  1. One of the primary functions of bark, just like skin, is to keep water inside. It can take a couple of years for bark to begin sloughing off a standing tree. The more heartwood you expose to the air the faster it will dry.
  2. I think I would try a very high speed grinder with a relatively fine edge and a light touch. The idea being you remove very small pieces very quickly before the silicone gets to respond much to the impact of the grit on the grinder. Perhaps a Dremel would work for you.
  3. I'd like to second that motion.
  4. From your link: Sounds like the way I pictured villages and settlements was not too far off.
  5. I frequently read in the media about Ukraine retaking villages and settlements in the east of the country. I don't see too many villages or settlements in the US, except when a new housing development creates a name they think sounds sophisticated, such as "Sycamore Village", or "The Village of Heaven's View Estates". Other than those pompous names, when I think of 'village' or 'settlement', what comes to mind is rural settings, often with the men carrying swords or people selling fish by the shore. What are villages and settlements like in Ukraine?
  6. You are wrong in your understanding of what 'bigot' means. He stated: "The problem with atheists is they make zero effort to quantify these basic contextual paradigms. They simply expect people who lived 2,000 years ago to know and follow the same ideals and standards modern day humans do today. " He assigned a negative trait ('make zero effort') to all individuals based on their membership in a group (atheism). big·ot /ˈbiɡət/ Learn to pronounce noun a person who is obstinately or unreasonably attached to a belief, opinion, or faction, especially one who is prejudiced against or antagonistic toward a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular group. In addition, he provided no "reasoning". He simply made a ridiculous assertion about what atheists expect of people who lived in the past. i.e. "They simply expect people who lived 2,000 years ago to know and follow the same ideals and standards modern day humans do today. " I stand by my call. I also find it amusing that you think you know the motivation behind my posts. e.g. That you think I am trying to stop a discussion I disagree with. Better to ask why I am saying something than to guess and state it as if it were a fact.
  7. Looks like they are working on step four of their nine step process, which they expect to take at least a decade to complete. https://pursuit.unimelb.edu.au/articles/the-9-steps-to-de-extincting-australia-s-thylacine
  8. Then the polite thing to do would be to provide it when asked. But since he didn't make that claim, you are the only one here that is still expected to provide some evidence. Please Note: As this is a science site, the culture is such that when asked to provide evidence, a citation, etc. for a claim, you are expected to do so. It allows others to verify claims and learn new things. Asking for evidence is not an aggressive move, it is standard practice and accepted by all.
  9. Semen exits the body the same way urine does. It is not a stretch to think that the exit of one could influence the other. Similarly vomiting can lead to lung issues. Who would have thought that excessive masturbation could protect you from prostate cancer?
  10. Good. Then please humor me and provide a scientific citation that says "Nature is defined by a cycle where life and living things are constantly recycled, to produce new life."
  11. The problem with bigots is that they assign negative traits to individuals based simply on their membership in a group.
  12. No, it isn't. I've never seen that definition, and since life is such a small part of nature it seems unlikely. If you are going to make such a claim without providing any evidence, please at least provide your reasoning.

  14. Three explosions? Meaning three sections of pipe? Don't you just remove any sections of pipe, even if say 100 meters long, and lay new pipe? They've already laid hundreds of miles of pipe so clearly they have the know-how. Obviously pumping out the seawater will take time, but surely they must have planned for breaches in the pipeline.
  15. But expansion involves space, not matter, correct? Matter is not moved by expansion. For expansion to not occur on smaller scales seems to imply that matter is stopping expansion. Just because gravitationally bound objects don't separate due to expansion, I don't think we can conclude that space in that area is not experiencing expansion.
  16. I would assume leaks have formed in the past, or are at least planned for, and repairs should not be a big deal. Apparently they are at a depth even divers can reach.
  17. I read once that expansion is everywhere, even 'pushing' apart the atoms in your body, but of course to an unmeasurable extent. This happens because the expansion energy exists whether or not there is matter present. The analogy I use (don't know if it is necessarily a good one...) is imaging a ball bearing on a table with a magnet to the right of it and them representing the two masses, and a fan to the right of both and blowing toward them. The breeze is analogous to expansion and it always has an effect on the ball bearing, trying to push it away. The closeness of the magnet and ball bearing determine whether the ball bearing moves away, remains in place, or rolls toward the magnet.
  18. I used to read my dad's books after he was done with them. Included a lot of spy thrillers, detectives, murders and sex. My parents didn't care but they never would have been approved by my school.
  19. I thought the search record was maintained by the browser.
