Determination of arsenic using spectroscopy
John Cuthber replied to PMOCH's topic in Inorganic Chemistry
It's impossible to know what is going wrong unless we know exactly what you are doing. A few things spring to mind: Have you done this before and has it worked? Have you checked all the calculations for concentrations? Are you able to independently check any of the solutions? -
Your choice of type face, your use of brackets and the whole idea.

Olive oil doesn't mix with alcohol. You could try a different solvent like isopropanol. What are you trying to achieve?

Genetic philanthropy and the problems no one wants to talk about

Then you should have no problem citing evidence. -
Pair of great danes vs a tiger, who would win?
John Cuthber replied to Fanghur's topic in Ecology and the Environment
By whom? They can track lions, (lions stink) but I think the kill was made by a man with a gun (which also stink). Incidentally the "ridgeback" name comes from a defect loosely equivalent to spina bifida. -
I thought death was the price of believing the serpent. But, of course, if they were told that everything in the garden was "Good", then they would believe it.
-
Did God describe the garden as paradise to Adam and Eve? (I can't be bothered to check) If so, having put the serpent in there, God lied. Also, unless you say that the serpent had free will- which is debatable- then the snake was God's instrument for telling the lie. In any event God let the serpent say what it did. It's like blaming the telephone for lying to you, rather than the person speaking at the other end of the 'phone line.

When small input energy equals to massive output?
John Cuthber replied to John Harmonic's topic in Classical Physics
When a spark lights a forest fire the huge energy released is that stored by the trees absorbing energy from the Sun when they grew. -

I rather suspect the only winner would be whoever was selling tickets and/ or running the betting book. -
How does a battery powered infrared transmitter work?

There are dedicated chips for this http://www.unisonic.com.tw/html/IC/39.Remote-Controller-IC.htm -
Is it possible to construct a large functioning Gyroscope?
John Cuthber replied to John Harmonic's topic in Classical Physics
Pulsars are big, very heavy, and act like gyroscopes. http://www.jb.man.ac.uk/~mcdonald/mscthesis.pdf -
If you don't have a critical mass, then you don't have a reactor. If you suddenly assemble much more than a critical mass, you have a reactor- briefly. So there's a pretty stringent lower limit to the size of a reactor. However, with the right "fuel" that mass is under an ounce. https://www.euronuclear.org/info/encyclopedia/criticalmass.htm

That makes about as much sense as saying "we don't know this is a forest fire- because we don't know what started it". You are not being "skeptical", you are being illogical.

You think it's "wacky" to follow the evidence? That explains a lot. What facts?

Question on medical ethics in the private sector
John Cuthber replied to Prometheus's topic in Ethics
I hope the ethicist is a quick thinker. My understanding is that the process is more like this Does he gave a gold card? Yes- OK we operate No- Stabilise him + send him to the charity hospital down the road. -
Yes. And I know this in spite of what I was taught by the Bible. I know it is wrong to keep slaves. I know it is wrong to burn women to death because someone claims they are witches. I know it is wrong to murder men for being gay. People like me- who actually know right from wrong- had to work for millennia to get Christianity to realise these simple truths. Aren't you a bit embarrassed to be on the "slow learner" side of the argument?

Question on medical ethics in the private sector
John Cuthber replied to Prometheus's topic in Ethics
If the patient can afford it, then it's reasonable for the hospital to treat them, then send them the bill, on the basis that the patient is better off with their health, but less money. However, there's no contract, so I'm not sure it could be enforced. The patient could claim that they would have preferred to remain untreated- even if they consequently died. So, on the whole, I think Strange is right. The idea of appointing a guardian via the court is interesting but unrealistic. The timescale would usually prevent that option. -
Question on medical ethics in the private sector

I don't see why people should be punished for being guardian to those in need. -
According to Christianity, Evil exists because God- knowing what would happen- decided to put the serpent in the garden. Oddly the scripture doesn't explain why He did this. I guess He's just evil. Christianity then goes on to say that we were all in paradise until the only woman there decided not to follow the instructions. Perhaps it's just my observations of men and women, but that seems odd.
