What you're talking about is the force due to acceleration. That is not the same thing as mass. Let's say an astronaut experiences 4Gs on his ride in the space shuttle. That doesn't mean his mass has increased four times. It means the acceleration has increased to four times the earth's acceleration (9.8m/s^2). F=ma. As you can see, the force his body places on his seat will increase, but his invariant mass has not increased, only the acceleration. That is different from relativisitic mass, which increases with velocity, not acceleration. Read the link I sent you regarding conservation of momentum.
-
No, you're confusing acceleration with velocity.
-
Nooo, thats only acceleration. What happens when you stop accelerating? Let's say you are travelling .99 the speed of light, but there is no acceleration. If you were in the middle of black, gravityless space (hypothetically), you wouldn't even know you were moving.
-
From what I understand, its based on conservation of momentum. See this page: http://galileoandeinstein.physics.virginia.edu/lectures/mass_increase.html

Haha, you might want to check out brian green's book "The Elegant Universe". He does a fair job of explaining all the implications and effects of relativity to us laymen.

I'm finding lots of suncreen/sunblock that use it: http://www.sungrubbies.com/SunblockSunscreen.htm http://www.drugstore.com/qxp37882_333181_sespider/peter_thomas_roth/titanium_dioxide_sunblock_spf_30.htm Looks like its used more in sunblock than sunscreen.

Why do brits always have to screw up our units :-D

Thai, the name of the compound is Titanium dioxide (TiO2). It's a known carcinogen. Dunford R, Salinaro A, Cai L, Serpone N, Horikoshi S, Hidaka H, Knowland J University of Oxford, Department of Biochemistry, UK. This is now a known carcinogen Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been noted (US Federal Register, 43FR38206, 25 August 1978) to be an unsafe physical sunscreen because it reflects and scatters UVB and UVA in sunlight. However, TiO2 absorbs about 70% of incident UV, and in aqueous environments this leads to the generation of hydroxyl radicals which can initiate oxidations. Using chemical methods, we show that all sunscreen TiO2 samples tested catalyze the photo-oxidation of a representative organic substrate (phenol). We also show that sunlight-illuminated TiO2 catalyses DNA damage both in vitro and in human cells. These results may be relevant to the overall effects of sunscreens. Yes, I have the chemical in my organic notebook. I'll dig it out for you around 9 tonight.
-
Haha no crap! My organic professor just said that like a week ago. You woudln't happen to be in Dr. Wofle's organic 2 lecutre at USF would you (University of South Florida)?

I agree, legalizing cloning would subject it to federal mandates which would at least attempt to keep it fairly regulated. I say great.

http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?click_id=79&art_id=qw1076573887833M323&set_id=1 Jerusalem - Israeli police have come up with plans to place bags of pig lard on buses in a bid to deter Palestinian militants from carrying out suicide attacks, the Maariv daily reported on Thursday. Rabbinical authorities have given the idea its approval on the grounds that it could be a life-saving measure even though pigs are also considered impure by Jews. Authorities believe that the move could discourage Palestinians from carrying out attacks as pieces of their exploded body could come into contact with the pig fat, prejudicing their chances of entering into paradise. Genius I say. Although Hamas will probably just declare that you get an extra virgin for going through all the trouble :\

Is it me or is the server running a little slower than it used to? I'm getting some errors too once in awhile...Anyone else?

I think sayonara wrapped this one up with his definition

we're quite nice, really unless you spam, then we turn into spam-devouring monsters.

Agaubr, I'm a bit confused. I was under the impression that flourine anions are less stable than bromine, chlorine, or iodine anions simply because the small nucleus does not distribute the charge as well. Thats why its a horrid leaving group (in organic chemistry) in aprotic solvents. However, in a protic solvent, hydrogen bonds can quickly stabilize the small ion, making it a great leaving group.

Alright, well you have two forces, both acting on the X and Y axis. F1 = 80N, :theta:1 = 80' F2 = 120N; :theta:2 = 75' Now what you want to do is find the sum of all forces for each coordinate (x and y) :sum:Fx = 80cos(80) + 120cos(75) That will give you the x-vector of both forces. Do the same for the Y-vector.. :sum:Fy = 80sin(80) + 120sin(75) (if you don't know why to use sin and cos, let me know) Now you have the sum of forces on the X and Y axis. To add the vectors, you must find the hypotenuse of the vector diagram. The hypotenuse will be your final sum of all forces Using a^2 + b^2 = c^2: c = sqrt(Fx^2 + Fy^2) That will be your final answer.

I have the book, but I havn't got that far into it yet. I'll let you know as I read more into it. As far as I've read, he argues that they have no "goal". Their only "purpose" is to replicate.

We could avoid the time zone issue by doing the Q&A on the forum. After someone had agreed to do it, we could open a thread and pick the best questions. Then we could email him the questions, he could respond, and then post them. That way he can do it on his own time.
