  1. Hmm, yea going to buy some anyway but would have been fun to extract it myself, as i'm in a experimenting kinda mood. Ah well.
  2. ah interesting, thanks for the links
  3. yea thats what I meant by displacement but I can't really get my hands on any potassium. I think Ive come to my own conclusion that it would be pretty much impossible with out investing in some highly expensive equiment which I cannot afford on my shop assitant salary. But any of you know if I could easily buy a few grams on the interenet?

    G. W Bush...

Lmao, I feel for you, I'm half American and living in the U.K and when I tell people they always seem to look at me with sympathy and say things like 'unlucky mate' or just flat out laugh.
  5. not sure about melting it, as it has a melting point of 801C which I very much doubt I could get to, or sustain in my house. I think if anything I would need some extremely inert and electrically conductive solvent to dissolve it in but I havn't a clue what or even if any exists.
  6. Do any of you know a way in which I could succesfully extract sodium from salt? Obviously displacments out of the question as I cannot get my hands on any highly reactive metals but would electrolysis be succesful. If yes what solvent would be needed as I guess water could not be used due to the formation of NaOH? Realsitically is this possible with my limited apparatus or completely out of the question?
  7. Would you say light energy always works by being converted into heat energy? Becasue by definition temperature is the extent of the vibration of atoms in a substance which is also the effect of light has.
  8. Diazepam and clomethiazole are others also used in the treatment of alcoholism.

    Shyness

I have always been reasonably confidence and not afraid to approach people I did not know, but in the last year I have had a random drop in my confidence. I'm increasingly shy and withdrawn finding it hard to talk to people I do not know, but I havn't a clue why. Anyone had anything similar as its really annoying me.

    hair loss?!

Does baldness run in your family, that could be an indication.
  11. I think the doesage required to feel any ill effects are around 1 or 2 units of alcohol (depending on the person) so i wouldn't think small amounts would have any effect. Interestingly, apparantly almost all asians inherit an inactive form of the enzyme that is inhibited by disulpharim, which is why there are so few alcoholics in countries such as China and India.
  12. huh, expand
  13. How many surrealists does it take to change a light bulb...... Fish
  14. I heard the other day that there putting wheels on every bed so being left in a corridor on a trolley is now classed as having a bed. The NHS is a bit of a joke but I think the majority of problems stem from a lack of budget.
  15. Often recovering alcoholics choose to take Disulfiram as opposed to drugs that manipulate neurotransmitters. As far as I know it inhibits an enzyme and allows a certain chemical to build up in your blood. The results is, on drinking you automatically experience nausea headaches and vomiting. Therefore you associate alcohol intake with the unpleasnt effects and it quickly loses its appeal.
  16. I've just read quite an interesting book on the brain and it suggests that we remember every event and every image of our entire lives but the memories just stay dormant. Several tests were carried out with LSD on patients and some of these people began to recall memories of thier time in the womb, accuractly describing the way the blood moves and its stucture. Other patients apparantly recalled memories of birth and what the doctors surgery looked like which was later shown to be true. Its an interesting concept and some of the proof is quite astounding, but not sure if I can really believe it. Personally I would find it a bit disturbing if I could remember my own birth.
  17. Are you suggesting the possiblity of gravity not being a constant then? EDIT- sorry didn't read your first post properly

    Random Numbers

Very interesting, thanks for the responses. So all of these tecniques generate psuedo random numbers with the exception of the use of atomic radioation, right? This got me thinking, do you think that there is underlying order in every aspect of nature such as atomic decomposition, but becasue the order is so inistricably complex we assume its random?
  19. yea i looked and can't seem to find it there
  20. Basically my computers running ridiculously slow so im going to completely reboot it. Random Numbers

I'm assuming that no mathematical formula can generate random numers so by what principle do random number generators work?. Are they just approximations (e.g. using things like the time in equations that give numbers that appear random) or can truly random numbers be generated?
  22. I agree, I think there should be at least three, Organic, inorganic and physical.
  23. You mean like the gun off the film 'Leon'. I so want that gun
