You give a formula appropriate to an ideal (not real or practical) transformer. In a real transformer Ns.Is will be less than Np.Ip

You cannot call the Wankel Rotary a unique feature concerning the Honda car. It was invented in 1957 and has been used in various cars since then. Follow the link and scroll down to Engine Technologies - Wankel Engine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_automotive_superlatives

Conduction of electrons through a vacuum
TonyMcC replied to CSte88's topic in Modern and Theoretical Physics
Not as far as I know. What I said was a magnetic field can deflect a moving electron. -
It certainly is "doable". Not only that you can buy devices to combat it if you think you are being affected. I don't want to advertise any particular device but if you google -bugging lasers - and then chose "Laser surveillance on eBay" you should find reference to an Anti-Ease Dropping electronic device. (I think they mean Anti - Eaves Dropping). The description of how this device works also gives a brief description of the device it combats, which is based on pointing a laser at a window.

Pure water is unusual in that its minimum volume occurs at about 4 degrees C. It will expand at temperatures both above and below this. In an ice covered pond the temperature at the deepest part is usually about 4 degrees C which helps creatures such as frogs to survive.

Moon "mountains" have been generally formed from asteroid impacts and are really the rims of craters. Even so they are much higher than mountains on earth which has a lot to do with the moon's low gravity.

Should Christianity adopt Islam’s laws of sins of the flesh?
TonyMcC replied to Greatest I am's topic in Religion
As far as I know a man may have up to 4 wives in Islam, but a woman may not have 4 husbands. Why is this (assuming I am right)? -
I believe it has been found that the smaller the force of gravity on a planet, the higher will be the mountains and the deeper will be the valleys. http://www.ph.bham.ac.uk/schools/mars.shtml

I am no mathmetician! Just interested in FLT which I have pondered about. It is obvious that there is always a solution from the following idea:- Take two cubes made of wax (call them A and B) and measure their sides. Roll them together and form them into a new cube and measure its side (call it C). From the measurements we can say A^3+B^3=C^3. Everything that I have read so far involves integers. This leads to the idea that perhaps there is a pattern of integers that can be found where the solution C will always be an integer but it always "lands" on an integer which is not a number cubed. I wonder, since that approach hasn't led to a solution over more than 400 years, whether there may be another way of looking at the problem. I wonder why Fermat's original statement appeared against work on triangles. After some thought along these lines I felt that there must be a reason why a triangle formed from A B and C taken from A^n+B^n=C^n cannot have 3 integers (n>2). This led to my conjecture:- "In every correct sum a^n +b^n = c^n, if n is a whole number >2 and a, b and c are positive numbers >0 then one or more of the terms a, b or c is irrational." I have never seen anyone else claim this. Being a conjecture it proves nothing and so cannot be used as part of a proof. However it can be used in what I would call a "conditional" proof - the condition being that the conjecture can be proved. Of course if the conjecture can be proved false everything developed from it fails as well. So, can anyone prove or disprove my conjecture?

First things first - Whatever you do the maximum power you will get from an 8 hp engine is 8 hp and the maximum power you will get from a 6.5 hp engine is 6.5 hp. In other words the smaller engine will be less powerful. I imagine a belt from the pulley you describe runs round another pulley that rotates the shredder blades. In order to to maintain rotation when shredding you need to gear down the link between motor and shredder blades. This can be achieved by either reducing the size of the motor's pulley or increasing the size of the pulley that rotates the blades. This will reduce the speed of blade rotation but allow the blades to apply sufficient force. I haven't done any calculation, but its probably not that critical - I would try a 3.5 inch pulley in place of the 4 inch pulley.

Some conditions do reveal themselves via pulse abnormalities. I have quite recently been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. This was picked up by my doctor who found my pulse erratic and missing beats. It was then confirmed at my local hospital using an E.C.G..

I don't think spending a lot of money on a system that wont need updating for many years is a practical proposition. Program development and operating system size demands more and more of everything on an exponential curve. Take your suggestion for 16 GBytes of ram for example. It sounds a lot but you have to wonder why some versions of Windows7 can handle 192 GBytes. What do Windows developers know that we don't know? Probably the most economical path is to buy (or make up) a computer that very comfortably meets your needs with a fair margin and resign yourself to a decision to update or buy new when developments dictate (IMO).

This is obviously a sensitive subject. However examination of DNA can be used to point to race. It just so happens that we have had a serial rapist convicted of his crimes in the UK. According to a TV program it was known that the criminal was of caribean origin long before he was arrested from examination of his DNA. I think the healthy attitude is to say clearly that different races do have different attributes, but that we are all human beings who should be treated with the same respect.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think you cannot get horse power from E=MC2. Power being the rate of usage of energy. Its a bit like saying my car has 10 gallons of fuel so how powerful is it?

A quick google around the web convinces me that birds are the only living descendents of dinosaurs. I wondered about crocodiles, but apparently they are reptiles and not related to dinosaurs.

I think that when you are logically developing an idea step by step with complete understanding of each step you are not acting intuitively. Intuition (IMO) comes into play when the logical process seems to come to an end. At this time another approach, or gap filler in the logical chain, might seem to come "out of nowhere" and allow further development of your idea. This (again IMO) would be intuition.

I think my ideas are likely incorrect........ Several years ago I was impressed by a TV program on "Fermat's Last Theorem" given by Prof. Andrew Wiles. I was particularly stirred by the emotion that he displayed in the program. As a result I have spent some of my spare time chewing on this problem and like to discuss it with like minded people. I realise that my chances of finding a simple solution must be as close to zero as makes no difference - but it is pleasant to daydream now and then!

Conduction of electrons through a vacuum
TonyMcC replied to CSte88's topic in Modern and Theoretical Physics
If going into minor practical effects you might like to consider magnetic fields associated with planets. A magnetic field can deflect electrons from a straight path. -

Conduction of electrons through a vacuum
TonyMcC replied to CSte88's topic in Modern and Theoretical Physics
You could look up how a cathode ray tube (CRT) works. Basically electrons have a negative charge and so can be attracted to a positive potential. In a vacuum there is nothing to impede the electrons in their movement toward the positive potential. Electrons can be emitted from their source by heat. In the CRT the heated emitter is known as the cathode and the positive collector of electrons is known as an anode. -
Surely, you mean "Oh Xenu" mooeypoo - Actually I did mean God. He is master of all us members of the Second Spanish Inquisition to whom we pay homage as we stack our firewood ,keep our tinder dry and make our list of Scientific Heretics.
