  1. There is no evidence whatsoever that ganglia in insects support any form of consciousness (at least in the way we're describing it), so it's not the best comparison. Ganglia are more analogous to logical circuit loops. A human nervous system can still respond to stimulus without the brain stem afaik.
  2. Not true. There will be plenty of vibrations - the fact that they aren't transmitted as sound means diddly squat. It's not so much a matter of losing energy; it's the fact that the energy of the system is either conserved (i.e., nothing can be extracted without ruining the mechanism), or declines (which is worse). The processes behind this have already been described.
  3. The first semester of any degree is usually a lot easier than the following ones. You'll need to work quite a lot harder to keep your grades consistent after that If you have serious concerns about your grades falling despite your best efforts, you should definitely speak to a tutor or similar and try to identify what areas are giving you trouble. I had similar problems on my degree, and with hindsight would have got a better grade if I'd acted sooner.
  4. Don't you need interaction to establish a psychological standpoint at all?
  5. It is a crackpot theory. Cells do not have consciousness. Biology doesn't even provide a specification for what or where consciousness 'is'. Cells do communicate and they are aware of the immediate surroundings, but that is just biochemistry.
  6. Magnetic bearings wouldn't change much even if you could work them into the design some how - the same problem of energy conservation would occur.
  7. No it didn't - you were given bad reputation. Stop speculating. It had issues, so it was disabled.
  8. Sorry, I don't have your extensive knowledge of parenting so what exactly do you mean by "addressed by"? Imo kids have plenty to be doing and thinking about while growing up without having to get it into their heads that horrible things happen to people in both fictional and real situations. Having sneaked up to watch a lot of movies I was too young to see, when I was a kid, I can tell you now I saw a lot of things I'd rather not have seen at that age. Kids should be playing and laughing like kids, not learning why Jimmy is having his head stoved in and car burned by Franky Knuckles. [edit] For instance, do you think you need to expose a 6-yr old kid to the horrors of House of 1,000 Corpses or the remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, just in case they get attacked by a family of weirdoes while on a road-trip in some 10 years time? Just the fact that they wouldn't make any sense of the plot or motivations makes that funny; the actual content of the films makes it a sick idea. I think you'd draw the line before those particular films (if not, I pity your future kids). But now we're at a point where we have to ask "where should a line be drawn?", which we've encountered before in other discussions. And what do you know! Turns out film classifications aren't put on there just for a joke! They're actually attributed by a uniform system of criterion satisfaction! Wow, that's almost like the line was agreed on by various panels and put in place for you, so you don't need to screen everything your children watch for scenes you don't think are suitable.
  9. It has been taken down until it can be vastly improved.
  10. You installed Longhorn over XP? You didn't use a partition?
  11. We have already told you why it won't work. It's your lack of appreciation of physics that is the problem, not ours.
  12. Subscribed threads are ones you want to keep an eye on - you'll be notified by mail when people reply. You may be automatically subscribed to threads you reply in, depends if the setting is on or off in your user CP. Go to "User CP" to see which threads you are subscribed to (and remove any if you wish to). Under "options" there should be the option to turn off automatic subscription.
  13. That covers it nicely, although nobody mentioned energy will also be lost as sound. Lots of it.
  14. Oh dear. Are you sure you weren't thrown down the stairs by a horde of angry gay people?
  15. The "no it can't happen because..." comments in this thread are based on biased assumptions about what life actually is.
  16. I wouldn't have bothered checking if it weren't for the phrase "brilliant and revolutionary". That's really over-playing the game
  17. I can't help but notice you two are on the same netblock, separated by a mere 0.0.0.40
  18. No, reply #8 was a response to bobg@y, whose puerile trolling has since been deleted.
  19. I'm using the latest Mandrake build and I'm finding it quite easy to pick up. It's 3 CDs, and you can download it free from various mirror sites.
  20. I suspect Longhorn is designed to accomodate Microsoft's business needs rather than the needs of the average Windows user.
  21. I'm not being cynical, I'm saying you were right
  22. That's not a great sample group, compared to the tens of thousands of people cancer kills regardless of their disposition.
