  1. how does this relate to the US purposely bombing civilians though? you're not seriously saying that they are embarking on a sort of political genocide, where everyone with an opposing view is targetted with a cluster bomb attack?
  2. you're saying photons emit gravitons?
  3. useless science, is infinitely more useful than useless art. I would much rather give money to someone who wants to look at ants, than someone who wants to appreciates squares on a wall.
  4. is this honestly your point of view? I am astounded if it is. evidence of executions please. I don't just want to hear any old propaganda. they'd move? where to? since it is clear that trying to escape where they are (eg. basra) would only result in them getting shot. or perhaps their families would get shot. or perhaps if they refuse to do something that they are told they will get shot. perhaps attempting to cross through the medina division (while they were there) would have resulted in them getting shot. The fedayeen are very nasty people: do not underestimate the power of having a gun to your head in getting you to do things that you don't really want to do.
  5. possibly, though I would say unlikely. there would be nothing to gain from it.
  6. the proper experiment goes: cat is in a box with a very small radioactive source, detector and bottle of poison. the small source is so small it is of a quantum scale and can exist in a superposition of decayed, and not decayed. should it decay, the detector can tell this, releases the poison and kills the cat. since the source can exist in a superposition, so the experiment goes, so can the cat. As blike says, it is an experiment to demonstrate the absurdity of applying quantum logic to the classical world.
  7. homework help is different from asking us to do you homework. you will have the equations and information somewhere. use them.
  8. I looked at zetatalk.com at some of the "pictures" of planet x, or whatever. rather bizarrely, one was of a fuzzs grey globe, and the next was of a bright red tail-like line. personally I think people were messing round with photoshop.
  9. it depends on how it is treated I suppose. look for suppliers and ask them, they will tell you far more accurately than anyone here ever could.
  10. I know that energy and mass are equivalent, but seriously, photons having mass? nope. let us assume that they do for a second: even if it wasn't rest mass, it is still mass, and hence would have to be plugged into the lorentz transforms in SR (unless you can think of a cunning reason why not). this would create a quandry, since exactly the same equation that demonstrates that only massless things can travel at c, would simultaneously demonstrate that light has mass, and therefore can't travel at c.
  11. indeed, ones opinion shouldn't really be swung either way by the media until you have got sufficient independent evidence to support a given case. for example in matzi's case above, there could be reasons for civilian housing getting hit by cluster bombs, such as them being full of soldiers (it is well known that they are hiding out in schools and hospitals, knowing that the US and UK will not strike them) or even a mistake.
  12. your argument here is fundamentally flawed... it is not the house that is the target, it is the troops that are using them. I see no point in discussing your standpoint without sufficient information to judge whether the alleged attack was a valid one or not.
  13. heh, I can see how this works: man becomes convinced that his wife is satan, so he continues to spit at her until she leaves him. man uses this as proof that wife was satan..... It is kind of like "vampires can be killed by a steak through the heart" while forgetting to point out that "normal people can be killed with a steak through the heart"
  14. I am not talking in an experimental or measured capacity, I haven't even heard of it in a theoretical capacity. Essentially, as I have heard, gravity is only present in massive bodies (bodies with mass) light doesn't have mass.
  15. I don't think this is the case, nor have I ever heard of the big bang occuring in several places (expect for "everywhere" since it created space/time too) Dark matter is supposed to be supersymmetrical versions of ordinary matter, such as WIMPs (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles) and configurations of normal matter aka MACHOs (MAssive Compact Halo Objects)
  16. everything beyond (before) the cosmic microwave background is opaque, and so you can`t see it. the CMB is itself an important physical event, which occured when matter and energy decoupled, and thermal equilibrium was lost (you can tell because the CMB is blackbody radiation - this only occurs in objects in thermal equilibrium) This is why so much attention is paid to the CMB. furthermore, it comes from everywhere in the universe.
  17. the matter forming these jets never crosses the event horizon, and is actually ejected by magnetic fields forming at the poles of a spinning black hole. Hence it never has to travel superluminally. The jets are quite tightly focussed, and so as rightly said, you can only see them when they are pointed in your direction, like a lighthouse or pulsar. the evaporation of a black hole is just particles, and hypothetically (I don't know if there is a proper model behind this) caused by particle antiparticle pairs forming near the event horizon, with one escaping and one falling in.
  18. now light having a gravitational effect is something I have never heard of.
  19. heh, I bet he dies of hypothermia and never lives to see us laughing at him.
  20. I seem to be here still. has anyone spoken with adam?
  21. oh I know that the two are equivalent, and that you end up with energy left over, but my point relates mostly to effect, since mass has effects that energy doesn't, namely gravity. In effect, you have two positive gravity sources, adding together to equal no gravity source at all.
  22. the US and UK never denied that there would be civilian casualties. Indeed, if the Iraqi forces had done what was asked i.e. just let us take out your leadership and we will let the rest of you live... then there would probably have been far less killing. however, the people who set up places like this aren't going to just give up.

    Teh Box

my mate has one in a wooden box... I forget what the spec of his box is now.
  24. ace... I am jammin up the groups server right now.
  25. when an electron and positron (or any particle/antiparticle) collide, you just end up left with energy, in essence, mass has disappeared, since both have positive mass. this is a bit confusing really, since all the other quantum numbers are conserved, such as charge, spin, lepton number etc... so why does, in the case of mass 1 + 1 = 0 ?
