  2. Wow thats great, im going to become so lazy with chemistry now.
  3. An Irish daughter had not been home for over 5 years. Upon her return, her father cursed her. Where have ye been all this time? Why did ye not write to us, not even a line? Why didn't ye call? Can ye not understand what ye put yer old mum thru? The girl, crying, replied, "Sniff, sniff....dad....I became a prostitute...." "Ye what!!? Out of here, ye shameless harlot! Sinner! You're a disgrace to this family." "OK, dad-- as ye wish. I just came back to give mum this luxurious fur coat, title deed to a ten bedroom mansion plus a savings certificate for $5 million." "For me little brother, this gold Rolex and for ye daddy, the sparkling new Mercedes limited edition convertible that's parked outside plus a membership to the country club....(takes a breath)....and an invitation for ye all to spend New Years' Eve on board my new yacht in the Riviera, and...." Now what was it ye said ye had become?" says dad. Girl, crying again, "Sniff, sniff....a prostitute dad! Sniff, sniff. "Oh! Be Jesus! Ye scared me half to death, girl! I thought ye said a Protestant. Come here and give yer old man a hug.
  4. Gibbs free energy combines both entropy and enthalpy values in the equation.... [math]G =H-TS[/math] If the value comes out greater than 0, the reaction is thought to be feasible.
  5. You would think that any bonding to the fullerene would make it unstable due to unequal charge density etc but it doesn't seem to be the case?. Anyway yea i'll check out that book it looks good and I have a vauge feeling I saw it in my library. I don't think buying it is an option, $100 is a bit too steep with my lowly newsagent salary.
  6. Really interesting links thanks. One thing though, it talks about the metals transferring electrons to the fulleren cage, does this mean that the doped metal ions become incorporated into the fullerene structure or can they freeley move about inside?
  7. On a random side note, do you think it would be possible to extract manganese metal by electrolosis of a manganese solution i.e. KMno4/MnSO4?
  8. I have just been reading a text book that talks about the discovery of Buckminsterfullerene, and how research is on the way to incorporate molecules into the strucure. As the text is so old I would guess it has already been achieved but I can't find any info on the net, any of you know if this has been done yet?
  9. How about mixing them both with a little sugar, that should make a nice rocket mix.
  10. lol, no really i've literally spent hours on the toilet before, tetris wastes so much of your time.
  11. In my loo, i've had a gameboy with tetris on for about a year. I find that pretty addictive.
  12. On a side note, do any of you listen to any science podcasts? I used to listen to the new scientist podcast but I recently discovered the 'naked scientist' which is a lot better. You can listen to it here.. http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/Shows/streaming_media.htm
  13. Mainly NaCl but you can also find epsom salts, potassium salts, iodine salts in small quantities.
  14. It appears that ''www.whatisthesecret.com'' doesn't work
  15. Aha thanks guys, great info. I realised the main mishap from my previous brew is that I mixed and matched equipment from a wine fementing and beer brewing kit and didn't realise the importance of steralizing the equipment, which led to a few odd tasting pints. Anyway this time i'm feeling slightly more motivated and i'm actually going to do some researh and attempt to create something that tastes half decent. One thing though, from what i've read most home brewers use chemicals i.e sodium metabisulphite for steralising. Are these really neccessary or would a simple bleach solution be enough to kill any bacteria etc present? Also I had an idea about calculating the alcohol content today. If I were to titrate a known amount of the alcohol with an oxiding agent such as acidified potassium dichromate or permangante, you could work out how much ethanol was oxidised to ethanoic acid and therefore the alcohol content. Although this would only work if the ethanol was the only thing being oxidised which I doubt it would be.
  16. What's OSG and FSG. I have little to no experience with brewing so I am very much at the amateur/experimental stage.
  17. hmm I didn't follow any recipe but off the top of my head it was roughly 1.5Kg for each demijohn, which is about 8 pints I think.
  18. I recently rediscovered my brewing kit and decided i'd have a go at making some good ol' home brew, however I forgot when it was meant to be bottled and it was left fermenting for about two weeks too long. Hopeing for the best, me and a few friends drank a pint each today at lunch to find that I have created some kind of super brew which i'm still feeling te effects of four hours later. I'm guessing it's roughly 7-8% but i'd really like to know exactly. Do any of you know of a way I can test my brew to see how alcoholic it really is?
  19. You can survive just off a loan, but its always nicer to have a bit of extra money. Also you don't have to pay back your loan straight away after Uni, only when you earn over a certain amount, I think its £16,000 in the UK. For example my brother left university six or seven years ago, but earns hardly anything so hasn't payed any of it back yet. If I were you I would go find a careers person to talk to, they know all about this stuff.
  20. I work in a newsagents and we sell a lot of Ukash vouchers via paypoint machines. There quite popular so i'm sure they're secure
  21. Basically yea, but when I'm there I'll probably look for a part time job just so I don't have to dig too much into an overdraft.
  22. Great info, much appreciated.
  23. If your going to study sciences in particular subjects like Chemistry and Physics which are undersubscribed to, there will be loads of diffrerent loans you can apply for. I'm studying Chemistry at UCL next year and aslong as I get BBC in my A levels, I'm eligible for a £3000 grant from Glaxo-smith-klein with what appears to be no strings attached. Also I'm not sure if its the same in Canada but in the UK, things like loans and tution fee's are dependant on your families income so if your not that well off now you will get some finacial help.
  24. My memories of that weekend are bit fuzzy, but yea I definately remember a similar performer there that year.
