  1. No the record is 83431 digits. http://news.inq7.net/breaking/index.php?index=3&story_id=42142
  2. It shouldn't make any difference. Most kettles or anything else that you may use will add heat to its contents regardless of how much water you have in it. If you already have one serving of water at it's boiling point then add a serving of water at room temperature, the time you will have to wait will be the time required to deliver enough heat to heat the mixture to the boiling point. This would be the same amount of heat required to bring to a boil the single serving. Therefore it will take the same amount of time either way.
  3. Although i suspect that DV8 suggested has the right answer, another possibility is that the magnet is not rotating around its exact centre.
  4. I think that Big Foot is fiction. Finding a new species of animal is very rare now. "A new monkey species has been found in the highland forests of Tanzania. ... is the first new African monkey to be found in more than 20 years." http://www.newscientist.com/channel/earth/dn7399 It is resonable to expect that if bigfoot exists, then it would have been found by biologists.
  5. Even if our DNA is nearly the same as 70 000 years ago, these differences may be significant. The level of intelligence may be affected by these small differences. The mind has evolved in the last thousand years and is still evolving. "New variants of two genes that control brain development have swept through much of the human population during the last several thousand years, biologists have found." 6. For coffee, most people will put a little cold milk in a lot of hot coffee. Under these circumstances, after 5 minutes, the coffee will be warmer if the milk is added as soon as possible. This is because the higher the temperature of the cofee the faster it cools down. Mixing of the milk will cause a instantaneous drop in the temperature of the coffee. The coffee will then cool down slower than if no milk was added. This will be the answer if you put a little cold milk in your coffee. If you put lots of cold milk in your coffee (ending up with more milk than cofee), then (a) would be the answer.
  7. One interesting and relevant fact is that one experiment has shown that dreams sequences occur at about the same speed as in real life. Electrodes were placed on the heads of mice as they ran a maze and their brain activity was measured. Their brain activity was also measured while they were asleep and the reseachers could tell that the mice were dreaming about running in the maze. They could even tell that in which part of the maze the mice were and that time passed at about the same rate in their dreams. For more info see http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2001/dreams-0131.html
  8. Thinking of the atoms as points is not appropriate in this case. The atom will be spread out in all directions as a wave. This can interfere with a wave from another atom which is also spread out. It is not until atoms are detected (collapse of the wave function) that you can treat them as points again. The probability of detecting the atoms will be larger where there is at a position where the waves interfere constuctively and the probability will be zero where they interfere destructively. The interference will prevent the emission of the atoms in certain directions and enhance the emission in other directions.
  9. If you had a source of light and wanted to elliminate it, you can place another light source near it and cause destructive interference at any arbitrary position. All you would have to do is place it somewhere and make certain that it had the right phase to cancel out the light from the original source. However you can't cause destructive interference everywhere at once. There will always be somewhere where there is constructive interference. That is where the energy goes. The same thing happens for particles. You can't have destructive interference everywhere.
  10. Sounds like the plan will work. The main difficulty will be making certain that there is no resulting torque on the helicopter when it is hovering. I anticipate a lot of trial and error before you get it right. Sounds like fun. Good luck with it.
  11. The plan might work if you can get enough lift from your motor and propellor. I suggest that before you build your helicopter that you measure the lift that you can produce. This can be done by fixing the motor and propellor to a set of scales and measuring the weight with and without the propellor turning. Hopefully the lift will be equal or greater than the weight of the motor otherwise it will not work.
  12. Electrons and positrons do not always produce two photons when they annihilate. Sometimes they produce 3 photons. The number of photons will depend on the total spin of the electron/positron pair. They will produce 2 photons if their total angular momentum is 0, and 3 photons if the total angular momentum is 1. I know less about proton/antiproton decay but a quick search revealed that "when antiprotons annihilate with protons, the annihilation process does NOT produce gammarays immediately. Instead, the products of the annihilation are from three to seven particles called pions." (from http://www.transorbital.net/Library/D001_S01.html) . I believe that these pions then decay, each emitting 2 photons. Therefore the result of antiproton decay is several photons.
