  1. It could also be said that language is corrupted over time. Agnostic is a term that comes to mind. Look it up in dictionary after dictionary and it is clear that it indicates a belief that man can never know the absolute truth about certain things, particularly the existence of god(s). It really has nothing to do with a belief or disbelief in deities, only of man's ability to know the truth. Even though the definition is clear I see it used over and over as a point on the axis of theism between one being theist or atheist. It is not that point at all yet many fence sitters wish to label themselves as such because they are not theist but not honest enough to call themselves atheist. They want to make a word mean something that it was not created for. This blurring of language actually hurts our ability to be concise in the end.
  2. Actually they are. and A- and an- are simply 'not' modifiers. Atheist literally means not-theist. Theist is the root word. Without it there would be nothing to add a 'not' prefix to.
  3. False. Some people believe there is in fact one or more deities. They are theist. Some people believe there are no deities. They are not-theist, i.e. atheist. Some people lack belief either way. They are also atheist because they are not theist. It DOES NOT mean their lack of belief is a belief.
  4. That's kind of funny actually. The whole bible is 'he said he said', nothing but hearsay. It would not be allowed as evidence in a court of law and yet the religious want it treated as fact. Little do they realize that quite often faith is technically a mental disorder.

    The power of God.

Define 'god'! It's hard to debate the existence of something that is not exactly defined to begin with.
  6. As a libertarian I support the legalization of all drugs. There is no data to support the belief that regulation significantly effects the percentage of the population that use recreational drugs. Even with heroin I don't think legalizing it would cause people to go out and become heroin users. Legalization would prevent all of the crime users perpetrate in order to get their overpriced black market goods. I also believe abuse treatment would cost us far less than the drug war itself and would be much more effective at reducing drug abuse. Prohibition drives a sector of society we would be better off without.
  7. No it's not. You're lumping the whole group together as if they all have some common belief. They don't. The term atheist literally means not-theist, nothing more, nothing less. Theists have an affirmative belief that one or more deities exist and everyone that is not-theist is atheist. Some atheists actively believe that there are no deities and some simply doubt the existence of them for a lack of proof. They are a diverse group with nothing more in common than the fact that they do not have an affirmative belief in deities.
  8. You do not just become an atheist. If you begin to doubt the existence of deities then you can consider yourself not-theist which is really all the term atheist means to begin with. It is not an ideology or a belief system. It is simply those that lack an affirmative belief that deities exist.

  10. That's a great addition to their OpenCourseware program.
  11. Precisely! If intervention is warranted then let one of these two take a turn and spread the intervention burden to someone besides the U.S. this time...
  12. Two things come to mind here. First, you did not specify the load you want to power with the resulting AC supply. The output wattage capability will have to be considered in the DC side of the circuit. Sceond, I don't think you're going to find anyone here to do all the research for you and hand you a ready made list of parts. I'll give you some direction though. You'll need an oscillator to begin with, some type of multivibrator circuit running at 50HZ. There should be plenty of schematics available for this online. Something using a 555 timer chip would be easy to build. Next you'll need to produce the DC current needed to support the output side. Your DC circuit is going to need to have about 10 times the current producing capability as the output current requirement. I'd probably use an amplifier circuit with an old horizontal output transistor. They have good high wattage capability and they're fairly cheap and readily available. Finally you'll need a transformer to convert the output voltage from your vibrator circuit to 39V, suitably sized for the output power requirement. Alternatively you could look for a ready made inverter and just use a transformer to adjust the voltage. In your case I would consider selecting an alternate supply voltage like 6VDC or 12VDC since the inverters with those inputs will be far more common and therefor much cheaper than the few you might find available for 4.5VDC. Good luck....
  13. Off topic question here: Does the repeated demonstration of one's inability to spell, or even use a spell checker, cause you to be more likely to dismiss their points in the debate?
  14. My Deci-Lon is still quite serviceable because of the Ivorite construction, and it's a 1963 model. I'd like to see one of today's calculators last 50 years
  15. My K&E 68-1100 has never been refused at an exam. It never needs new batteries either.
  16. If all the Buddhists of the world believed there is a Lazyboy recliner orbiting Neptune would that make it true just because they believe it? Logic alone will not prove mysticism.
  17. No. They actually know a lot about economics. The problem is that we listen to the ones that spin the truth instead of those that tell the truth. This guy nailed it but no one listened
  18. No! Vacuum is the absence of a real thing, i.e. pressure.
  19. Kepler's laws come to mind...
  20. I think perhaps you are looking for mensuration, a branch of math dealing with measurements of geometric shapes.
  21. Democracy and sustainability are incompatible largely because the vast majority of the general public is greedy. A growing percentage of the public votes for those that promise the most gifts from the public treasury. The public never votes for those that promise to cut them off from unsustainable programs.
  22. Can't comment really on xcf files since I usually save to jpg, png or gif but I've been using GIMP across different platforms for years as my preferred photo editor because it does work so well across different platforms.
  23. Google 'octal prefixes'. There have been a number of them used to indicate octal notation. In reality you won't encounter it much any more. Its use is from the 8 bit computing era. Hex is now more practical with longer binary words.
  24. Here's some interesting video's:
  25. I do seem to recall that atoms are mostly empty space. Now if that isn't the case then perhaps you could share your atomic model with us.
