I just use "New posts / mark all posts read" from the quick menu and it works fine.
The problems that appear with the 'marked read' system are usually cookie-related. If your browser is set to only store cookies per session, that will create problems.

If you use the [code/code] BB tags, you can make a block of monospaced text. All characters will take up the same horizontal space, and spaces will not be collapsed.

You need a particular service on the server hosting the site, called a "streaming mount point".
This is not normally packaged with hosting services and you'd have to pay extra for it, plus you would need the proper software to make the streaming media files themselves.
