Is playing video games good or bad for you?
zapatos replied to John Harmonic's topic in Other Sciences
Good or bad in what respect? -
Religion as evolutionary trait
zapatos replied to Itoero's topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
Wouldn't this also make drinking beer in a pub with your mates an evolutionary trait? Citation? -
Just a minor point but Due Process never comes into play.

Yes, his life is adversely affected by these allegations. If the allegations are not true, then the adverse effects are not fair. If the allegations are true, then the adverse effects are fair. Sucks for him if the allegations are not true, but what are you going to do? Unfortunately there is no way to bring such allegations to light and force an investigation unless the allegation is made public. At best we can punish the person making the allegation if untrue and it was done with malice.

When a is persons body at peak performance?
zapatos replied to John Harmonic's topic in Anatomy, Physiology and Neuroscience
Between ages 25 and 40. -
Most guys I know have an eagle tat or a snake tat.
-
Okay, I see your point. Thanks.

Don't leave us in suspense. Please tell us who you are talking about. If you have someone in mind it is not really fair to splatter others with the stink of not supporting the need for evidence. And I'm sure the person you do have in mind would like the opportunity to respond.

So given a long enough period of time, would all bodies in our merged galaxy merge into a single entity (black hole or whatever)?
-
Would we see no other galaxies beyond our own, or would we still remain gravitationally bound to the galaxies in our supercluster?

The ethicist would also be involved in whether or not the patient is sent to another hospital. There are times when it is illegal to transport them, and all hospitals do work they are not compensated for.
-
Appointing a guardian prior to the surgery would be unrealistic, but it seems inevitable that a guardian would be appointed sometime afterward. Someone has to make decisions for the person who is incapable of doing so for themselves. Prior to the surgery I believe hospitals use an ethicist to make such decisions.
-
Correct.
-
Since the person is mentally incapable of making decisions, I imagine the courts will appoint a guardian who is responsible for making medical and financial decisions on their behalf. Assuming the guardian is appointed after the surgery was done, and the surgery was necessary, and the patient had the funds, I believe the guardian will be compelled to pay.

I guess this characterization of what is alleged by Ford to be "an immature moment" is what really bothers me. Women will never be safe if men characterize this type of behavior as an 'immature moment' instead of a serious assault. This was not a case of a boy trying for second base when she only wanted to go to first base. Regardless of whether or not the assault occurred, to dismiss it so easily does a disservice not only to women but to all of us.

Obviously false. No one is in jail. No one is going without a defense by a great number of people. No one is even out of the running for Supreme Court. Obviously false. She is not to be believed without a doubt. She is not asking to be believed beyond a doubt. It was Ford who requested an official investigation so that you didn't simply have to take her word for it. Have you been demonized? I know I haven't. Absolutes such as "all" are rarely used on a science site. I thought the arguments I have now made in this post were obvious enough that I didn't have to spell them out. My mistake. Yes I'm sure the death threats are exactly what she wants. Exactly how did you come to the conclusion that she is after fame?
-
With all due respect, give me a fucking break. See above... Frankly I'm surprised this kind of nonsense is coming from you. Yep, there are indeed people in the world who do bad things. It almost seems as if you did not realize women could be bad.

Is there a limit to physical pain?
zapatos replied to chamin's topic in Anatomy, Physiology and Neuroscience
I was stung by a stingray once. Probably not as bad as the pain others are describing, but I clearly remember thinking "so this is how I'm going to die". -
I can't believe this thread is allowed to continue.

I really do appreciate the offer but I'm kind of busy at the moment. I think I will wait and take the class when it is taught in school.

Why can a woman sue a man for child support in rape cases?
zapatos replied to Raider5678's topic in Politics
To the best of my knowledge it's a lawsuit once you file the papers, which then requires the selection of a judge and a response by the defendant. You are being "sued" whether the case makes it to trial or not. -
The Disappearing Spoon -- by Sam Kean "...Kean rectifies that in this amble from element 1, hydrogen, to element 112, copernicium. Attaching stories to a human-interest angle, Kean ensures that with his elaboration of the fixation a chemist, physicist, industrialist, or artist had for a particular element comes clarity about why the element behaves as it does. The soft sell about proton numbers and electron shells thus closes the deal for Kean’s anecdotes about elements of war, elements of health, and elements of wealth, plus the title’s practical joke of a spoon (made from gallium)."
