NASA's Space Shuttle Discovery took off at 2:38 Eastern Time on July 4th, 2006 after being delayed since July 1st. It was the first launch since last year, and the second since about 3 1/2 years when a large piece of fuel tank insolation foam brought down Space Shuttle Colombia. A slice of foam that was no bigger than a crust of bread fell off of Discovery's external fuel tank following the delay on July 2nd. Engineers said that the foam was not big enough to cause any problems. Source: Yahoo news

Happy b-day!

I am now against E85 because it isi less fuel efficient, and it costs more. It actually costs a dollar more than unleaded gasolene where I live.

For weeks now I have been trying to understand how this works. Thanks a lot for posting this, Martin. I rated this thread five starts. Everyone needs to read this thread. I would be very happy if a mod stickied this. I don't have anything else on the subject, but still thanks for posting.

Whoa! Thanks for sharing...

Oh! I forgot Goldfish, Coke, and Dunkaroos!

¡Traigamos esto nuevamente dentro de la discusión! Yes, I used a translator, but I'm learning Spanish. I could use this thread, or maybe a whole forum for help.

Offense taken. Why? Not because I think I have a great knowlege of ecology; I know I dont. I take offense because you misunderstood what I said. So, in case it was my fault, not yours, I will restate myself. There is no definition. As of right now, it is all about opinion. I believe it is ecological damage if, well, the ecosystem collapses. I probably didn't make myself clear when I talked about the food web. What I meant is that if the food web collapses, then that is ecological damage because the ecosystem is no longer self-sustained. It is true that everything relies on another. Sure, there are other ways to get food and such, but if every first-level consumer dies off, then the second and third level consumers would also die. This is what I mean. If I am not explaining myself clearly, please tell me what I need to say better. Thanks.

Something can hurt one thing, but help another. This would be damage to the thing that it hurts. If it hurts something to the point that it destroys the food web, then that would be ecological damage.

I don't understand how there could be a real definition of ecoligical damage. However, IMO, Skye was right on for the most part. I think that if the ecosystem is becoming unbalanced (i.e. the population of any organism is falling) and one factor or more is causing it to do so, then there is ecological damage. Edit: My 350th post! Woohoo! And also, did I use "i.e." correctly? Thanks.

I love the commercial where everyone is falling down and knocking another person over in the domino effect. At the end, one guy steps out of the way and everything stops.

I thought this was worthy of a thread: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060623/ap_on_he_me/bird_flu It turns out H5N1 Avian Flu mutated in a family in Indonesia. It passed through the family by human transmission. Thankfully, the mutation didn't last long. It's gone. It just goes to show you how close we could have been to a pandemic, and that we desperately need to prepare.

That's how I fealt when Mokele told me what I just told you. Jurassic Park is virtually impossible with the technology we have now, and the technology we will have for many years to come.

I doubt it. DNA usually degrades very quickly after death.

Awesome! I can't wait to see the documentary on Discovery!

Does the same affect happen with all caffeinated drinks, say Coca-Cola, or just coffee?

Another thing I would like is the Scientific American article from March 2005 about how humans may have stopped an ice age. It would be very helpful if anyone who has would scan it and post it here. Thanks a lot.

24 hour period to edit a post
herpguy replied to Genecks's topic in Suggestions, Comments and Support
I like Genecks idea. Sometimes I'll post something right before I go to bed and then think about what I posted for a few minutes until I fall asleep. Then, I'll realize that I said something wrong. So I'll wake up after getting a full night's sleep, and try to edit mo post. Unfortunately, I can't because of the time-limit. Even 10 hours would be fine with me, however it will make me very happy if you would raise it to 12. Thanks. -
This is a thread where you can post things you want in science. For example, you can give a description of a book you are looking for, and other users should recommend one. Other things you can post here that you want include magazines, videos, websites, chemicals, or anything that has to do with science. Remember: it has to be in science. I was going to suggest this as a much needed new forum, but I think a thread will work just fine. ============================= I'll start. I would like a very complex book on the climate change. It needs very small details, and a lot of them. If anyone knows of a book, or even an article, meeting these requirements please post them here. ============================= Remember to also post your wanteds here!

Wow, it was dark the whole day because of the severe thunderstorms. Happy international go skateboarding day everyone!
