Fuel cell has a higher efficiency because fuel cell is not a heat engine -- there is not temperature limitation on the cycle efficiency.

In case you have any doubts and like engineering, I would suggest that you start with mechanical engineering and major in energy conversion systems (power and propulsion).
What you learn there, it can be easily expanded for the purpose of aerospace, chemical engineering etc.
In general, engineering is a good profession and will keep you thinking all the time.

I would just like to add that eventually both wind and solar should be coupled together and have another source for energy storage attached to them. In a long run, the energy surplus should be used to generate hydrogen as an energy carrier and/or fuel.
In an ideal scenario, through laptops having wireless connection to the Internet and being power by hydrogen fed fuel cell applications could prove a viable commercial application -- revenue could be generated in such applications and such funds could be used to help other promising technolgies become comercial in the near future ...
This is an ideal scenario but it does somehow make sense when bringing promising technologies into the power generation arena ...

What is nice about pressurized plasma is that when expanding across a magnetic field it can generate DC electricity and the expanding plasma gas gets slowed down or be used for the propulsion puropse where the expanding plasma gas gets accelerated ...
