  1. Women have a stronger immune system than do men. Men have a stronger ability to metabolize/detoxify toxins than do women (even pound per pound). Women's stronger immune systems aid them during their reproductive years (and probably through their child rearing years as well as with socializing in general). At least some of early human technology/engineering involving chemicals/materials (mining/smelting metals, leather tanning, etc), which suggests that men more than women are suitable to working in ancient "engineering". And ancient technology was more object-oriented work rather than people-oriented work, and it involved more strength (mining metals, blacksmithing, etc). This suggests evolutionary interplay (both ways) between these gender-related tasks and this biological dichotomy.
  2. Obviously, your program needs to determine a couple of facts before the "For X = 1 to ???" statement. I was always told that it's good practice to null the new string --- so you know how to do that, right? As for the "???", how do you determine the number of times you need to run through this loop? Well, you already have it, so that's solved. And so are all the other actions like this one. You "have" them already ... they're stuck in strings. But you want to isolate them and then *DO* something with them. What do you want to do with them? Think of a computer as a really stupid person (which they are), where you must tell it every simple step of a procedure that you want it to do.
  3. One method would involve the polar coordinate system and integrating within that system, as well as an algebraic equation that defines the shape of the blob's perimeter. Quite frankly, I've forgotten how to integrate in the polar coordinate system. Another method would involve the polar coordinate system and integrating/summing within that system, although the shape of the blob would be graphically represented and measured. As a guess, it would probably provide a more accurate answer by having the polar coordinate system originating near the blob's geometric center, which can be found using this simple method. Next, draw radials emanating from the center of mass with equal angular proportions (for example, 20° or 10° ... or even 1° if the person feels ambitious). These "pie slices" of the blob will be converted into isosceles triangles, which require the two simple dimensions of height and base to find their areas. The height can be the average of the distance along its two radials, or the distance from the center of mass down the triangle to the edge of the blob midway between the two radials. The base can be measured directly from the diagram, or it can be calculated as a function of the angle formed by the two radials and the triangle's height (this last method seems more accurate, especially with very thin slices). Having done this for all the "pie slices", each slice's area can be calculated. Then all the areas for the pie slices can be summed together to form the area of the blob. [*]If it's all the same to you, questionposter, I'd suggest you use a planimeter to find the area of blob. It's much more mysterious than Newton's infinite triangle method.
  4. I'm guessing that this method is similar to the trapezoidal method of finding the area under a curve, but it forms triangles (like pie slices) instead of trapezoids. The method can find the area of a circle, and thus, the value of pi.
  5. Isn't the answer quite obvious — DNA, RNA and amino acids contain/require carbon, thus organisms at any point in history require an external source of carbon. Even viruses and prions must contain/obtain carbon.

    Their different sizes reminds me of crystals. Descriptively, they seem more octahedral (8-sided, "double pyramid") than square (6-sided), so googling octahedral virus might help you find your answer.

Most Wikipedia articles are logical, orderly and accurate and contain links to (outside) references that help readers to confirm the accuracy of the articles and for further reading or more in-depth study.
  9. Maybe an "amateur" arachnologist. Jumping spiders are known as the "teddy bears" of spiderdom. I have kept several of them for study, and they make inexpensive, easy-to-manage, and interesting "pets". They display a variety of behavior that indicates a relatively high intelligence for such small creatures.

  11. Look into jumping spiders. They show quite the array of intelligent behavior, even the small (≤3 mm) ones, much more intelligent than their webcasting cousins. I studied them for years. Fascinating.
  12. Something less than general anesthesia is possible depending on the surgery itself, but that protocol may require general anesthesia. For example, the doctor could administer a sedative intravenously followed by local anesthesia, and the patient would remain awake yet comfortable and pain-free. Talk to the doctor about this, and ask around about what other doctors are willing to do. Some doctors may prefer the above method (for legal/malpractice reasons, if nothing else). The patient might use NSAIDs (or nothing) afterwards in recovering from the operation. For example, I walked out of the hospital 15 minutes after waking up from hernia surgery and took only acetaminophen for the first 24 hours, whereas the doctor/staff wanted me to stay longer and to administer opiates.

  19. Highlight it and designate its color as white. It becomes visible when you highlight the text. Highlight the next line to see an example of this. You're really whitening the text, not blackening it. Because the background color isn't a perfect white, you can see something, but probably can't read it.

    Hydrogen gas

    I vote for separating water into hydrogen and oxygen by electrolysis. WARNING: Performed only under proper adult supervision. You can use just about any dime-a-dozen charger for battery-operated devices (~3 to ~12 volts). Snip off the connector, separate a few inches of the wires, solder/attach an electrode to the end of each wire, place electrodes in a basin of salt water, cover each electrode with an inverted, water-filled plastic bottle (no larger than a small pill bottle), plug in the recharger, and watch the bubbles of hydrogen and oxygen rise from the electrodes and fill the bottles (probably takes the better part of a day). How to determine which bottle contains hydrogen? Carefully lift a bottle out of the water while keeping it inverted (because even in air, hydrogen is lighter and will rise), slowly place it over a small hole on a board, and place a lit match under the hole. Whichever bottle pops into the air (about a foot or two), contained the hydrogen. Perform the electrolysis again. Store this specimen in its capture bottle with a cap attached; however, keep it inverted in your collection, otherwise the hydrogen might leak through the cap/bottle junction.
  21. First, a 0.849 g tablet cannot contain 10 g of riboflavin. The RDA for riboflavin is about 1 mg, so maybe it should be 10 mg of riboflavin in each pill (which is the typical level in multi-vitamin B stress tablets). So, you took 0.201 g of 0.849 g of a pill that has some amount of riboflavin in it. From here, you can calculate the mass you obtained, and then complete the concentration equation above.
  22. The word "fruit" literally means to use, to enjoy, so there's our ancestors' understanding of the enticement to animals. In addition to the fruits mentioned above that travel through an animal's digestive track, some fruits entice animals who then carry them away to eat elsewhere; however, the seed itself may be large and/or hard to eat (peaches, cherries, etc) or are too inedible to eat (cashews (which are bitter when its fruit is ripe and sweet), etc), and so, the animals discard them (which allows them to sprout). I'm guessing that, for tree nuts (pecans, walnuts, etc), the enticement is in the meat of the nut itself, but that the animals either forget where they hid them or found the shell too difficult to crack open, and thus, some survive to sprout when the shells rots.

  24. Okay, I hope that by "ive got the practical components up to standard" you have built a breakout box that the instructor has approved and is safe to use. Next, I don't see how the electricity can affect the computer's operation (unless the power supplied is at partial voltage). What may happen is that the operation of the computer, under the various circumstances you describe, will affect the current draw from the wall. So, if I can remember this type of science correctly, you need to form a hypothesis, develop/explain the experiment's plan, perform the experiment, and compare the results to the hypothesis. You could theorize that the number of background programs will cause the computer to work "harder" -- that is, consume more electrical power (and because the voltage remains constant, it''s the current that will vary, which is why the instructor told you to measure it). Computers can't really multitask, instead they spend some time running each program (they just do it so fast, it seems like they're multitasking). More programs means more CPU usage (that is, less idle time for the CPU). Also, if all the programs and associated data combined are bigger than the available RAM, the computer must swap programs and data between your hard drive and the RAM -- like an office worker having limited desk space and shuffling books and paperwork between the desk and shelves -- and that also consumes energy and slows down the operations (like image refresh rate).
