  1. Reminds me of a great quote by Winston Churchill that always makes me laugh... Lady Astor- Sir, you are drunk again!' Churchill - Yes, madam, I am drunk. But in the morning I will be sober and you will still be ugly.
  2. Recently where I live there was a nasty incident when a man got into into an argument in a pub and ended up being stabbed to death by one of a group of teenagers. The funny thing is there was about twenty witnesses and as where I live is such a small place, everybody knows who it was. Yet apparently they don't have enough evidence to charge him because they got so many conflicting statements from the people there. I imagine he'll get caught soon though I guess these things just take time.
  3. Apologies but I wasn't implying people should go out and blindly attempt the method I originally pointed out. The whole point of me posting it was to discuss the method in question to see if people thought it was an acceptable alternative. People shouldn't attempt alternative methods if they have no understading of the chemicals used and no information of there safety but I see no problem with them being carried out if they are discussed before hand and shown to be safe.
  4. true but to make conc nitric acid from KNO3 and H2SO4 is quite hard without distilling equipment. With the method in question the KNO3 and H2SO4 are mixed to give a crude nitrating mix with alot of impurities i.e potassium sulphate whch still works but is not as effective.
  5. I seem to remember reading a method which used KNO3 and H2SO4 for the nitration although from what I've heard its quite tempromental. I'll post it if I find it.
  6. My ever increasing list is..... Stop buying useless crap I know I don't need and start saving my wages each month Plan where i'm going to go travelling this year (half done) Keep in contact with friends from last year Get a better/well paid job (I'm a cleaner in an old peoples home....its pretty horrible) and... Go running every day I'll probably add another ten things on to that list before new years eve.
  7. Just a quick question... Quite often hcb, parlon, pvc etc are added to star forumlas to give a better colour but why is this. I understand they act as a chlorine donor to provide a chloride ion for the reaction, but why does this result in a more intense colour?
  8. Thanks for the replies. I'm off tomorrow to buy my Christmas tree at the garden centre so i'll look out for the ammonium nitrate. Failling that would dilute nitric acid work. I seem to remember you can quite easily buy 30% as 'p.h. down' for soil.

    Memorable Gigs

Check out http://www.lders.nl/ or and listen to some of thier new songs, it might keep you entertained till they come to the states. I seriously can't wait till there new album comes out, its not for another year but i'm still ridiculoulsly excited. ..and snail walking out of a radiohead gig is shameful, I think some type of penance is in order. also this was the guillemots photo I was talking about...
  10. I have a fair amount of Strontium Carbonate i'm willing to experiment with and was wondering whether it could be used as a starting point to give Strontium Nitrate My first thought was to react the Carbonate with Acetic acid to give Strontium Acetate, which in turn could be reacted with Kno3 to give Strotium Nitrate. However looking up solubilities, the values for Strontium Acetate/Nitrate and Potassium Nitrate are all quite similar so I can't think how one would easily to seperate the products. Any of you have any ideas?

    Memorable Gigs

I think most memorable was probably seeing Radiohead last May. I absolutely love them so I had no regrets in spending three hours on the internet and phone trying to get tickets, then failing that paying triple the price on ebay. It was just a great gig, really good atmosphere and a perfect set list. Another great gig recently was seeing the Guillemots at my local fopp. It was only advertised about a week before and the venue was this tiny room so there was only about 40 people there. They are absolutely amazing live and the lead singer was walking around the crowd during the set inviting people up to dance/sing on the stage with him etc. It was all a little crazy but so much fun. The thing that made the gig though was that two of my friends were really annoyed that couldn't make it, so after we managed to persuade the band to hold up a sign saying 'we hate..' then there names on a piece of paper which we took a photo of and sent to them. Immature but hilarious at the time, I'll upload it if I find it. Other memorable gigs were.... Machine Head - I almost went for the novelty of seeing the mosh pitt. Saying this band is heavy is an understament, just aproaching the outskirts of the crowd was enough to put yourself in pain. It was great fun though. Foo Fighters - I didn't actually think I'd like them much as I did as there one of those bands I overplayed too much and got bored with but they were awesome, and combined with the atmosphere of the weekend at Reading festival, it was definitely one of my favourite gigs. ...and for no reasons other than being amazing bands.. Ronisize, Jehst, Bloc Party, The Pixies, Silverchair, The Orbital and JJ72 were all amazing.

    Magnetite

Pottery Suppliers should sell it under the name of 'Black Iron Oxide'. It's rather cheap aswell IIRC
  15. There are a few ways to increase seratonin levels without the aid of SSRI's i.e regular exercise, balanced diet etc but if you are taking Celexa on prescription for depression/anxiety, it's really something you should be discussing with your doctor. Anti depressants are well known to be problematic in that the side effects are numerous and vary greatly between people. Usually it takes a little trial and error on the doctors part find the right dosage and prescription to suit you. However if you want to stop taking medication completly you should way up the pro's and cons decide whether it would really be beneficial for you to stop.
  16. Isn't prosopagnosia a just a specific type of Visual Agnosia though?
  17. Actually I asked this question on another forum and I was told 'An Anthropoligist on Mars' by Oliver Sacks in parts talks of Visual Agnonsia caused by childhood blindness, so I recently went out and bought it. Although I havn't quite reached the relavant parts I also read 'The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat' where he talks about Visual Agnosia and gives the example of the muscian who had trouble recognising faces after damaging areas of his visual cortex (hence the title of the book). But yea I agree Oliver Sacks books are facisnating.
  18. Interesting thanks.
  19. 3-(2-aminoethyl)-1H-indol-5-ol often called 5-Hydroxytryptamine, is one of many potentially deadly chemicals that the youth of today shouldn't be messing with. With moderate levels of 5-Hydroxytryptamine in the brain, users find themselves to be functional, sleep well, and have a chemical induced happiness that they can't live with out. This leads to a serious addiction that in almost all cases will last for life. A recent survey showed the majority of the population were oblivious to the dangers associated with high levels of 5-Hydroxytryptamine. These side effects range from moderate to fatal and include mental confusion, hypomania, hallucinations, agitation, headache, shivering, sweating, fever, hypertension, tachycardia, nausea, diarrhea, myoclonus/clonus, hyperreflexia, tremor, coma and finally death. Conversly serious discorders such as clinical depression, anxiety, bipolar, migranes and the deadly SIDS have been linked to low 5-Hydroxytryptamine levels. Many people think a society full of chemical induced happy people would be a great place to live however sadly this is not the case. Scientist predict that 100% of rapists, murderers, and burgulars have had measurable levels of 5-Hydroxytryptamine in thier bodies, showing an unmistakable link between this chemical and criminal behaviour. fMri scans of users brains have also shown levels of other potentially deadly chemicals such as 4-(2-aminoethyl)benzene-1,2-diol which has been linked with psycosis and the deadly 2-(acetyloxy)-N,NN,N-trimethylethansminium known to causes seizures. This undoubtedly proves this chemical acts as a gateway to these other potentially dangerous substances. 5-Hydroxytryptamine = Seratonin 4-(2-aminoethyl)benzene-1,2-diol = Dopamine 2-(scetyloxy)-N,NN,N-trimethylethansminium - acetylocholine
  20. I would have thought the solution would be acidic enough to break down these layers, especially for iron and magnesium.
  21. I too tried this experiment last night and had alot of fun testing out various substances. I found most organic materials were easily oxidised but with metal powders i.e. Mg, Al and Fe there was no reaction. This suprised me giving how easily oxidised the metals are with weaker oxidizing agent agents i.e. KNO3, KMno4. Does anyone know why this is? Could it be a structure thing like sulphur?

    Sandwiches

Not if you live three miles out of town.
  23. Of course, I agree, but personally there's an extent to how much I want my body cut up and fiddled with after I die and donating organs reaches it. Again I know it's unnecessary to think like that as when your dead your dead, but I couldn't deal with the idea that the majority of my body wasn't resting in a grave. I guess i'm just being squemish. Anyway are you saying that you would donate your body to science then?
  24. I finally got round to applying for my provisional the other day, and on the application form it had a section where I could put my name down to be an organ donar. I ticked to donate all of the organs on the list, but it took me a while to bring myself to tick the 'any part of my body' box. I know it's silly but I suddenly had an image of a couple of bones, a few fingers and a pile of limbs in my coffin. On a different topic, would any of you donate your body to science to be cut up and studied?
