  1. Do know what would have happened if it had been three wise WOMEN instead of men, don’t you? They would have asked for directions, arrived on time, helped deliver the baby, cleaned the stable, made a casserole, and brought disposable diapers as gifts! This is an old joke - but it does underline the fact that many people believe women think things over more rationally than men.
  2. Perhaps the electron doesn't move at all ? Perhaps we cannot think of it as a small body in orbit around the nucleus? http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/newton/askasci/1993/physics/PHY112.HTM
  3. Yes - that is one of the proposals. Office hours etc. would be the same throughout much of Europe and the UK aiding communication. I guess they had to call it something! Perhaps if the proposal is accepted they might call it something more logically correct! Come to think of it perhaps the name would be ok because the change in summer time would be double the change in the winter time ?
  4. An electrically assisted bicycle uses a 200W motor which has no difficulty in maintaining 15 mph along the flat. This falls nicely within the limits given by CaptainPanic.
  5. My understanding is that two systems are being considered. The first is using GMT in the winter and GMT+2 hours in the summer which would be expected to increase tourism because of the long, light summer evenings. The second is using GMT+1 hours in the winter and GMT+2 hours in the summer. As well as boosting tourism in the summer months it would put the clocks in the UK in step with much of Europe which would be good for business.
  6. Whales have vestigial legs supporting the theory that in their evolutionary past they were land animals. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vestigiality#Animals
  7. If you would like friends you regularly visit to remove their shoes when they visit you then you should automatically remove your own shoes when visiting them. Also leave your own shoes in your hallway when your put on your slippers so visitors will see them. These actions will probably make words unnecessary.
  8. In the uk several years ago the government, via the Post Office, set up a banking system called "National Girobank". It provided convenient and cheap banking, particularly for "the working man". I was one of its customers and was more than satisfied with the service. It also caused a big stir and shake up of the commercial banks. However, after some years it was sold off to the private sector. When I read about the salaries and bonuses presently paid to banking executives and see that my meagre savings don't even earn enough to keep pace with inflation then I wish the government would step in again and set up some sensible and convenient banking system - I would join it as a customer like a shot! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girobank
  9. It seems the tsumani was a greater threat to the nuclear installations than the earthquake. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but I have to wonder why the installations were built on low lying land near the sea. Probably because they needed sea water for cooling purposes?
  10. Some people seem to feel that showing approval or disapproval through the "+" "-" facility is quite important. Perhaps there could be 3 buttons "approve","disapprove", "neutral". It could be arranged that the "reply" button would not operate unless one of the first three buttons had first been selected.
  11. It doesn't directly answer the question, but the two women mentioned in this article no doubt tried to save a lot of money! http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2868980/women_attempt_to_board_plane_with_corpse.html
  12. Do animals dream? Having owned dogs and seeing them twitching in their sleep, moving their limbs and making small noises I am convinced that they do. Can they imagine indulging in sexual acts? I googled - animal masturbation - and apparently its quite common. So if they can experience these two things then I would think that "wet dreams" are quite likely.
  13. I have been driving for more than 50 years without an accident. I count myself lucky not to have suddenly come across many Mr Skeptics!
  14. You could put bigger diameter wheels on the back so that the vehicle is always running downhill...................Only joking!
  15. I is thinkin your idea may be well good - innit.
  16. Speaking as a quite old man I would say don't worry - I well remember driving my parents mad when I was your age by continually letting them know I was so bored. Things will soon change, you have a bit more development to work your way through first and that will happen. Soon you will find that other people and your relationship with them will become more important to you than your own feelings of "I'm so bored". Perhaps you could find and develop an interest in something. The other thing that added to my feelings of "what can I do to relieve these feelings of going nowhere in a sea of boredom " was a lack of money! If that is not part of your problem then you could take up something like gliding. You are old enough to fly solo. A lot of people are involved in getting gliders in the air! You might find youself driving tractors, operating winches, holding wing tips and running with them for the first few metres of the launch. There will also be a social side. This is just one idea. I am sure that if this does not appeal then you can think of something. By the way, now I am in what might quaintly be called the Autumn of my life, I look back and see that as soon as I emerged from my time of boredom I entered a very exciting, interesting and fullfilling life - I am sure you will do the same.
  17. True - but usually earth is regarded as zero, e.g to be precise one might ask "how do I measure a voltage which is negative with respect to (w.r.t.) earth?"
  18. Can also be measured on a cathode ray oscilloscope set to a dc range. The trace will lower itself instead of lifting.
  19. Actually the paperclip doesn't melt under these circumstances. The wire fractures because of low-cycle fatigue. It will probably get hot particularly if the bending back and forth is rapid enough - but not melt.
  20. The object of war is not to die for your country but to make the other bastard die for his. George S. Patton
  21. Does the road wind up-hill all the way? Yes, to the very end. Will the day's journey take the whole long day? From morn to night, my friend. Grantland Rice I think this quote is somewhat similar in its meaning.
  22. I guess he meant death is the end of "wanting". Not wanting anything means you can't be in a state of unsatisfaction. ???
  23. Lucidfifties alertnappy sauce slobperm hewn suing anagsarm!
  24. It probably varies with different capacitors and/or manufacturers. You need a specification sheet (imo). One example is shown in fig.3 of the link showing 25 turns. (10 truns looking "useful"). http://www.hatdaw.com/papers/sb_12.pdf
