  1. I have a fairly wide experience of electronic applications but this one was new to me. Always interested in different ways to use electricity/electronics/magnetism etc..
  2. An interesting application - although this is another electromagnetic application.
  3. Apparently the motion of molten iron rich material in the earth's core is reponsible for the earth's magnetic field. I suppose molten iron counts as a liquid.
  4. A couple considering becoming parents can, if they so wish, be genetically screened to determine the likelyhood of genetic risks to any offspring. I think it likely that as this service becomes more developed and accepted it will become quite a commonly used facility. Some people may decide not to marry or not to produce children. I suppose that many people in this day and age if told that they have (say) a 50% chance of producing a child with (say) Down's syndrome will go ahead with the thought that if that is the result they can have an abortion and try again. I believe that incest with your own child is particularly abhorrent as it is contrary to the normal instinct of protecting your child from harm. Even with an adult child I think the normal instinct is to promote their development toward a happy independent relationship with someone who will make them feel fullfilled in life. Brother and sister - I am not so sure. There does seem to be a natural aversion to the idea but whether that is due to cultural factors or something deeper I have to admit I don't know. Anyway everyone seems to agree that for genetic reasons it is better for siblings to chose partners outside of their immediate family. Going back and rereading the question "why is incest illegal?" I have to say I don't really know but would never sign a petition to have it made legal! Sorry this is a lot of words that don't say much - but it has made me think a bit.
  5. Don't forget to wash your hands after the practical trial!
  6. I don't much mind people deliberately indulging in activities that might give them mental and physical aflictions. However it seems incest may result in not you, but your unborn offspring having these problems. If that can be prevented then I am all for it. It is after all a form of assault on people not yet conceived!
  7. I understand that a natural reflex closes your eyes when you sneeze - perhaps that's how the idea that you could damage your eyes if they didn't close came about?
  8. I'm sure I have read that various forms of incest were the norm among the ruling class of ancient Egypt. I think it is generally believed that this led to various genetically based problems - both physical and mental. It seems therefore a good idea for any government to discourage this activity.
  9. Hi dragonstar, at first sight this seems basically how small a solar cell could be and yet provide all or a useful amount of the power needed for a cell phone. Again at first sight it would seem to be something that could be worked out from data sheets for solar cells and available space on the phone. However there is a detail that perhaps you hadn't thought of. Most women carry their phone in a handbag and most men carry their phone in a pocket. If you carry your phone in "a place where the sun don't shine" the solar cell won't be able to provide much power.
  10. If you want to know how civilised a society is look at how it looks after the disadvantaged members of that society. Although it will never happen we should do what we can to give those people who are mentally, physically or through poverty unable to join the giddy heights to which many of you aspire the same benefits that you enjoy.
  11. In my home Tina Turner is known as Grandad's SECOND favourite Granny.
  12. If you google "soloar powered phone charger" you will find that not only is the idea feasible but they are readily avaiable.
  13. I can see one permanent magnet repelling another and I can see one permanent magnet attracting another. What I can't imagine is a system of permanent magnets rotating continuously without any other input. If you could then you would have perpetual motion and as you seem aware that is considered impossible. Some details such as a diagram would make it easier to comment further.
  14. I can't see what you are getting at. You could have chosen any distance, so the distances you have not chosen could make other rings. You could perhaps include our moon, about 240,000 miles. I must assume I am missing something as you seem to be only saying space exists between bodies.
  15. When I was at secondary school (1948-1954) corporal punishment was completely accepted. Masters could give you up to six strokes of the cane hard enough to raise wheals on your backside and even senior pupils could beat you on the same part of your anatomy with a gym shoe. Two things I would say :- I used to get beaten fairly regularly so the punishment didn't seem to correct my bad behaviour but I'm sure that what would today be classed as abuse certainly hasn't blighted my life in any way either. As far as my life as a father was concerned I would warn my children and if the warning was not heeded they would get a short sharp slap. My children are now in their 40's, they love both me and their mother and quite often say what good and loving parents we were. Oh, and yes, I stopped the short sharp slap treatment many years ago (lol)!!
  16. You may find the following link useful, at least for part of what you want. http://www.play-hookey.com/analog/inside_741.html
  17. There was a time that I carried little containers holding a mixture of chemicals that could kill a man who was a considerable distance from me. These containers were of specific size (say 9mm in diameter) with a special tightly fitting plug made of a heavy metal. It was the plug of heavy metal which could leave the container at high velocity and injure or kill anyone who got in the way. I don't know the specific formula that made up these dangerous chemicals!
  18. http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/health_advice/examinations/mriscan.htm I think this link will give you some info for Q1 http://www.mr-tip.com/serv1.php?type=db1&dbs=Signal%20Intensity I think this will give you some info for Q2
  19. Doppler shift alters the wavelength - i.e frequency not speed. Doppler radar relies on this effect.
  20. Think of yourself riding a bicycle which has gears. I'm sure you would agree that different gears would allow you to climb slopes more easily and go downhill more quickly. Now think of replacing yourself with some sort of engine. A fixed gear would not allow your vehicle the range of possibilities that it would have with multiple gears.
  21. I see you are only 19 so loosen up, chase a girl or two (if that suits your orientation), get some boogie time in. You will only be young for a relatively short time. Perhaps you already have a permanent partner. If so ask them to accept my apologies!
  22. Not really a joke - but this sign in a car park in Burnham, UK made me smile
  23. I'm retired and usually have a little look at my computer quite often and usually am involved in some sort of project. Over the years I have done a bit of family research. I have a son-in-law who likes to join me and we challenge the world to a game of chess as we share a bottle of whisky. I like to play a little poker - but I know it will not make me rich. I call my computer the Oracle as if something comes into question I can usually get an answer from Google. My wife and I have very different interests, she is musical and I am practical - so I get a different form of conversation from this forum. I keep my eye on my bank account and do a little shopping - although I prefer seeing and touching before buying. Although I prefer the telephone I do some emailing - especially where pictures are concerned.
  24. What skyhook says makes good sense. You should do what you can to decide whether your computer system is at fault or your printer. If it is your printer do what you can to decide whether its due to software or hardware. If its the computer system give it a chance to correct itself. Having said all that it seems to be a known corruption of the computer's registry, especially if you have recently installed a Lexmark printer as mentioned in the link in my last post. Hope you are soon sorted.
  25. Have you tried using system restore to take you back to a time before trouble struck? I would save all I could of importance (docs, pictures etc.) first to a DVD disc. The last, but drastic, step is (if you have the facility) save what you can and then restore your computer back to factory settings. If you do that you will have to spend some hours on updates and reinstalling programs such as your antivirus. Since writing the above I have found this link which may help and which I would try first http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324757
