  1. when detonating a nuclear weapon, please make sure your critical mass is a nice shape, or it won't explode. melting and expansion caused by heat will be detrimental.
  2. ringworm, despite the name, is a fungus and so is atheletes foot.
  3. what is the solid angle in steradians that it emits at?
  4. I think it seems YT and I pretty much agree. excellent start post by the way
  5. probably a combination of things really. I would posit that the pattern in the thinnest bit of the oil is related to the grinding of the pan, So the junk, which I ammume would have some water in it (and hence would separate from the fat) is more likely to be deposited in the dips. This would start the seed for the rest of the pattern to form, since the fat would cause all the hydrous elements of the fat to clump together. the effects of the original seeding would get weaker and weaker the further from the shallow oil you get. I would suggest trying to tilt the pan at different angles to see if the rate of pattern change from the thin bit changes, and also different depths of oil too. with shallow oil you will probably get a very fine pattern all over the pan
  6. which is your favourite parasite? mine would probablz be Thisbe Irena, a caterpillar that uses pheromones and other structures to take over ant colonies.
  7. oh just let the economy deal with it. The less poor people there are, the less reproduction there will be.
  8. as has been pointed out, that idea is called Zeno's paradox. However I think it needs to be pointed out, that with regards to radioactive decay, it is only an approximation (albeit a fairly good one) for a couple of reasons. Firstly for detection purposes, once the levels of a material drop far enough, they will be drowned out by the background radiation. This is why things like carbon dating only work back to a few tens of thousands of years. Secondly, atoms only exist in integer quantities. You can't have a fraction of a uranium atom. once a uranium atom decays, it is not uranium anymore.
  9. you aren't dreaming.
  10. isn't the blue whale the largest animal ever?
  11. it is not so much density that is the issue here, the point is that there is a concentrated area of positive charge in there, rather than a distribution of positive and negative charges as in the plum pudding model.
  12. same effect, conservation of angular momentum
  13. CERN and so on might be a good example too. most of these would not be photons though, mostly the strong and weak force carriers
  14. snells law works for all waves. but of course it depends on the properties of the medium in order to get your wavefunction correct. for example, if you set up waves in a shallow pool of water, and then put a block of glass (or anything else) in the water, you can see the wavelength change over the glass block.
  15. another neat thing about gyroscopes, though you need quite a heavy one for this. get it spinning with the wheel parallel to the floor, and then sit on a swivelly chair. now turn it over, and you will start spinning in order to conserve angular momentum.
  16. I know often online petitions aren't worth the paper they are written on, however I would like you to consider signing this, and passing the URL around for other people to sign too. http://www.petitiononline.com/gasci04/ basically the premise is that the Georgian education department is removing all mention of things like evolution and plate tectonics from their syllabus. This will be both bad for Georgia, since less people will take them seriously if their science education is poor, and ultimately everyone else, since (warning: slippery slope ahead) if this makes a precedent, then more states in the US, and possibly countries abroad (though less likely) could follow suit.
  17. I was thinking that it might be a nice idea to invite prominent scientists to post here, and perhaps have a short quasi-lecture format, or a question and answer format. This will be dependent on their available time however and of course their willingness to do so. Also I think it would be important to try and ensure that there is an audience for them too, so that there are few questions. I propose that when a guest is to be invited, first we discuss who we want to invite, and then approach them. The format would be then that either we let them duscuss a topic of their choosing, or suggest one, which they post on a moderated forum, and then have a moderated question and answer session, where the questions are posted to the moderator, and then the moderator posts them on the forum. The reason I suggest this, is that it ensures that the Questions are of a good standard, and it avoids them being bombarded with spam questions (perhaps we might need to limit private messaging to them too) how many people would be interested in this sort of thing?
  18. because all light headed in your direction from across the entire universe would arrive at your eye constantly. in short, you would get a bad case of sunburn, and would need a good pair of ray-bans.

    help needed!

don't you need something else for the pH? I reckon you add a load of acid to it and then boil it for three weeks.
  20. because that is the way it is. (note it does not accelerate at the same rate, it does not accelerate at all, but it's velocity is still 3x10^8m/s)
  21. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law?
  22. Schrodingers cat is not an entanglement experiment of that type.
  23. what neutral field?
  24. funny as in "odd" not funny "haha"
