument against capital punishment itself. This thread addresses two issues: What we think of the death penalty itself, and our ideas about how it is implemented. I only addressed why I think the death penalty, in theory, is accepable and the only way to serve justice in certain situations. I agree. The purpose of posting that comment was an attempt to discern whether you disagree with the way the death penalty is administered (i.e. it's flawed because innocent people can be executed), or whether executing someone for murder is inherently wrong. Those are two separate issues, but it wasn't clear from your initial post. If you believe the death penalty is inherently wrong, arguing that innocent people might get executed is side-stepping into another issue. I would like to hear arguments as to why the practice of execution is wrong. There have been some (rather weak) comments regarding the issue, but I have yet to hear a solid argument.

Haha, I forget where that thread is. I'm still good on my word about the mug. haha, post all the questions you want. July 2002 is when the site started. Sayonara has been here as long as I can remembe, so has JaKiri (though thats a recent incarnation of his username).

Mistrials and false convictions aren't an argument against the death penalty, they are arguments against the implementation of it in a given system. What do you say if someone is proven guilty, or someone caught in the act, or for someone who has confessed?

Before I get started in this thread [because I'm going to disagree with the majority of you], justice is defined as "the maintenance or administration of what is just especially by the impartial adjustment of conflicting claims or the assignment of merited rewards or punishments." First and formost, the purpose of any justice system is to execute justice; not to rehabilitate, not to isolate. Secondary purposes, such as isolating criminals from the general population and rehabilitating criminals do not constitute the foundation of any justice system. In short, a justice system exists to render each man what he is due. As such, the primary purpose of any punishment is to execute justice. They do not exist merely to serve as deterrents. (I have a feeling that some of you will argue this point. However, do not argue this point and then turn around and tell me the death penalty does not work as a deterrent.) This is evidenced by the fact that the punishment for any crime generally increases in severity with the harm it causes. Surely we would all cry foul if our car was stolen and the judge only sentenced the criminal to an overnight stay in prison. But why? Because the criminal has not been punished in accordance with the severity of personal harm he has caused us.

I'm about 5 pages into it so far. I'll let you know once I get into the meat of the book. I'm also reading: "Stiff" and "Complications: A surgeon's notes on an imperfect science."

The first 15 members joined because they were in a chatroom with faf and I and we forced them to Then, this guy called jinx decided to spam the site everywhere (to piss us off, we hated him). He started out by entering chatrooms "Free XXX Pictures Click Here". So if you're one of the first members, you probably clicked that link Then he changed his line to: July 08, 2002 jon <fafalonex@aol.com> http://www.scienceforums.net/ http://www.scienceforums.net/ - created by lab scientists studying at yale - discuss various topics related to science and posted all over guestbooks etc.

Yea. It is for the most part, except fox news, which is conservatively slanted. Thats why I like the BBC.

Uh, Jennings usually has a liberal slant.

Cats are mischievous. That's why I like dogs. They're honest, upfront, and will poop on your floor right in front of you.
