Like ox1111, I grew up in a small town (coal mining) in WV. During the 17 plus years I lived there we had only one murder, (two ex GIs quarreling over a local squeeze), No suicides; but eight men died in mining accidents while one drunk suffocated, sleeping close to a gas heater in his own shower room. It may also sound strange, but in the 6th grade, three of my friends and I actually brought our shot guns to school so we could go hunting right after classes ended for the day. Even the principal thought it was a good idea since each of us lived a mile or better from the school and pot hunted to help supply Moms larder. Then there was Dukie, 9 or 10? He got killed while playing dodge 'em with a produce peddlers truck. The Shamblin boy, 11 or 12? He died of an infected appendix. And yes! We actually had people to die of natural causes. Other than turning a neighbors shit house over on Halloween, setting off a few sticks of dynamite in a tree to celebrate the New Year or 4th of July, we pretty much lived a tame and subtle life.

Poser? Ain't no way i'll try sneaking into your house! And using jug was a joke, Way too dainty for a real hick like you.

Just how much faith can we put in our fellow man? Thinking of the Newtown, CT massacre makes me shiver. To think that a 20 year old "young nut" literally destroys a school system after murdering his mother to steal her legally purchased firearms to accomplish such carnage is hard to believe or understand. Now an "elderly nut" gets his hands on illegal fire arm(s)? to murders a couple firemen and possibly his sister. And this, after spending 17 years in prison for the bludegoning murder of his grandmother. Are we missing something here? It seems both of these nuts were "sane enough" to kill themselves after accomplishing their gruesome deeds. http://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/12/25/fire-trap-gunman-dead-after-killing-2-firefighters What I'm asking is: Should a nation of over 300,000,000 descent people be punished o the limit for the sake of a few nuts "NUTS"? http://video.foxnews.com/v/2051761779001/calls-for-mental-health-reform-grow-after-newtown-massacre/?intcmp=obnetwork

Truth is, a need for the one is likely the means of countermanding the other. Sadly, you are probably right on both accounts.

Face it Moon, probably the only thing you've helds in your hands longer than a spoon or fork has been a "toke or shine jug".

Man! When some of you folks jump off topic, no one has a clue as to where it's going. Anyway, what the hell has T- Party people or Osama's religion have to do with this post? And as far as rightwing fantasies go, leftwing fanatics peaks volumes of prattle all by themselves.

Tar, this portion of your statement should give pause to anyone who thinks they are isolated from such an event. Bravado and B.S. are inherent to some degree in all of us. The courage and fortitude that female principal showed by rushing unarmed into harms way to protect those children, was bravery beyond my comprehension. Could I have done what she did? Only if I were armed, and even then; it would have been iffy. Quote by Tar: I am pretty much a nonconfrontationalist. If there is a way to defuse a situation, or allow the situation to disperse, without causing harm or injury, I would prefer that course. Swallow my pride from time to time to accomplish this. I would probably shit in my pants if I had to fight. But if it was the only way out, or other people were relying on me to do it, I might just be able to pull that trigger. I think it very unfair of you to challenge people's manhood and intenstinal fortitude, without knowing the people that you are referring to. I don't know if this will help Joatmon, but it's a try. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_population http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2012/jul/22/gun-homicides-ownership-world-list http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Metropolitan_Statistical_Areas http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_localities_in_England_by_population

Even the people who were with ben Ladin at the time of his death may not have known he was dead. His body was immediatly bagged up and whisked away by the SEAL team. Alluding to how slowly propaganda works at times; (ala Benghazi), it may have taken months before actual facts would have been known. You gotta remember, Bush made a king size ass of himself by flying out to that carrier and stupidly announcing "SHOCK & AWE" had been a great success.
-
No doubt many of the local folks were aware of the raid as it happened and others shortly there after. However, only SEAL team 6 and our government were privy to the reason for such a raid. And as for Ben Ladins death, it could have been concealed for months; but was blabbed to the world by the white house long before Ben's body had gone to room temperature.

john, your statements are rather ambiguous assumptions of various problems that has little or nothing to do with violence in our classrooms. While a moral tug between right and wrong in our brain continually determines how we deal with problems as we grow, this sanity or the lack of; sadly did not resonate with the young man. Don't know just where, but I've heard it said, and it says it all: There but for the grace of GOD go I.

As sick and despicable as the article describes it, the comparison is moot and bears no similarity to the present carnage in Newtown.
-
Just a gleam in my Dads eye, I suppose. Since I'm not aware of a 1927 mass school killing, run it by me. And the Lanza boy? As as I understand it, he hadn't been in that school for several years and his mother never taught there.
-
As much as I hate the prospect of something like this having to be initiated, it's probably the closest thing to sanity I've heard so far. As you say, regardless of teachers carrying concealed weapon or not, those signs may have been enough to deter psychologically even a deranged "potential nut case". Will it or can it possibly short circuit their want to achieve such mayhem? Who knows! But had these teachers been qualified to carry weapons and with signs like those mentioned hanging publicly, none of this may have happened.

Would you say then that this statement by iNnow in post # 148 is relevant to this discussion? Also, Ben Stein is an ignorant fool who thinks evolution is a big lie and that god intelligently designed our spleen and our poop hole right beside our pleasure parts, so there's always that, too.

Fortunately for us John that we all don't think like you.

John Cuthber, on 16 Dec 2012 - 13:39, said: The stats still show that if you buy a gun it is more likely to kill one of your family than an intruder / burglar/ whatever. All you buy is the illusion of security. I suppose you're right John. And yes, this latest nutcase up in New Town, Conn. did kill his mother before turning his demented mind to the 26 others he slaughtered. What might have happened had those 6 teachers been packing heat? I seriously doubt they would have shot each other or the kids.

Well, hand guns are illegal in England and Wales, aren't they? http://smallestminority.blogspot.com/2011/08/gun-ownership-up-in-england-wales.html

Not even to mention legal and illegal narcotics?
-
Man! I'm sure glad there aren't any guns in England or Wales today except for policemen. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/law-and-order/7922755/England-has-worse-crime-rate-than-the-US-says-Civitas-study.html

I think Ben Stein has a very good concept of our gun control problems here in the United States. http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=7418644n

While the world remains a basket case of air, water and ground pollution; things have changed vastly over the past few decades here in the states to help ease the burden. Up and through the 60s, towns and cities with "any" industry were guilty of contaminating and polluting every facet of our enviroment. Back in the 50s here in Cleveland, Oh. the city dump stretched for miles along Lake Eries south east shore know as shoreway drive. When city employees burned it at night, the fires and smoke could be seen in other town and cities on the lake. Even during the day overcast from the burn looked like a heavy fog in the city. And yes, you could smell it. Our river, the Cuyahoga; actually caught fire once from the oil, gas and other flammables being dumped into it. Ford Motor was fined millions for being unable to contain emissions from their foundry in Brookpark even though they spent many millions in trying to do so. Today, smaller countries along with American have come a long way in alleviating this problem, but there are miles of corrections left to get it right. I don't believe windmills and solar power, or getting rid of fossile fuels is the final solution. But check this out. http://greenliving.lovetoknow.com/Air_Pollution_Statistics

It isn't hard to believe. This kind of thing likely precedes Benedict Arnold's treachery. But in all honesty, when I opened the post my questions were just that, questions. Only later did they become political. Eventually this will go away and we will find something new to chew on.

Redefining Athiesm: You cannot fully accept until you fully understand.

Thought you'd left all of those critters up in Sissonville when you finally turned your night lite off for the last time? Well, guess I could be wrong. I suppose if a person has the faith and smokin' or snortin' some good stuff, it's hard to say what he might find in his garden. -

Well, if you can confirm their belief is only a fairy tale, I'll believe you. Fair? About what, don't they know Jack?
