  1. How are metals put in their order on the order of metal activiyt? From what I can infer, it is how violently they react in a substance but I am not sure.
  2. Ok that clarifies things a bit. http://www.chemos.co.uk/Reactivity.htm - This is the link that I was using for reference. Obviuosly, it labels caesium as the most reactive metal, which budullewraagh said was wrong. What I did in my experiments was measured out 25 ml of acid into a petri dish. Then I cut relatively similar masses of metals (Mg, Cu, Fe, Pb, Al, and Zn) and let them react fully. Then I measured the volume of the acid left. I was just wondering how I would make my own list of metal activity.
  3. I was just wondering why these certain metals only did this in these acids. I retested copper in sulfuric acid, and it did not turn blue like it did with nitric. Another question that I have: How are metals on the reactivity series classified that way? i.e. - Are they determined how reactive they are by how many sloutions they react with, how quickly they react, how much they react, or what?
  4. Sorry, I forgot to mention that the iron in 6 molar sulfuric acid (did not test 3 molar) does to brown, but not to the same degree of darkness as 3 molar nitric. The copper did nothing in sulfuric, but I will retest to verify.
  5. I have recently been experimenting with different metal reactions with different acids. Some interesting things that I have noticed: 1.)Using 3 molar nitric acid and a small mass of iron, I got a reaction which produced a dark brown substance was produced adn the iron was not completely dissolved. 2.)Also using 3 molar nitric acid and about the same mass of copper, the solution turned a light blue. None of these things happened when I used sulphuric or hydrochloric acid. Feel free to explain why these things occur or comment on them.
  6. Ok thanks. It helps a lot.
  7. What molarity or acid would constitute a weak acid in this equation? I have 3 and 6 mol nitric, hydrochloric, and sulfuric and I may need to reduce the molarity in some cases to get the desired pH.
  8. Does anyone know a conversion of the molarity of an acid to it's pH or a place where there is a table with this information?
  9. I'm willing to go pretty much anywhere in the US for college. As for what I want from colleges, I just want good academic schools. I do pretty well in school. My GPA is about 4.1. The only problem is I don't do well on standardized tests. A lot of pressure and the fact that they are timed kills me on them. I play soccer and work in the summer and belong to a few clubs in and out of school. There, a little about me. Some college suggestions maybe?
  10. I'm interested in either majoring in chemisrty or premed and I've read here that undergrad degrees don't matter but I still would like to get off to a good start. Also, if I were only to get a BS in chemistry, would there be a big difference in the job opportunities than if I had a masters or better?
  11. Yeah it probably would be easier and safer to just buy sodium. However, I am probably not old enough to buy it from any store on the internet seeing as how I'm only 17 and there is no way in hell that my parents would buy me the stuff. I've already been caught with 12 molar hydrochloric acid and concentrated sulfuric acid. It's just lucky that my dad didn't know that the stuff was dangerous!
  12. ^^^^ Some more interesting topics to think about. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Let me just clarify the procedures to the enzyme reaction experiment: 1.Pick enzymes to test the reaction rates of. 2.Pick different varibles to use (mainly temp. and PH) 3.Do different experiments with the variables ex: Heat with PH 10, Heat with PH 4, Cold with PH 10, etc. 4.Time how long the reactions take. 5.Analyze the results and decide which conditions provide for the quickest and slowest reaction rates. Does all of this sound about right? Please provide me with any guidance or suggestions as it is clear you know what you are doing with this project. Thanks a lot.
  13. I don't see why I couldn't get them from school. That's where I will probably have to get some of the acids and bases for the experiment. If I run into any problems or questions I will just ask you. Thanks a lot.
  14. I just wanted some different enzymes I could use for the experiment and where i could easily find them.
  15. I was searching the forums and I came across a post that you did ryan about testing reaction rates with enzymes. I kinda like that idea. Could you post some more info on it?
  16. I can't remember where it was, but somewhere i read that it was possible to make sodium. The process had something to do with salt, some kind of liquid, and an electrical current. Does this sound familiar or like it would work to anybody?
  17. When you say "analyze the catalyts formed by transition metals," how exactly would you do that? I also like some of the stuff I saw on the magnet page that I might consider.
  18. I really just love working with chemicals. Anything involving chemicals would be good.
  19. I am in desperate need of a good science fair project. I can't think of anything that would be good to do. I really would like to do a chemistry project but I can do anything scientifically, mathematically, or phsycologically related. Any ideas or comments would be greatly appreciated.
