  1. ! Moderator Note There’s not a well-defined amount, but it can’t be zero. You can be a legend in your own mind elsewhere. Don’t bring this up again.
  2. ! Moderator Note You’d better add some soon or this will be closed
  3. I suspect she will do well with people who are not white males. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how quickly the dems have backed Harris. Their history did not suggest this, and was a major reason I thought a change would be a bad idea. $100 million raised after Biden stepped aside is a pretty good indication of support https://www.cnbc.com/2024/07/22/live-updates-harris-democrats-biden-drops-out-trump-campaign.html I’ve seen Mark Kelly suggested as a possible running mate; the AZ gov would select a replacement so it wouldn’t be a lost senate seat
  4. The country as a whole, perhaps but I think iNow has a point that what’s important is the battleground states, and those aren’t as ready. Look at the legislation they’ve passed recently. Because polls aren’t driven by media narratives* and polls are never wrong *I literally just watched John Oliver point out how polling on fear of “migrant crime” spiked after media mentions of it exploded. This isn’t rocket science. (it’s a cognitive bias, leveraged by people who use propaganda)
  5. A nonwhite person won twice, and a woman got more votes than Trump in 2016. A lot of Trump voters have died since then (some thanks to Trump). The question is whether the GOP has been able to suppress more votes than that. But Dobbs is the big difference since then. People don’t like having rights/freedoms taken away. AndTrump being a felon.
  6. Oh, bullshit. None of this was inevitable. It was because of everybody dogpiling after the debate. If the press didn’t wet themselves at the thought of holding the GOP to the same standard and reported news instead of chasing clicks, and certain dems having a backbone instead of caving to megadonors (who freaked out because of the “news” stories) the path could have been quite different. I think the US is too homophobic and that would cost votes. I think Pete’s great and should be campaigning but that and his inexperience would be negatives.
  7. What are they, and how do you know this? Our rules require that material for discussion be posted. “read the paper” is not an acceptable response.
  8. From whom? The same anonymous sources that started this clusterf* or was it the donors who didn’t like the support that labor was getting? Always were, apparently. A “conscience clause” meant that they could vote for another candidate if they wanted to, but being pledged to Biden probably meant they wouldn’t have wanted to. We won’t know what would have happened if there had been no infighting, and instead there was a full-court press on all of Trump's failings, Dobbs, and the myriad other unpopular positions in project 2025. That’s where all the time and energy should go (and should have gone)
  9. Am reminded of “Be careful of what you wish for, for you will surely get it”

Sounds like a cyclotron, which exist, and do not do this. How much? Is there a calculation, or is this just a hand-wave?
  11. The doomsday vibe is the implication that there are no alternatives, and that we’ll be screwed by the loss of oil (“How will we ever lubricate things like door hinges, locks, motor bearings, guns, sewing machines and fishing reels whenever crude oil becomes available no more for man's use someday?)
  12. Oh come on. If you’re going to post these assertions it’s your obligation to back them up or clarify them.
  13. ! Moderator Note Ok. Thread closed; don’t bring it up again
  14. The core slowing makes the outer shell rotate faster, owing to conservation of angular momentum. We’ve seen this effect in recent years, but the scale of this is of order a millisecond a day.
  15. Use synthetic oils? Your doomsday framing is getting tiresome.
  16. At least you can quote it in a response. A screenshot doesn’t permit this, and is a tactic of people spamming their ideas, rather than engaging in sincere discussion. “Look at this stuff I posted elsewhere!” just isn’t taken that seriously. You can whine all you want about being treated unfairly, but it’s mostly noise to many of us.
  17. Everyone is subject to the same dynamic, do yes, it’s fair. Perhaps they were chastising you for primarily posting links and pictures, while Mordred is taking the time to post actual material, including a lot of math. So maybe it’s your sense of entitlement, that you don’t have to put in the same effort, even though you own the burden of proof here. Or maybe it’s something else.
  18. I was at a healthcare facility recently and nobody was masking.
  19. A lot of people are pretending that the pandemic is over (or never happened) but it’s still out there. I hope they get strict about masking in the White House.
  20. To the best of my knowledge iNow is correct. The board software can be configured in certain ways, but it’s not at the level of coding.
  21. I’m not seeing it. I can’t think of any examples, but since this happens so easily, surely there are some you could give.
  22. It’s also fear of manufactured threats. I read that the people who fear immigrants the most are people who live in areas with few immigrants. People fear the unknown, so they are a convenient scapegoat. Crime in a big city like New York is another; if you don’t live there, it’s an unknown, and if you only visit and have never been to a big city, it could be intimidating. But NYC is pretty safe, especially if you avoid known bad spots. US crime is down in general, but promoting the lie that crime is at record highs stokes fear. Minorities only got their job because of DEI and are actually incompetent, so you’re screwed. People with dark skin are thugs and going to rob you. The economy is horrible (never mind that wages are up and you have a job, where you didn't have one four years ago). Poor people are lazy, so they are not worthy of help. The list goes on and on.

I don’t know why people are surprised that Trump cheated death at his rally. Cheating is something he’s really good at.
