You mean calling him a "racist"? That is no more "name calling" than referring to someone a "physicist" or a "plumber". Name calling implies an insult. "Racist" is a title he earned all by himself. I don't see what is to be gained by dancing around words to spare people's feelings. This place is not a quilting circle. So there is the "status quo" and there is "your way". Some people feel there are other means to change the status quo, and they don't involve allowing others a platform to share hatred and bigotry. I allow no room in my heart for showing understanding for racism. Hatred of others based on the color of their skin is never acceptable to me. I will not stand by while others spew hate without calling them out. There is a reason people lose sponsors, advertisers, and even jobs after making racist comments. It is not acceptable. I don't see why we should be an exception.

Well, maybe not yet, but we are certainly on the way. One of the reasons NASA contracted with private launch companies is to spur the growth of private enterprise in space. https://www.forbes.com/sites/elizabethhowell1/2019/11/28/nasa-gets-ready-for-the-private-astronaut-business/#34a1467958df

So if I only make fire hoses, which are only sold to fire departments, mine is not a private enterprise? What if the only customers of my office cleaning company are city government offices?

This thread has nothing to do with your justifications for why you and your friends do not like black people and their loud music, or why Hitler was "ok". Go spread your racist views elsewhere.

You're killing me Smalls.

Candace is creating a straw man. "I am not going to accept the narrative that this (George Floyd) is the best that the black community has to offer." I have seen no one make that claim. Mourning him as a martyr is not the same as claiming he lived a great life. Given her background I am not surprised though. She is a racist's dream. A young, educated black woman who dislikes BLM and likes Hitler. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turning_Point_USA Here is what Wikipedia has to say about Turning Point USA, widely considered to be a racist organization, for whom Candace worked as their communications director. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turning_Point_USA

Are you saying that it would stand to reason there is resistance, because without resistance photon travel between two points would be instantaneous? If that is not what you are suggesting, can you please explain why being able to calculate how long it takes to get from point A to point B given a constant speed implies resistance?

Unbelievable. Those asshole cops deserve whatever punishment we can throw at them. WARNING: Vey disturbing.

LOL! I just said essentially the same thing in another thread he is polluting. 😃

I've used it for decades. Works like a charm for me and smells a hell of a lot better than Deep Woods Off.

I don't know if I'd call it hostility but all bad acts and actors are called out on a regular basis. The treatment of indigenous peoples in North America by colonialists, the Vietnam war, action of the Founding Fathers, etc. I imagine that would be true in all countries in the West. For example Mr. Colston.

Do we have to solve all problems at once? Can't we just deal with the monuments in this thread and figure out what else should be done later? I don't think you intend to do it, but "whataboutism" is a classic red herring technique to draw people off the trail of the topic at hand.

You seem to have a very specific approach to a very general issue. You want reminders, and it's "short-sighted and naive" to remove the statue of this one particular guy. And you don't want to add other statues. Why? What's so great about this particular statue? Is it more important to be reminded of this scofflaw over all others who do not have a statue? Shouldn't children be prompted to ask about other bad actors? The history we want to remember is the man and his acts, not the manufacture and erection of a statue. I understand a general desire to ensure we don't forget, but statues and monuments are usually reserved for those we wish to emulate. Not those we deem unworthy citizens.

Lest we forget, perhaps we should put up statues of ALL tyrants.

That kind of fantasizing is certainly enjoyable which is why science fiction is so popular. But this is a science site and you are in the physics section. More is required to maintain a discussion. -

Is this belief based in science or in emotion? -
Well, start by not having them kneel on the neck of a handcuffed suspect. Next, if they have a knife, don't approach them right away, keep a car between you, learn how to recognize mental illness. Finally, don't ASSUME they have a gun and want to shoot you. Yes, you ask them all if they have recently had a hip replacement. Because that would be the reasonable change to expect after seeing two officers pushing an unarmed, lone septuagenarian to the ground.

Were they? If so, then training/orders is the problem. Who fell to the ground and cracked his skull. The team then just kept walking past him. I imagine if he had not fallen we wouldn't know anything about this incident, but if training/orders involves indiscriminate use of force then the problem is bigger than I thought. I think we have a perfect storm of training police to aggressively take control, a heavily armed public, along with an underlying current of racism. Bad combination. I believe until police are trained more like they are in other countries, where the goal seems to be to 'deescalate' rather than 'take control', and are HELD RESPONSIBLE for their actions, this will not end anytime soon. The protests and riots we are experiencing now are another drop in the bucket of moving us toward a more tolerant society. It's a terribly slow process but I believe that is inevitable.

Har! Q. What was the last thing that went through the bug's mind when he hit the windshield? A. His ass. Maybe it's just me but I think you may be flossing incorrectly. I wrap floss around my fingers to floss my teeth and it never hurts.

People are not insects to be treated as pests. They are important and their lives have meaning. I cannot believe anyone would rekindle the idea of forced sterilization. It harkens back to some of the most odious acts in human history.

I find the idea repugnant.
