  1. I believe it was John Watson who first discovered that if you pair two things together you could condition the mind to associate the one thing with the other. Example in Dogs: You ring a bell every time you feed a dog. Eventually all you need to do is ring the bell and the dog will automatically think he's about to get food and his mouth will start to produce extra saliva. Example in Humans and Advertisements: You pair cigarettes with beautiful women/men, nice cars and big houses and eventually the bombardment of advertisements will condition the mind to associate these things together.
  2. A 100 years ago, how do you think you got your food? Did you go up to the deer and ask him for it? And the desire to taste something signals the same pleasure centers of the brain that sex does...
  3. haha reverse, your quite the character!
  4. Teach me how to do this.....wow
  5. Conflicting inner drives eventually lead us to what Brener described as compromised formations. Basically if you believe that our 2 biggest motives or drives as humans are aggression and sex then you will begin to see why nearly everything you read about, see on TV or hear about on the radio/music is somehow geared towards these to innate drives. So marketing simply needs to tempt people with either of these motives and people will unconsciously influence their conscious into feeling like they want or need a particular product or service. Good old fashion brain wash Notice how no advertisements are representing the norm but instead representing some sort of fantasy that most of us have had at one point or another. For example.... these days people use good looking men or women dressed in practically nothing to sell the most ridiculous products or services.... why... because it appeals to our main drive. The top selling books and movies are usually horror or action movies where the story is nothing but aggression/sex/and sadistic roles. Why? Because it appeals to one of our main drives. Marketing is pretty simple if you get down to the psychology of it. Tempt people with what they desire the most.... fame, popularity, sex, and otherwise lavish life styles and more attractive bodies. "Normal" people usually try to hide some of these feelings because they are uncomfortable with them or they have otherwise grown up to believe that they are some how wrong or evil. Even if the person thinks they aren't susceptible to marketing banter, they unconsciously cant help themselves. P.S. When Freud talked about aggression and sex he was also talking about many of the related drives such as love, lust, hate, envy, ect.
  6. I’m not very familiar with contemporary psychology ideas. Mostly because i just started studying psychology and usually you start with the basic ideas of Freud, Jung, Watson, Skinner, Charco, Alport, Coon, Brener, Lock and so forth. They all happen to be dead What i can collectively say from what i have learned so far is that many of their ideas seem to be unbiased against these 2 orientations.
  7. 15 chapters :/ eh .... well .... well .... if i read it, and help you out with the psychological states of the particular killer prior and during his psychosis you DEFENITLY OWE ME! So how would you like to send it to me? Email?
  8. Ok, read the whole post, very interesting.
  9. Anyone familiar with Freud’s models of the mind, more specifically the topographical model? Kind of fits into this thread, I thought maybe someone would be interested in it or knows something about it. I happen to be studying it ATM. Subconscious - Repressed Thoughts Preconscious - Storage Conscious - Active Thoughts Does anyone believe that repressed thoughts are primarily repressed because of some negative feeling we have associated them with. Or that they are simply too sadistic and uncomfortable that if we were to think about them we would be so shocked and afraid that we might act out the thoughts that we never let them get into our conscious in the first place? Also, I haven’t got to reading that whole speal sunspot, I read most of it, and most of the stuff I have heard of at one point or another. You sound like you know a lot about biology of the brain and psychology so I will probably be picking your brain more often. I just wanted to add to something you said. We will never be able to fully understand consciousness because we have no way of completely reaching into the subconscious. We have great understanding of the conscious mind, as you have so clearly diagramed in your post sunspot. The problem is, nearly all of those thought processes are being controlled one way or another by our subconscious mind.(psychic determinism). Then of course another problem is perspectives and scientific paradimes, which are really only explanations of something by using our own thoughts to thread isolated bits of information into what we call "facts". Unfortunately there is no such thing as facts. Nonetheless I could agree that our understanding of consciousness is growing at an exponential rate. Unfortunately we will never fully be able to understand it.
  10. Sensory deprivation is supposed to induce schizophrenic like hallucinations more real than any drug. I still think this is the most plausible way to induce hallucinations without drugs, but people usually go insane during the treatment and are never able to fully recover...... i still wanna try one day
  11. How long is it? I might be interested; I have some knowledge on schizophrenic psychology and biology.
  12. You guys are going to hate me i went back and reviewed my notes and guess what.... the priest had actually left priesthood after many years... partly because he didn’t like the celibacy and he wanted to be a father...and felt many things were missing from his life .... but still couldn’t bring himself to take part in sexual acts and have a bonded realtionship .... that changes things a lot doesn’t it I’m sorry. Btw: Water(river) = Sex 2 Girls = Temptation Pole = Penis Fish = Disease Cliff Fall = "Lowering Standards" Whale = Avoidable danger That’s a REAL general run down of the symbolism. Interesting interpretation sunspot, that was refreshing... you are very open minded or at least able to think out side of the box. Good job, I’m sure those are all valid ideas. Pretty soon im going to have to give my full out interpretation.... but ill let this thread age a bit more first
  13. the ladies didnt get eaten.... rofl And I would argue that any form of education is brainwash..... Our school system is essentially brain wash IE: They teach doctors how to diagnose a condition and how to treat it with drugs.... they don’t teach them how to cure anything ... this way the drug companies continue to sell drugs and so on.... same can be said with many other things that we just automatically assume is truthful.... like religion ... that canned, boxed, and other wise processed food is healthy for you ... many things ... even scientists could be considered a cult that tries to influence society with their "findings" it all comes down to your own personal opinion ... doh!
  14. I have my thoughts on how and why i happened to have this dream last night. I was chewing tobacco and i actually tasted the familiar taste...and as my mouth filled up with spit i had to go outside to spit it out...and when i did i actually spit physically on my pillow and woke up....laughed at myself and went back to sleep.... so that solves one question... yes... we can taste in our dreams.... just i dont think we do as often as we see and hear things... lol .... im going to try and smell something tonight still cant believe i spit on my pillow lol!
  15. I don’t really need to, everyone nailed it, but if you REALLY want, I DO have the interpretation on tape, from the psychologist who dealt with the Priest. However, I must warn, its not as in depth as you might think.... many of the people in this thread have gone into it way more than this psychologist did on tape.... probably for patient/doctor confidentiality. On another note, do you think anyone would get really offened if i started a thread about religon and how it is all, more or less, bs?
  16. Starbug1, Great interpretation. That’s the cool thing about dream analysis...there can be many different possible interpretations but usually only one meaning. Without extensive psycho therapy the actual meaning is hard to determine...and even then, one psychologists opinion can greatly differ from anothers. Reverse, I think your right...the fact that the man dreamed about fish probably has something to do with his faith. On another note...... It’s amazing what the power of suggestion can do to the mind. Religion, in my opinion, is brainwash through the power of suggestion. Religion is simply a cult with some power.....arg! it gets me so mad that people still believe in a "fairy tale" if you believe in the bible you might as well believe in every other piece of fiction ever written! ARG ANYWAYS THATS NOT WHAT THIS THREAD IS ABOUT!
  17. Any body care to make a dream up or share a dream of their own? Some of us would probably like to analyze it! Its all in the name of science!
  18. his IQ had dropped 45 points! what was he to do....!
  19. I don’t know.... I wish I did! I have another thread where I talk about smelling and tasting in a dream...this is something that imp very curious about.... how come we cant remember exactly a smell or taste from a dream...but can remember visuals and maybe even audios? !!!!!
  20. Yeah, I think I grasp how the idea works...iv been reading up.... pretty cool.... seems the circuit board uses all of those pieces to effectively channel and store bits of the 1's and 0's and then arranges them in a specific way to make up circuit board language...which is where I get lost again but its coming together none the less!
  21. Those are all valid ideas, thanks! Ill let a few more people try until I spill the beans...I have a clinical psychologists interpretation of the dream here...just waiting to be spilled out...
  22. No they wouldn’t asses any risk... they would do it without thought... That’s what I was getting at.... we as humans have the ability TO think about those actions.
  23. Dream.... and remember your dreams.... then as time goes on you might be able to become aware in your dream that you are in fact dreaming and you might be able to manipulate your experiences in that dream in a way that you experience some serious audio and visual hallucinations. As far as hallucinating without drugs, the only way is to daydream I guess...or like someone suggested.... don’t sleep for 2 or 3 days. You can also try sensory depravation.... where you essentially strap yourself into a body bag, put earplugs in and completely remove yourself from all senses. After a day or 2 of this dreams will actually seem like real conscious experiences, which could be defined as hallucinations. I would recommend doing this under the supervision of doctors and or psychologist/psychiatrist
  24. http://www.scienceforums.net/forums/showthread.php?p=242568#post242568 I talk about instinct as motives or drives in this thread....might help explain.
