No. I'm talking about Australia. EVERYONE in Australia is at risk. The people in Australia who do not have access to the vaccine, the people in Australia who cannot take the vaccine due to their health, the people in Australia who choose not to take the vaccine, and the people in Australia who are vaccinated. Not to mention the mental health of health workers, the financial health of the health system, the emotional health of family members who die... I find it shocking that at this point in the pandemic, a member of this site is so woefully ignorant of the basics of the vaccine and the risks of the virus to the population. Unless you are suggesting he came to Australia for any reason other than to play tennis, it is his tennis choices they impacted. As he did not take the vaccine at their urging I cannot imagine how they impacted his health choices.
-
So I take it you are now admitting it was legal? Bullshit. YOU said "An individual's health choices are not something that should be determined by any administration." The government is not determining his HEALTH choices, it is determining his TENNIS choices, in THEIR country, by someone who is NOT a citizen. Bullshit. People who are vaccinated can die from the virus. Not everyone has access to the vaccine. Not everyone is healthy enough to take the vaccine. See above.

I would have guessed William Wallace (a.k.a. Mel Gibson).

Mutation (split from The Selfish Gene Theory)
zapatos replied to Evomumbojumbo's topic in Speculations
Are you being purposely obtuse? I didn't ask if there was a Big Bang. I asked "What do you mean when you say "at the beginning"?" Praise the Lord! 😇 -
Then how do you explain the fact that an elected official was able to unilaterally make that decision? If they "don't get to" then surely it either wouldn't have happened or will be overturned. Is a reversal in the works? First of all, no one held Novak down and injected a vaccine into him. That still remains his choice. Secondly, health choices that can impact the health of others are very much in the purview of government. Your individual rights do not allow you to do me harm. That is what most laws are all about. Fear mongering and continuum fallacy. I choose not to go down this path with you. Hardly a straw man. YOU claimed there was no legal basis for the decision. YOU claimed there was no rational basis for keeping unvaccinated people out of the country. The former requires a law against it (please provide support since you are claiming what was done was illegal). The latter is only true if vaccines don't work. If they do work, then there is a rational basis for reducing the number of unvaccinated people in Australia.

The elected officials and their representatives. I'm confident you already knew that though. Like mandating clean water may lead to mandating clean air? Or mandating food safety measures may lead to mandating drug safety measures? Just saying "slippery slope" does not automatically mean you've proven something bad will happen. I agree. I thought you were trying to support your argument in some way. You are doing nothing more than stating the obvious which doesn't in any way support your argument. If you are going to claim that vaccinations don't reduce deaths and expenses, or that it is illegal to mandate them for visitors, then I see no reason to carry on this conversation. https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/nejmc2106757

Higher than it was six months ago but not higher than it could be. My point is that the percentage could be higher than it is now, and that would be better for the public. Of course. What is your point with making that observation though? Yes, that's inconsistent. I've never seen any country that treated its citizens in exactly the same way as they treat their visitors. Why do you think they should? Those who are vaccinated spread the virus less than those who are not vaccinated. You make it sound like they don't.

The public good of course. Do you disagree the public benefits if a higher percentage of people are vaccinated?

Yes, it is acceptable to answer my question. Here, I'll list it again: -

What do you mean when you say "at the beginning". At the beginning of the Big Bang? At the beginning of the formation of the solar system? Just trying to understand your position here. -

What mechanism do you believe is at work? -
We're not always that strict here. Read any random thread and there are usually off-topic comments or conversations going on. Kind of depends on who is monitoring, and when it comes to other members complaining about off-topic conversations keep in mind that "off-topic" is in the eye of the beholder. "Off-topic" rules are most stringently enforced when they are blatant, or people are doing so along with other violations, such as preaching or pushing pet theories in science threads. Also, the person who starts the thread is allowed to define what is and is not off-topic. Always listen to the moderators as their judgement actually counts, and as you said, lurk a bit till you understand the culture. You'll get the hang of our idiosyncrasies.

Or a more boring explanation might be the chorus-line hypothesis. https://earthsky.org/earth/how-do-flocking-birds-move-in-unison/

Usually asking people to support their assertions or define their terms doesn't meet with such hostility. I'll leave you alone now. Sorry if i offended you. Agreed. I was just wondering about how wide spread it was. It seemed to me that mind control was way out there on the fringe and not generally common in the non-vaxxed population.
-
I think I want you to answer the question rather than asking questions in return. Just say you don't want to answer the questions I ask. We don't need to have a discussion. All true, but it didn't really answer my question about these people believing in mind-control and conspiracies.
-
How do you know that? How are you using the term 'anti-vaxxer'? Does that refer to people who are against all vaccines or those who are only against the COVID vaccine?
-
So you ARE saying he is an anti-vaxxer? How do you know all of those people are anti-vaxxer and believe the government is involved in mind control or conspiracy? Most of the articles I see describe them as NOT anti-vax, just not interested in this vaccine, and more akin to people who don't want to be told what to do.
-
Sorry, since the thread was about him I thought you were referring to him. Who exactly were the anti-vaxxers you were referring to who pretend "that vaccinations are some sort of new form of non tested or researched, insidious government attempt at mind control or conspiracy."?
-
How did you come by that diagnosis?

How was Novak being childish?

I don't think the comparison was humans to other living organisms, but humans to other components of the universe. If we know smallest and largest, we know where we fall. Don't we?
-
Interesting. Did you get your starter 'handful' from your aquarium?

I've always thought the universe behaved like a myopic halibut. Either way I'm not sure what the analogy buys us.
