  1. That is not necessarily so. Whether or not a Big Crunch begins must take into account the velocity of the expansion and the amount of mass in the universe. The universe could theoretically expand forever even without the effect of Dark Energy.
  2. You'll be blowing both. http://users.rowan.edu/~farrell/hohb/Respiration.htm
  3. That was a very biased report. ("The U.S. is Spending Your Money Killing Innocent Wildlife") It would be helpful to see an opposing viewpoint in order to come to a fair conclusion about what is going on. Dekan - The US is a big country. We can manage to go about our daily business and have room for wolves also.
  4. I see something very similar, but to me it seems as if aliens are for those who are rejecting the notion of god but cannot quite accept the notion that we are beholden to no one. God may seem too ridiculous, but Egyptians building pyramids by themselves seems unbelievable. Substitute aliens for god and you've found a happy medium that lets you deny god but still have an explanation for things you cannot understand. I believe aliens for some people are simply baby steps for doing away with the notion of god.
  5. Make commitments to people regarding when work will be complete. Mention it to people around you. The more people who know when you will complete some work, the more likely you will be to actually do it. No one wants others to think of them as lazy or undependable. If I want to lose five pounds I tell my wife I'm going on a diet. I have a hard time preparing a bowl of ice cream in front of her when I just told her I was going to lose weight. Fear of losing face is a great motivator.
  6. Clearly you haven't spent much time in the Sciences section. The debates there are sometimes spectacular. Instead of saying "I usually see scientists agreeing on the same bias" you would have been better served to say 'I usually see scientists agreeing on the same evidence'. Because they do. It is not bias if it is based on evidence. If you are really interested in seeing scientists go at it, here is a whole course you can take, and to make it a manageable sized course it limits itself to debates regarding the Rise of Humans: http://www.thegreatcourses.com/tgc/courses/course_detail.aspx?cid=1612
  7. Why would time be a consideration? If you push on the side of a building for a long enough time, will it eventually fall over?
  8. You can roughly find the sweet spot by letting the bat hang straight down, by holding the very end of the handle with your finger tips. You then take another bat and lightly hit where you believe the sweet spot to be. If you miss the sweet spot the bat will wobble. If you hit the sweet spot the bat will smoothly swing away. We used that method to teach the kids where they want the bat to hit the ball.
  9. What does the consensus say?
  10. I can't say I've ever run across anyone else who believed in the devil but not God. Do you think the devil created the universe?
  11. Gravity decreases with distance from the center of mass. The reason we would not notice a difference if our sun suddenly became a black hole of equal mass is because we would still be the same distance from the center of mass of either one. Gravity increases the closer you get to the center of mass. If we took a trip toward the sun, the gravitational pull on us would continue increasing as we got closer and closer. But the closest we can get to the center of mass of the sun with maximum gravity, is the sun's surface. After that, as we move closer to the center of the sun, some of the mass of the sun is now above us, thus causing gravity to decrease. In fact, if you were in the center of the sun, gravity would cancel out in all directions and you would be weightless. If on the other hand the sun was now suddenly a black hole and we took a trip toward it, the gravitational pull on us would continue increasing as we got closer and closer, just like it did with the sun. And when we got to the distance away from the black hole that is exactly the same distance as we were when we were on the surface of the sun, the gravity would be equivalent. But with the black hole, we can keep getting closer to the center of mass of the black hole before we reach its 'surface'. And as we get closer to the center of mass, the gravity continues to increase. At the point of the event horizon, the gravity is so great that not even light can escape.
  12. Sort of like military types wearing specific head gear, like green berets? Yeah, that certainly seems likely. It makes them feel elite.
  13. Could be, but why do you think that?
  14. Sorry, I missed your point.
  15. God. http://www.tomorrowsworld.org/node/579 I imagine you follow the same guidelines as give for the listed animals. "Most unclean animals are carnivores or scavengers that can transmit dangerous diseases to human beings. Pigs eat roots and grains, rather than grass, and thus are ecological competitors to human beings. Clean fish have fins and scales. Unclean aquatic organisms like clams and oysters are filter feeders that purify water, and that concentrate poisonous chemicals and pathologic bacteria and viruses in their tissues."
  16. That depends on from where you are measuring the gravity, and the sizes of the black hole and the star. If our sun suddenly became a black hole with no loss of mass, there would be no change in gravity from our perspective. A five solar mass black hole would have 'less' gravity than a six solar mass star.
  17. I don't see why not. Not that aliens would have mated with earthlings, but if aliens are the original life on earth, then we could certainly be their descendents.
  18. The reason has to do with maintaining good health. It was thought that eating 'unclean' foods could lead to human disease. http://www.tomorrowsworld.org/node/579
  19. Then why bring it up? No one here said it was. Notice how I did not fall for you substituting 'water expansion' for 'growth of ice'? Or 'biological growth' for 'growth'? Seriously though, you can only say plants have consciousness if you redefine the definition of consciousness. Plenty of things 'respond to stimuli' that are not conscious, so that is a bogus definition. Crystals can grow if you add the right 'stimulus' to a beaker of chemicals.
  20. Sure it does. Set a glass of water outside during the winter and watch.
  21. So if plants responding to sunlight makes them conscious, I guess the ice on my driveway is conscious too.
  22. Does this mean my ficus is not alive?
  23. I didn't really find that he had much to say about the US at all. Primarily menageriemanor's post was about our 'image' abroad. It was also about Oz and other countries, how they and others are not like us, how they do things better, how they viewed the US poorly, didn't need guns, didn't want to live here, etc. When it came to actual statements about the US, we got very little, and even less that was any more than hearsay: "Wait staff almost never get enough to survive on wage alone." - Yes, we know. That is why tipping is almost universal in the US. Not tipping in other places is not necessary because the get higher wages. So what? One way or the other they get the money. Either from the customer directly, or from the owner, who gets it from the customer directly. "One of America's loudest claims to the world, is that it is a proud, god fearing country." - Citation? "The reality is the still wrecked St Louis, etc flood areas" - As I live in St. Louis I was really perplexed by this one. We haven't had a decent flood in 10 years. If the 'etc.' meant the recent flooding in New York and New Jersey, I think they need just a bit more time to clean things up. It was after all only four months ago and it did $75 billion in damages. "the industrial wastelands, all of which could be turned around, if the wealthy paid fair taxes." - Citation? At least something just a bit more specific. "The world saw the large scale horror of little initial or follow up care for those flood victims" - Hurricane Sandy? I'd like to see some backup documentation on that one. Sounds like a lot of unsubstantiated America bashing to me. We have enough real problems to take issue with that there is no need for this nonsense.
  24. menageriemanor - I repeat, you do not comprehend much about America.
