  1. Wild. I love stuff like this. Too bad more people don't go looking for it.
  2. I don't know if this has been mentioned, but I certainly hope so. That is not 0.999 = 1. It is 1 = 0.999(with an infinity of 9s) = 1. There is no application or anything else whatsoever where you'd have significant figures numbering beyond infinity, so anywhere you choose to end, the number will end up being 1. So 0.999(with an infinity of 9s) is 1, unless you need precision beyond an infinity of decimal places, where in which case, you're screwed.
  3. I am not a fan of bleach and how often it is used, but a few drops would totally do it there. Your regular tap water would probably kill the algae.
  4. If your poo looks like peanut butter perhaps you should go see a doctor.
  5. This is sticky because the recommended way for getting rid of a flag that's no longer fit to fly is by burning it. This is a very stupid nonissue. Most of the veterans I know find the concept of making flag burning illegal as offensive. Freedom is freedom, and rational people tend to be able to tell the difference. This regimes moves for more leniency on law enforcement, attempts to legislate the bedroom, and limitations on freedom of speech, and now brewing action against freedom of the press should trouble even their most mindless of hack supporters.
  6. What is there to remember? Judicial decisions should not be a favor to anyone. If that's what you're looking for, perhaps you should reassess your own understanding of the purpose of the judiciary in the 3-branch system. Some things exist outside the sandbox Pangloss.
  7. Cereal (almost anything but the sugary kids kinds), DiGornio pizzas, peanut butter and pickle relish sandwiches, peanut butter and graham crackers, salmon.
  8. Not only that, he's committing fraud and is a vigilante. Doesn't he also fall under the definition of "terrorist"?
  9. I can't wait for more "activist judges" allegations.
  10. It really bothers me how much you have to dig to find this sort of thing. I mean, this is the largest object known to man, and I didn't see it anywhere mainstream.
  11. I think the giant gas ball is methanol, which I find odd.
  12. The Burger King ad on the Super Bowl. It started out stupid, and ended up amazing. Very well coreographed, executed, and it made me very hungry (if you know what I mean).
  13. I'd teach it in terms of translation, I've had success tutoring college algebra this way. You just constantly cycle through the meanings of different notation until the student absolutely knows what it means, and once they can translate, they have power to see the numbers and what they're doing. I'd just simply translate notation into the context of practical application. All the tests would be word problems the student would have to set up, that way they get a sense for practical application and importance. Math is a language, I think it's best served to teach it as such.
  14. The Politically Incorrect Guide to Science is a misnomer, since politics is the only reason why the science he promotes gets listened to. Not only is his book poorly titled, I'm not sure he's even read his own book. Mooney did very well, but he was perhaps a bit too nice.
  15. The tribes are actually they're own "nation," and any of the indian reservations I've been too I wouldn't exactly call swank. Most indians apparently live in poverty as well. Leave them alone.
  16. I need to go buy a dictionary before I can participate in the poll.
  17. http://www.jb.man.ac.uk/news/cloud/colour_w3.jpg There's a new pic.
  18. AHHHH! I was looking for this video. I should have just came here. Is this the only one of it's kind you're aware of, Martin?
  19. Thanks for showing me arxiv Martin. My questions now are 1) Where is it going? 2) How did it get moving so fast? Any off chance that it is orbiting an even larger object?
  20. I've been thinking about it, and I don't believe it. Chimps are pretty close-knit. And I think they'd know. There's a chimp at the zoo here that's lost all of his hair and they still treat him like they always have. I'm still looking though.
  21. Pic at the URL. http://www.universetoday.com/2006/06/12/gigantic-ball-of-fire-discovered/ Wow! I guess this thing is so massive it may be seeding galaxies by the mass that it loses as it travels. Thankfully... This blew me away when I heard it. Wow!
  22. You can also hear a lot of exchanges on NASA TV, that you can find via satellite and some cable and also streaming live on NASA.gov. When the last astronaut freaked out on mission control over the tiles, it went over live, so it's pretty uncut. NASA TV also shows ISS Mission coverage every day. It's good tv, I like it. I'm down with NASA. The next launch is scheduled for: July 1.
  23. Ok? I didn't watch it, honestly it's the first I've heard of it, and I'm a sports fan.
  24. Hey, Bettina. Would you go out on a date with me? I promise to make you laugh. What works best for me is, "Who the Hell are you?"
  25. Creepy man. Pretty creepy.
