I think anti freeze is mainly methanol, havn't a clue about the purity though.

I'm not if this has been developed further, but a few years ago a vaccine was created that allowed anti bodies to bind onto nicotine molecules in your blood. This prevented nicotene from crossing the blood brain barrier, essentialy preventing you from feeling the effects of smoking. Similar vaccines were also developed for cocaine. see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/3092690.stm My question is, hypothetically if this vaccine was developed further to stay active for years, would it be right to vaccinate young children and babies so they could never smoke, or should everyone have the right to choose regardless?

Yt, out of interest, is it easy enough to grow chillis outdoors in the UK, or do you need a greenhouse?
-
Maybe the pains more bearable under the influence of alcohol

I recently heard a radio program on the science of taste and they talked about Capsaicin which is the main 'hot' chemical in foods like chillis etc. As capsaicin is a non polar molecule, apparantly its best to drink other non polar liquids i.e. milk or beer, which the capsaicin is souluble in. Whereas water is polar, and just makes it worse as it doesn't remove it, it just swishes it around your mouth.

Apparantly the areas are in the basal ganglia and parental lobe. Interseting article I found - http://unisci.com/stories/20011/0227013.htm

Methanol (CH3OH) and methanal (CH2O) are different compounds. Methanal or formaldehyde is an aldehyde and can be made, like you said, by oxidizing methanol using a weak oxidizing agent like tollens or fehlings solution.
-
No formaldehyde is just the trivial name where as methanal is the IUPAC name with which the structure can be deduced. In the same way glucose can also be called 6-(hydroxymethyl)oxane-2,3,4,5-tetrol but it's damn sight harder to say.

SCIENCE: BREAD IS DANGEROUS 1. More than 98 percent of convicted felons are bread users. 2. Fully HALF of all children who grow up in bread-consuming households score below average on standardized tests. 3. In the 18th century, when virtually all bread was baked in the home, the average life expectancy was less than 50 years; infant mortality rates were unacceptably high; many women died in childbirth; and diseases such as typhoid, yellow fever, and influenza ravaged whole nations. 4. More than 90 percent of violent crimes are committed within 24 hours of eating bread. 5. Bread has been proven to be addictive. Subjects deprived of bread and given only water to eat, begged for bread after as little as two days. 6. Bread is often a "gateway" food item, leading the user to "harder" items such as butter, jelly, peanut butter, and even cream cheese. 7. Bread has been proven to absorb water. Since the human body is more than 90 percent water, it follows that eating bread could lead to your body being taken over by this absorptive food product, turning you into a soggy, gooey, bread-pudding person. 8. Newborn babies can choke on bread. 9. Bread is baked at temperatures as high as 450 degrees Fahrenheit! That kind of heat can kill an adult in less than two minutes. 10. Most American bread eaters are utterly unable to distinguish between significant scientific fact and meaningless statistical babbling.

Is it wise to drink aspirin when you have a headache?
aj47 replied to alice's topic in Anatomy, Physiology and Neuroscience
You might to alternate beweem different types of painkillers to reduce the risk of harm and tolerance, but if your taking it in moderation I wouldn't worry about it. -
hmm maybe I should decline my offer and apply for your uni next year, would they accept me on the basis that i'm amazing at ultimate frisbee?

How is the brain involved in judging how much time passes between events? For example if i were fall asleep, on waking I would automaticaly know if I had been sleeping for half an hour or six hours. Or thinking back to my childhood if I think of two memories from a similar age, I always know which one occured first. How does your brain order memories like this?
-
I dont know if you've visted the Uni yet but I went for an interview recently I was told they have the biggest student union in the UK and 10% of the inner city population are students, so really its one of the best uni's for socialising. Anyway Sheffield is my second choice so theres a chance I could be at the same uni as you next year.

Ah so many stupid things but to start.... 1)I once managed to obtain a photograph of a particulaly unpopular teacher at my school, drew all over it and modified his face with paintshop, printed out several copies to distrubute around school and then realised my school username id was printed at the bottom of each page. 2)Every summer when it was hot, me and a few friends would always jump off a bridge near us into the river. I would always check if boats were coming from underneath but one time I forgot, jumped off, landed on a rowing boat and broke my ankle. I managed to make the local paper and a 'danger do not jump off the bridge' sign was quickly put up. 3)One time after coming out of a pub, decided it would be hilarious to car jump a car which stopped at a zebra crossing. Turns out my mums best friend was in the car.

But to make any significant difference to the weight, you would need several times as much as a bag full which would be too bulky and impractical.

How harsh is that on the kid, funny though.

It would proabably be preferable to choose non poisonous gases.

But in the same way as life after death, we cannot disprove the idea of a previous life, assuming we had no memory of it.

I agree almost all of rap/hipohop on the radio is a load of crap but there is a lot of good stuff out there, you just have to find it. I.e. Guru, Ty, Life, Roots Manuva, Quasimoto... just to name a few

Just a quickie.. When you exercise a particular part of your body, do you only break down the fat near the muscles you use, or is fat throughout your body broken down?

My sister used to suffer from social anxiety to an extent where she couldn't walk out of the house with out having a panic attack. After seeing a hypnotherapist who worked with her for about a month, she completely regained her conidence and is now fairly out going. So yes I would say hypnotherapy definately does work. Also you might want to listen to this... http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/Shows/Archive.htm It's a good episode on hypnotherapy by the naked scientist. (scroll down and click on 6th March 2005 episode)

Yea your right, my mistake it should be..... [math]\Delta G = \Delta H - T \Delta S[/math] at standard conditions.
