Although a battle against "zombies", must be a very interesting issue, imho, it doesn`t have anything to do with biomedical ethics. I hate acting as a spammer in a forum where I`m a relatively new member, but in this case, as a person who is related to the practice of medicine (I`m a Veterinarian), I find it completely offensive, the mixing of Science Fiction with reality in an area of science where the objective is to find the cure of disease or illment, and most of all when you`re supposed to be refering to "ethics" on the practice of it. To me this whole topic should be sent to Speculations or as I said before, to a Science Fiction scenario.

nec209, my friend first let me tell you I`m a Veterinarian, so I`m not the correct proffesional that can really help you in your doubts, unless of course that outside the net, when you ussually talk to others, you "bark" to them (), just kidding a little bit, no offence inttended. However, my knowledge about certain aspects related to health issues is "O.K", since human medicine, most of the time is very similar to animal medicine, and ussually, the presence of foam or bubbles in the urine is associated to proteins in it, but since I recognize myself as not being a human physician, I also searched through the web, to find some answers, and of course what I didn´t consider is that we, humans, regularly urinate inside a toilett with water in it, so in case of a forced urinating, the sudden mixing of the urine with the water or hitting the walls of the inside of the toilett, generates a lot of bubbles, which is absolutely normal. However, once again, if this is not the reason of the bubbles in the urine, I strongly suggest you to visit the correct physician (a human one, of course), for more valid answers, and don´t discard, at least making urine tests or blood tests, which are ussually not expensive, since when its due to a pathological reason, these ussually are very serious for your future health and any prevention related to health, is always welcomed, specially for those who care about you, starting of course by yourself. :-)

Usually the presence of a bubbly urine is associated with an elevated proteinuria (high presence of proteins in the urine), which is not normal within the urine, usually its associated with damage in the kidneys. It can also be associated to stress, hard physical work, or with a high fever in the case of not severe damage causes. But it can also imply other very hazardouss illments such as severe arterial hypertension, cardiac failure, lead poisoning, Diabetes and Lupus. You should visit your doctor at once to discard any of these serious illments and to start making the changes necessary to reverse the condition, or to start a more specific treatment. Maybe your doctor will suggest you a series of examinations, such as an Echography of the Kidneys (to see their size, in order to discard tumours or cysts), Blood samples, urine and blood pressure. I wish you the best, but I`ll also add myself to the rest of the members here, to visit your doctor and strongly suggest you to not leave it for too late.

If you sleep with all of your body weight on top of any part of it, specially limbs, it is normal that the circulation of blood is altered, so they can get "sleepy". Anyhow, if this condition persists, you shouldn`t discard a probable coronary disease, so I suggest you to visit your local physician and get yourself an examination, to discard it. At the least damage, only your pocket will suffer (), and if not, well, if you find out you do have a health problem, you can make the changes in your lifestyle in order to prevent a more serious condition.

I, personally love the use of emoticons, since as a tool, they can express universal emotions, and as you stated in your post, foodchain my friend. Their use allows us, to express ourselves even if our native language is not the same, and since through a computer we don´t really have the possibility to read our mutual body language (through sight) in a computerized conversation, these small drawings, can do the trick perfectly well. :-)

Why isn't anesthesia used during burn wound debridement?
Rickdog replied to Green Xenon's topic in Medical Science
Both replies are correct, the possible toxic effect of the anaesthesia you decide to use, can get exacerbated due to the instability of the pacient, so if its decided to use them, it must only be done by an expert in the use of anaesthetics. The changes in stability, related to hemodynamics and cardio-vascular condition are very present in a burned pacient, so you have to be very well prepared to know how to act in any case, usually a general phisician doesn`t have the expertice required for such cases in relation to the maintanance of the sedation. Also there are other facts in relation to the patience that can increase the risk to him by the use of anaesthesia. In burned patients it is very likely, for instance that his respiratory pathways can be ocluded or with rests of burned material or with rests of smoke and/or dry pieces of epithelial tissue in the respiratory tracts, that will affect the response of the patience, and of course kill him, in the long term. Also many anaesthetics have an inmune deppression effect, so the risk of infection in these patients is increased, which is already increased, before the application of anaesthesia, due to the extensive loss of skin in them. -
I was searching in the web, about it, since it seemed as a very interesting issue, and the only thing I found in the spanish wiki, was about the Charilaidae family (related to grasshoppers), that live in Venezuela, that if you dry its wings and you consume them they can give you a very powerful hallucinogen effect.

Do we get fat because we no longer get sick?
Rickdog replied to Mr Skeptic's topic in Medical Science
Very true, my friend. I forgot to say what you brilliantly said in your last sentence, thinking only in adult forms of tapeworms, refering myself to "all" parasites (). -
As a teen, back in the late 70`s and early 80`s, I was a great fan of all that "hard rock" style of music, but mostly for the music in itself. Being Spanish, my native language, it has always been very hard for me to understand most of the time the lyrics in music, specially when the singer screams or do those gutural sounds as in nowdays "death metal bands", but surely independently about this fact, the great "Judas Priest" was sure one of my top bands favourite of all time. Nice to find out that there are others who share the same feelings towards it, my friends. As another rock band from those day`s said : "For those about to rock, we salute you .........." (Aussie`s, "AC/DC")

Rickdog replied to Mr Skeptic's topic in Medical Science
The type of diarrhea associated with tapeworm infestations is not so obvious, so the loose of water is not so manifest. For the host, all the digestive syntoms are not so different than any digestive illment, such as indigestion, so it`s more probable that the host finds out that he has tapeworms infestation, once the tapeworm has reached full maturity, moment in which pieces of the tapeworm (proglotids) comes out through the faeces, which is one of the forms that this creatures have for reproducing itself, if he looks at them in the toilet. All parasitic diseases, depend on the survival of its hosts, cause the death of the host implies their own death (that`s the reason why mortality due to parasitic infestations is not so common as in other diseases), specially in adult forms of the parasites, such as tapeworms. Larval states of parasites are usually the opposite, since they depend on the death of its intermediate host in order that the host gets eaten my the definitive host, by which the parasite can complete its life cycle. :-) -
The medicine we have now that change the world than in the old days?
Rickdog replied to nec209's topic in Medical Science
Yes my friend, that "shot" hit the bulls eye (), I am a very idealistic person. And very true also, it is very dificult to satisfy my point of view about the issue, but since I don`t have the means to make a substantial change in the issue, at least with my statements I get a few to think about it, and make their own conclusions, which I think is the biggest reward we can all get in these kind of forums, by sharing our opinions. Besides, they are excellent means to learn issues that you thought you knew and that in reality you didn`t (for all that is). :-) -
The medicine we have now that change the world than in the old days?
Rickdog replied to nec209's topic in Medical Science
My friend, what is arguable about medicines advancements is that those advancements only benefits the ones who can pay it, even though we are dealing with mankinds health here. The deal is that if you are able to pay, than you`ll probably live better, but if you can`t, then simply put yourself in a hole and die without bothering the rest. Its about ethics and morality. Medicine industry (business), should have a more solidarity with those who can`t afford it, since what we are dealing with : Human Life. And about your last questions, I find them flammable, but imho, as I already had done, I reached for my pocket and sent to Haiti through my countries help a decent amount of "help" for those who are suffering in Haiti. What you decide to do about it, is your concern and I will not judge you for what you decide to do (it`s simply a matter of self conscience and belief) . -
The medicine we have now that change the world than in the old days?
Rickdog replied to nec209's topic in Medical Science
Yes my friend, that`s exactly the point I wanted to state here, it is business above human health. It`s not about selling a product at loss, but being more efficient in its production, minimizing the losses in its production and therefore reducing the costs of it, so the prices of the final products can be more affordable. But they keep the secret for themselves in most cases not allowing the competition, to be more efficient than them, being able to sell the new drug, for instance at lower prices, even though it can still be a good business doing so. About your second question, if I knew the answer, tell me, would it still be an industrial secret anymore ?. To find the best evidence in these cases, you just got to go to your local drug store and ask for a generic drug and ask for the prices of it. You`ll discover that the drugs made by more laboratories, are cheaper and that there is a great variation in price among them (open market policy), and that the most expensive ones, usually are made by less laboratories or only one of them, and their variation in price when its more than one, is lower. How is this possible ? - Make your own conclussions about it. It isn`t conspiracy, its business above common health, after all. -

Rickdog replied to nec209's topic in Medical Science
Insane _alien, my friend, I read your post thoroughly, and I understand that many articles of modern medicine are expensive, but you are not going to tell me, that every article is expensive, there is great amounts of discoveries made by the medicine industry that aren`t expensive to produce, but the jeloussy of the labs for instance, make them not wanting to share their own acquired scientific knowledge in order to keep prices of their products high, so it is greed (a monopolic business, of the needed knowledge and an exclussion to open market policy). Secondly, did you read my post ?. It is refered basicly to poverty (mayor proportion of the world suffers it) and the main issues that concerns it (hunger), so with actual medicines costs it`s prohibited for them. -
The medicine we have now that change the world than in the old days?
Rickdog replied to nec209's topic in Medical Science
Insane_alien, my friend, I don`t think Cancer will ever be a matter of great worry in Haiti, cause they can`t afford the cost that it involves. Haiti is just an example of a very poor country, whose main concern is starvation and if they could have the benefits of currency of only one day of the medical industry of the world, they could probably solve this problem for ever, but the medical industry is greedy and isn`t willing to share it with no one. Sad, very sad issue.:-( -
Do we get fat because we no longer get sick?
Rickdog replied to Mr Skeptic's topic in Medical Science
In the case of internal parasites as tapeworms, you don`t loose weight as a whole, since as the parasite is in you, each time you weigh your self, you are also weighing the parasite, and your loss is the parasites gain. Also since your needs increase due to the fact that you are not absorving all the nutrients necessary from your regular diet, you increase your intake of food in order to feed yourself and "your internal parasite", so the most probable is that you gain weight than loosing it, specially in the case of tapeworms, who in its simplicity once established in your bowel, feeds from your food intake and reproduces itself very fast. -
The medicine we have now that change the world than in the old days?
Rickdog replied to nec209's topic in Medical Science
I don`t want it to sound as a spam, but unfortunately the one disease that medicine`s advancements hasn´t been able to cure but make worst instead, is the uprising of costs for medical treatment. It is reaching levels by which, it doesn`t "bleed you", but it bleeds the pockets of those who need it urgently in order to continue having a decent level of life. In some cases, its beyond of the reach of the poor, so medicine in some cases is getting to the point by which of only those who can pay can afford it.:-( So excuse me, NEC209 my friend, with this post. Maybe it`s the answer to your question about what they are doing about Cancer, for instance in Haiti . -
Not really by chance, but by purpose, since if humans never intended to play as god by forcing those cattle animals that were originally herbivorous, to eat meat by mixing meat with other elements in the preparation of concentrates of food in order to make their breeding more efficient, by the suministration of those proteins that the animal had to elaborate otherwise, and more "eficient" yet, to turn them in cannibals by forcing them to eat their own proteins, probably prions would have ever appeared. And to "put the cherry on top of the cake", once the problem was discovered, on purpose it was decided by local authoroties, to "shut up" and remain silent about the problem to the rest of the world, giving the nature of prions the possibility to spread all over the world. It wasn`t by chance, my friend, but negligence of humans and humans only.

My apologies to Mokele, for my post which could have been taken as a mock (although it never was), and my thanks to Sisyphus and Jayhawker, who really helped me to understand Mokele`s post by clarifing the concept, that I didn´t understand at the moment, sincerely.

Sorry my friend, but I don´t understand this affirmation. Are you suggesting that somewhere in time (200.000 years ago), there was a human being capable to reproduce itself, without the participation of a partner of the opposite sex , and its offspring continued reproducing through the rest of time, without the mixing of its genetic pool with the rest of the human beings that existed at a given time ? (kind of a way out of proportion inbreeding). It doesn´t make sense.

Imho, you must seek for scientific reasons of why should you reintroduce the specie or not within the same area that studies environments and Ecology. In the first place you should know perfectly clear the reasons that lead to the extinction of the specie. If that interrogative, isn´t perfectly clear and you don`t make the adjustments to fix the issue, you could reintroduce the specie and maybe in some years to come it could probably disappear once again. Second you should consider that everytime a given specie disappears from any given habitat, the habitat must make arrangements in it in order to assure the subsistence of it by reaching a new equilibrium, and if you reintroduce the specie after more than 40 years of its original dissapearing, maybe the results in that habitat could be more damaging than the absence of the dissapeared specie, by forcing it to regain a new equilibrium, that is probable that it will not be as it was in the first place. Another very important issue, you don`t really know if the reintroduced specie will have the same behaviour than the specie that originally lived in the habitat, therefore the outcome of the reintroduction of it can be more hazardous to the environment than its lack (it will need another period of adjustment, that the habitat can probably not absorve). Well another point to consider, is that in most experiments done throughout the world with the introduction of a diferent specie from a diferent habitat, the results of it, have been more damaging than the solution expected in the first place with the introduction of the new specie. Examples of this are very numerous, but I think that in the case of Australia, they have had to learn about this "sour drink", with some of their experiments in the area (rabbits, coyotes that were suposed to eat rabbits but prefered eating other species instead, camels who resulted more succesful than the local fauna, and the Brazilian Amazon toad, which not having any natural predators have multiplied its numbers to proportions of a plague, etc.) In the specific case of the American Burbot, I don`t think that it was the same specie as in the Brittish one, since their evolution in time and distance, probably has made them differenciate one from the other, to make two subspecies of it. :-)

Don´t confuse natural resistance, with better drug treatments of illness. Our best actual response to their infections, has nothing related to natural selection, it is only due to pharmaceutical development. If there wouldn`t be any development in this area, probably the numbers of dead and spread of any given disease, would be counted as in the past, with great global Pandemias . The avent of better drugs, probably affects natural selection by decreasing the inmune response to those affections, making us more dependent on those, or other drugs used for treatment.

Physics behind blood vessel constriction and blood pressure?
Rickdog replied to scilearner's topic in Physics
Very true, my friend (my error in not pointing it out correctly on my first post). So they aren´t considered here, only Arterial and Venous systems, blood vessels are. ( to not get misunderstood, when I said that different elements will stay in the surrounding tissue, it´s not refered to the main vessel(vein) but to the area from where it comes). In the case of the Venous Syndrome, edema (tissue with infiltrated liquid) will get formed in the lower limbs, due to the failure of the venous valves. -
Physics behind blood vessel constriction and blood pressure?
Rickdog replied to scilearner's topic in Physics
And Capillaries aren´t blood vessels ? Also there is internal permeability in other blood vessels, such as venous valves who regulate the return of blood towards the heart in peripheral veins. In case of the "venous syndrome", there is is a disfunction of these valves, which causes an increase in total blood pressure, due to the stasis of blood in peripheral regions (usually in the legs, in case of humans).
