  1. It's just my assumption that when you're sitting in a pizzaria and have a reasonable expectation of being blown up by either a suicide bomber or a helicopter gunship you no longer are in civilization. Okay, let's iron something out here. Religious Jewish is a little redundant. I'm not a non-religious Christian just because I'm a white midwesterner who despises religion. I have no religion, or ex-Christian but nothing gets that biographical. If you are jewish you are jewish, if you are not jewish you are not jewish. If you live in Israel because you believe it to be the land God has promised you, you are Jewish. The population is made up of religious fundamentalists killing each other (due to belief that they're on God's land, which can not be denied), and bystanders. Get the bystanders out and let those left murder each other. Yep. Israel is obviously interested in being a monolithic and racist nation. Actually, I know enough Israeli-Americans to understand that their mentallity is the same as the idiots I grew up with, only they feel they actually have a holy land to fight for. But I do concede I know another Israeli-American that appeared in Playgirl in the mid-1980s and could care less about the whole mess. I used to cover Israel when I was still working, but I have gotten rusty since I've retired from the media. This is because I stopped caring. I used to care immensly until I realized that the entire thing is based in religion, so screw them. Just get the bystanders out. Israeli-Palestinian history is not the point of this thread. The point of this thread is to discuss the effect that the loss of Ariel Sharon will have. My answer was just to explain that the loss will have no effect because although Sharon is a mass murderer the population of the people in that area are there for religious (or (lack-of) economic) reasons that will never allow the violence to cease. I just wanted to weigh in because I'm thrilled that Sharon is on his deathbead, just as thrilled as a was when that two-faced psychopath Arafat was on his deathbed. I was simply celebrating the death of a world class asshole with my post and I don't want to waste any more time than I already have on Israel, so believe about me on this what you will ecoli (I used to be qualified to speak at length about this, but I stopped caring), I'm no longer participating. I'm just happy and I can't help it.
  2. Unfortunately, I don't feel that the loss of such a willing mass murderer will have much of an effect. It's a disappointment that we called ourselves his ally, and not just for the actions of his youth but also his policy in office. He may have just gained some sense recently because he knew he didn't have much time left, but who cares. It doesn't matter and nothing will. Israel has no hope of ever being civilized. The reason for this instability lies in the motivations of the people to even live in Israel. Take religion out of it, and who would want to live in Israel? You have to be a fundamentalist, and we all know how fundamentalists are. The only intelligent thing to do about Israel is to give up on it. Set up a fund to make sure that those who are in poverty can leave and start a new life elsewhere and let those who remain blow each other up in the name of God. Who are we to stop consenting adults from participating in madness? Just let the generations of Palestenians who have been victimized by Israeli power for their entire life a chance to leave if they want to first then let it go. Hell, make it a reality show and we'll all laugh. Thank God the Zionist movement didn't choose Argentina.
  3. What if bascule asked a question?
  4. Who says he isn't right now? What is Richard Pryor came back from the dead?
  5. DAMN IT! Now it's going to look lame when I do it. Now, don't you have to "do it" in order for a marriage to be legal? I'd like a video of that. Hopefully the dolphin got a prenup.
  6. They would never have started chainsmoking in a futile attempt to kill time before the release of the Playstation 3. What if the Bible was written as a series of pictures?

Who said anything about money? Sue them to make them recall their books from their shelves and correct their mistake. If it breaks them, it breaks them. If they don't have the capability to catch a mistake like that they should not be printing books. They're a publisher, and they won't do anything if you tell them about the mistake because I'm certain they already know about it. They need to take responsibility for it as do all publishers when they make these mistakes. Could you give me an example? Oh, you can't stop books and websites from popping up, but would it be a bad thing if their publishers were more responsible with their content? You guys have universal health care, so not everyone is tying to poison you regularly. Trying to stay healthy in America makes you blood thirsty after awhile. And while I do agree there are unnecessary lawsuits filed, you have to admit the Merck deserves what they get because they knew about Vioxx (although the FDA needs to be made competent again, but we're going to have to wait for 2009 for a chance at that). I wouldn't expect you getting millions of dollars from the publisher, nor do you deserve it, but you should sue them to force them to take responsibilty and protect others. This is misinformation over very basic chemistry presented as fact. Who knows what else they screwed up in that book? Was it written by Kevin Trudeau? If we don't protect the public from this, who will?

woelen, that is very basic chemistry, not the cutting edge of new research where it's expected refining will need to take place. Writing this book and claiming you know it is the same as medical malpractice. For it's readers who hadn't already known better that is their reality, and will cause a small domino effect contaminating even more people. This sort of thing happens too much. I'm sorry it is an incredible pet peeve of mine, but only because it's so destructive. Sue them and put these irresponsible bastards out of business.

What sort of action can be taken against books like this, I wonder. Can we sue them? Sue them for punitive damages for making society even more stupid. Does this thing have a disclaimer or anything explaining that it might not know what it is talking about? Does the book say anything else about chemistry, EvoN1020v?
  10. It says it's closed, am I missing something?
  11. I do travel at the speed of dark. That's why I'm 25 and live with my parents. What is everybody in the world moved to Texas (at the same time)?

EvoN1020v, write the publisher a letter. If that's what it says that is simply unnacceptable. If they don't know the difference between Helium and Hydrogen they have no business writing that book. God knows what else is in that book that is untrue. I can't stand this sort of things. Bust em, before it becomes the gospel that "Natural Cures" has become.
  13. It's all about the battery. We need to develop truly awesome batteries.
  14. Then I'd finally have a girlfriend that wasn't totally useless. What is US Presidents could serve more than 2 terms?
  15. Who's RyanJ? I'm just kidding. If you guys chicken out and don't give the SFN man of the year award to Dover, give it to Ryan J. We should give him more avatar space or something.
  16. There's a goat (a Boer) being raised by my sister's family who might have this. They're not aware of any of their other goats (totalling somewhere in the 30s) having it. They were explaining to me that the goat will run and just hit the ground like he faints, but he's still awake. I thought they may be overreacting and maybe he was just really clumsy for a goat, but that's interesting it came up here. It's been my experience that goats are sort of jumpy anyway. They can be very comfortable around me but just jump out of fright at random times over just basic stuff. It's like they freak out. I chalked it up as the massive amounts of wild marijuana they consume at the farm, but I wonder if they may have something going on neurologically as a species, like a goat schizofrenia. I heard that house cats have chemicals in their brain similar to LSD and that's why you catch a lot of them playing with imaginary friends. I have no idea if that's true or not, and I also wonder if there may be something like that in goats, and what purpose they serve as well. Freaking out keeps them in shape longer?
  17. It's sweet that you're 18 and appear to have dual citizenship. Now that your no longer a minor, you can simply run to the other country when you commit a crime. Register to vote and I'd do everything that you can do now legally and see how much less fun it is.
  18. Berkeley is the mecca of chemistry, and Harvard is also top notch. Truly elite schools.
  19. Political distancing, YAY! http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/23/politics/23santorum.html?ex=1292994000&en=1fcf2e4a5ed8dcf6&ei=5089&partner=rssyahoo&emc=rss
  20. You couldn't use the para stuff because it's not a carbon ring like benzene or cyclohexane. I bet the ring has a special name, and you can't call it cyclohexadiene because of that oxygen. I figure in my botched attempt at a name I implied it as cyclic because I said 1,5-oxy and not 1,5-dioxy. But that was just my best shot. I would like someone to explain this, it's a tough one.
  21. Hahahaha. Don't waste your time on that argument, it assumes many misperceptions about the thermodynamics. One part misinterprets entropy and another part comes to the conclusion that the energy required for evolution would cause the Earth to melt. I've heard it myself and it was so freaking misinformed and silly I don't want to go through it again. I do know that I have broken down this argument on more than one occasion because it's a canned argument (and an invalid one just on the basis that the ID side does not understand it's own position with it) So seriously, it's a waste of time but if you really want to know there are many websites out there that offer canned arguments for ID supporters. I ran into one earlier today that offers a 20 DVD set of debates full of canned arguments for the discount price of $127 down from $169 if you really have no self respect or place any value on your time.
  22. Generally, negative in chemical calculations means exothermic and spontaneous. CORRECTION: On my previous post on this thread I flubbed and said "2 of which are used in the 1s valence shell." The 1s shell is not the valence shell, the 5 electrons remaining are in the valence shell. Since there are 5 the 2s sublevel is full and the 2px 2py and 2pz have one each and energy must be added at this point to overcome repulsion. I'm sorry if my use of the word valence for 1s cause confusion.
  23. Yes, I found it useful to think of the whole thing as simply the product of volts and seconds. Just calculate the total volts you are going to use equal to volts that you're applying multiplied by seconds and adjust accordingly. You don't need much voltage to get results, you may have a power limitation, and it's safer (which is important when you're just starting). Okay, I think there may be a bit of confusion here. I think I can clear it up with a section of a paper I wrote. Hopefully it makes sense, but it is a little bit out of context (that the rest of the paper builds) and the superscript and subscript are made normal by posting.
  24. Good man, you're curious. These are a few small questions but they require huge answers to accurately answer, but I'm going to keep this simple. Everything, you and I included, are made of chemical compounds, and these compounds are composed of chemical elements. There are 92 recognized naturally occuring elements, examples include Oxygen, (which makes up 20% of the air we breath but which we need to live) Gold, Iron, Silver, and many others that may be a little obscure for you right now to explain. With that in mind, lets look at your questions. 8 elements make up most of the top layer of the earth. Oxygen, Silicon, Aluminum, Iron, Calcium, Potassium, and Magnesium. In fact about half of the Earth's crust and most rocks are silicates (silicon and oxygen compounds). You may not be aware of this but you are constantly immersed in fluid. It is everywhere. The air is a fluid, it's a gas. When this gas moves between pressure systems the wind blows. Generally, fire is the oxidation of a fuel souce. It's oxygen that makes things burn. Pure water is a hydrogen and oxygen compound. Sea water has salts in this compound. Cellulose, it's an organic (carbon based) compound that is synthesized by the tree as it grows.
