  1. Bascule - again - how is this germane to the topic under discussion? That topic, as I understand it, is about the tapping of telephone conversations between suspected terrorists and people inside the US. Your attempted diversion to conditions at gitmo and the legalities of incarcerating suspected terrorists there, seems to be a strawman argument, which I am givin to understand is a no no on this forum. I will, however, point out that it has not been legally established that the chief executive does not have the power to order these people detained under the current circumstances, that being a time of war. Now, if you will, let us get back to the merits of tapping telephone conversations.
  2. And how is an accusation of false imprisonment relevant to the topic under discussion? That being the tapping of phone calls comming into the country from suspected terrorists?
  3. I got this in my email this morning, thought it was cute and want to share it with you guys N gals...... ********** Subject: Mid-term in Chemistry The following is an actual question given on a University of Washington Chemistry mid-term. The answer by one student was so "profound" that the professor shared it with colleagues, via the Internet, which is, of course, why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well. Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)? Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant. One student, however, wrote the following: First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different religions that exist in the world today. Most of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there is more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are added. This gives two possibilities: 1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose. 2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over. So which is it? If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa during my Freshman year that, "it will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with you, and take into account the fact that I slept with her last night, then number 2 must be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and has already frozen over. The corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen over, it follows that it is not accepting any more souls and is therefore, extinct...leaving only Heaven thereby proving the existence of a divine being which explains why, last night, Teresa kept shouting "Oh my God." THIS STUDENT RECEIVED THE ONLY "A
  4. I ain't that kind if hillbilly. I eat the same food as the rest of America does - pizza and beer. You boys have pizza and beer in England?
  5. Neither can I. Perhaps if I was 5000 miles closer, I would pop over for a look. Us hillbillys are good with engines.
  6. What you discribe is an engine that it "running too lean" meaning that it is getting too much air for the amount of fuel it is getting. If there is a fuel/air mix screw adjustment, try monkeying around with it when the engine is running. Usually by turning the screw one way ot the other, you will hear the engine "smooth out" and run a little faster. Also, check and be sure that the gasket under the carb is not leaking allowing air to be drawn into the engine from under the carb.
  7. Why not have a mechanic look at the automatic choke on the engine? By the sound of your OP, that is whay ails your car.
  8. This discussion reminds me of a book I read once. I think it was called "Republic" or something like that, writtin by some old Greek.

    Define time

Then it should be quite easy to define. So.......... Exactly what is time?
  11. entwined

    Define time

How do we know that time exists? As far as I know, it has no physical properties, no weight, no width, length or depth, yet we seem to think we can measure it and some even think we can alter it, so how would you define time?

  13. Are you familiar with the Coriolis effect?
  14. If American citizens are spared a death by terrorism, I think it (lying to terrorists) can be justified without ceding any moral equivelency.
  15. Sorry about the confusion - I was making an effort to be sarcastic' date=' as I [i']thought[/i] you were.
  16. I'm sorry but I heard it quite differently. I heard him say that as the Iraqi government becomes more self sustaining and the Iraqi military becomes more able to repel the insurgency on their own, that the US would withdraw from Iraq. Isn't that a plan?
