The universe - Repeats again?! (Mind**** warning)
zapatos replied to Kittenpuncher's topic in Amateur Science
Popular science is generally simplified to make the concepts understandable to a non-scientific group of people. Often times it is simplified to the point where it is misleading, and given that popular science writers often don't understand the concepts well themselves, a lot of people end up with misconceptions. Many of the people on this site work or teach in science on a daily basis and love to share what they know. Ask all the questions you wish and tell us what you think. If you think someone here is wrong, it is usually best to ask them for clarification before you suggest they are mistaken. If you do suggest they are mistaken, do so while linking to outside sources that support your position. People here are never shy about telling each other when they've made a mistake. If it happens to you don't take it personally, as it is how people work to arrive at the best answer. Welcome aboard! 😄 -
That didn't help me understand why it should never be done; only why Chris Rock shouldn't have done this particular joke. I was watching a Modern Family episode and they made a joke about an adoptive 7 year old Asian daughter crashing her toy car, saying "we always knew there was a good chance she'd be a bad driver". A Saturday Night Live skit made fun of Trump's small hands. I'll have to pay more attention to check, but I'm not sure there are any comics or comedy shows that do not poke fun at one person/group or another. Can't say that I see many jokes like you describe here. Sounds like you are fighting an enemy that doesn't exist to any great degree.

No. I'd much rather we tease and joke around with each other. We laugh all the time and I like that. I'd much rather she joke about things I have no control over because, well, I have no control. If she jokes about something I have control over there is the chance I could feel bad that I didn't do better. But my toes? Go for it! Wasting energy on something I have no control over is not something I generally do. What I fail to grasp is how anyone can suggest these jokes are out of line, period, when so many people don't mind.
-
I don't think I'm making myself clear. I believe you are mistaken in your apparent belief that joking about others is necessarily "bullying", "debasing" and has a dark undertone. Some of us assume the joker has no evil intent and instead is just trying to make us laugh. It certainly makes my wife's jokes funnier when I don't get offended when she pokes fun at my short toes, or when I built something that was too big to fit through the basement door and I had to disassemble it. They always have an emcee. Usually a comedian.
-
And that is the way YOU feel about it. Not everyone does. I laugh at jokes made at my expense all the time and am happy people are comfortable enough around me to make those jokes. Go to a comedy club and you'll see that people really like cheap jokes. If you don't want people joking at your expense, or don't want people telling certain types of jokes around you, then by all means tell them and be happy with your decision to do so. But comedy at the expense of others is here to stay and accepted by enough of society that it is not going away. I certainly don't make jokes at people's expense if I suspect it may not go over with them too well, but I usually find most people enjoy that type of joking around.

Part of the issue is that you cannot gauge ahead of time how someone will react to a joke. If you've ever watched a "roast" you'll know that with some people there is absolutely no joke that will cause them distress, while others can be bent out of shape by the mildest of teasing. We have a cabin on a river that we allow the extended family to use whenever it is available. My nephew went with some friends and managed to burn down a (very old) smoke house, pig shed and outhouse. He felt devastated that he was responsible, but almost immediately jokes started being directed toward him when he was seen lighting a candle or doing anything else related to fire. He was greatly relieved as the joking indicated that the situation maybe wasn't such a big deal after all. A real possible outcome of Rock's joke was that Jada Pinkett Smith may have felt relieved that people weren't walking on eggshells around her, and were basically saying "hey, we don't care if you have alopecia and you shouldn't either!" I know we can't blame people for being what might be considered 'thin-skinned', but we also shouldn't blame people for trying to be funny and maybe falling short.
-
But it's alopecia, not lung cancer or schizophrenia. I have male pattern baldness and people have made jokes at my expense since it began in late high school. While bald jokes are kind of cheap and not really that funny (to me), I have never once gotten terribly upset or felt the need to strike someone. As @StringJunky noted, jokes are nearly always at the expense of someone. While Rock's joke may not have been that funny, he was doing what he was hired to do and what the audience wanted and expected of him. If Smith had not struck Rock, nearly no one would have given the joke a second thought. I believe Rock did nothing wrong and that Smith needs to gain better control over his impulses.

We haven't but we've been collecting the fiber, and my wife just bought a spinning wheel. We may also send some fiber off to have something made rather than doing it ourselves. They are also due for a shearing next month which is a fun event (for us, not the alpacas!). It is the little ones. And Radar, while being a trouble maker, is also a big baby. If I go out to the barn in a different coat it takes him 10 minutes to decide if it is safe to come in to the barn with me. -

That is why we have three! We originally asked about buying two but the woman we bought them from would not sell us fewer than three. When they get stressed they stand around and hum. One of their better features is that they use a communal spot for relieving themselves, making it easier to clean up and less likely you'll step in anything. Har! Those would have been good names too. The names came with them though. They are registered when born just like show dogs. -

Radar is the smallest by about 40# and it the one who always stirs things up. Alpacas have small fighting teeth (two top, two bottom, pointing back in the mouth) and about the only thing they can do with them is bite ears. Radar put a two inch split Elliot's ear. Mostly though they just hang out together. Very gentle animals with distinct personalities. I let my three year old granddaughter walk amongst them feeding them by hand. -

I'm afraid you've come to the wrong place to "mindfuck" people with this kind of post. Perhaps a group of teenage stoners on TikTok might be so affected. Welcome to the site though. Hope you stay! 😁 -
Thank you for kind of admitting that even though you sort of hid it in the smoke and fog.

Fact checking seems to be a pretty good counter to propaganda, and allows us to avoid having to make the call on what should and should-not be blocked.

Yes, that is what I just said. So you agree with me that your original statement was inaccurate?

https://news.yahoo.com/russia-says-first-phase-ukraine-134534902.html Suggesting that the stalemate thus far is a 'completed first phase' sounds to me like Russia-speak for 'Let's cut our losses and look for a way out that we can call a victory'. This could indicate that the worst of this may soon be over.
