  1. Past readings of methane detected in the Martian atmosphere by telescopes on Earth have now been corroborated by ESA's Mars Express orbital craft. This find is significant for two reasons: 1 - It can only have come from active volcanoes, or life. Since volcanoes are easier to detect by many orders of magnitude, and we have found no active ones in decades of observations, it seems unlikely that they explain the gas. Active volcanoes being identified as the source would not preclude the possibility of life, since volcanic activity infers heat, which could provide both the melt-water and mineral deposits required to sustain possible Martian anaerobic bacteria. 2 - Methane breaks down rapidly in the Martian atmosphere. This means that the detected volumes were recently produced (within about 100 years), and probably being replenished constantly. Read the full story: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/3577551.stm
  2. I just read this morning that a new bill coming in in the United Kingdom grants gay partners the right to register in a "partnership agreement" that gives them the same rights as married couples. This means that separations will go through the courts, divorce-style, and it will mean better protection for any children involved as well as "normal" inheritance rules.
  3. Putting the law in place doesn't necessarily actually change the level of radiation though, that's the problem. This looks helpful: http://www.slavweb.com/eng/fsu/cherno-e0.html I remember talking to a post-grad while I was at university. This guy had been doing research into mutations in annelids etc in the areas surrounding Chernobyl, and had to constantly hide his movements from the authorities. This suggests it might not be easy to get good information on the radiation levels in the immediate area.

  6. Curious. When someone says "GAY!" near you, what's the first thing that pops into your head?

    Question?

Without water... in the middle of the ocean?
  8. I already did. Can you guess which signature is mine?
  9. Or maybe it is because that's not a registered domain?
  10. Network them and use a VNC. Easy.
  11. Post #22: Dogmatic cult links removed, e-mail notification turned off.
  12. It's unlikely we'll ever produce enough clones to damage our ecosystem, given that they will require more resources to produce than does simple child-birth, and given that human cloning is never going to be an unregulated activity. Also, there's no difference between overcrowding the planet with clones and overcrowding the planet with naturally birthed people in terms of the damage that will be done, so it's a warning against population increase per se rather than a warning against cloning.
  13. I'm thinking he probably just got hold of a spare paper, and added the "marking" himself. Still good entertainment
  14. I'm the Dalai Lama apparently: Economic Left/Right: -3.50 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -3.59
  15. Why does there need to be a debate about it? We don't debate whether or not we think "the darkies' side of the story" justifies people being black. Hey NSX, what's that "Q" on the end of LBGQ?
  16. ALL HAIL! The .gov here is a bit worried about voters doing their job and putting them out on their asses, so they're talking about tax cuts for people with children. HEY KIDS - NOT ONLY WILL WE PAY YOU CHILD SUPPORT FOR EACH SPROG YOU CAN MANAGE TO SPAWN, WE'LL CHARGE YOU LESS TAX TOO! STAY AT HOME! MAKE BABIES! LIVE OFF THE ACTUAL TAXPAYERS! Grrrrr.
  17. I guess that makes you a genius then.
  18. No matter how many times I see it, that never gets any less funny.
  19. ...And in an ironic twist your post becomes the lamest in the thread in terms of input. Except maybe this one.
