  1. The seller here includes a copy of n invoice from a company that sold a blank about half that size... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/122342866851?lpid=122&chn=ps&adgroupid=41285909471&rlsatarget=pla-278687415243&adtype=pla&poi=&googleloc=1007064&device=c&campaignid=738225731&crdt=0 Casting a thick glass block is not a simple issue. It takes a long time- weeks- in the oven slowly cooling. http://atomictoasters.com/2011/11/making-the-200-inch-mirror-for-the-hale-telescope/ What do you want it for? There may be a simpler option.
  2. Let's do the experiment. Don't think of an elephant. If you thought of an elephant, even briefly, then you have evidence that humans can't reliably control their won thoughts. It's OK- you can think of elephants again now.
  3. Just to let people know... https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/feb/08/wikipedia-bans-daily-mail-as-unreliable-source-for-website
  4. No Among other problems, this happens
  5. There is a way to get a hotter flame- preheat the air and gas. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_hearth_furnace
  6. It's a fundamental aspect of human nature that we do unnatural things
  7. Why do people have this idea that some how "natural" is good? Death is natural.
  8. Last time I checked, pulling molecules apart was usually thought of as chemistry. I'm also fairly sure that an arc in lowish pressure water vapour will produce H+ and OH- (Among a stack of other things)
  9. Can you tell me what wisdom I am missing out on through my lack of a deity?
  10. If you want to think outside the box, the first thing you need to do is ditch religion- it's the most restrictive box of all. "Science is a great thing! It is not the Creator," Nobody said it was. "just a way of observing the fallout of the various rules/laws laid out for us to see order & outworking of a very Creative Mind." The clever bit is that science works, even though there is no evidence for that "mind" you keep trying to worthlessly add.
  11. I wouldn't call it relevant since G is known to 4 digits- not great precision, but they are working on it. Madmac seems to be including the worst estimates he can find ; is there some reason why he's avoiding the better ones? I mean what's the point of saying "A Russian source found a curious variation of up to 0.7% over time."? We have grandfather clocks that are good enough to disprove that idea.
  12. This bit "Operating off of that, it's guaranteed to reach an even number that will eventually collapse into 4,2,1 fairly quickly. " is the problem there- you have stated it, but not proved it. And it's pretty nearly a restatement of the original hypothesis. Only numbers of the form 2^n are guaranteed to fall to 4-2-1 that way. Most numbers are not of that form.
  13. It's traditional: Religion claims to answer the Big Questions- but, in fact, it can't even answer the little ones.
  14. How about you accept that He's a fairy story - a crutch for those who can't cope with reality. Cut to the chase- what evidence do you think you have that He exists?
  15. That looks a lot like an argument from personal incredulity. As such, it's a fallacy Bits of nature must have been designed by an idiot if they were designed at all. Have you seen how the human eye is put together? All the connections for nerves + blood vessels are in the way of the light. Madness as a design, but perfectly understandable if it evolved.
  16. OK, thanks for pointing out that it's nothing to do with science. Why are you posting it on a science web site?
  17. Do you have a map? Are you able to find Saudi Arabia and the countries near it? OK Now colour in the countries where Trump has banned people from. Then put marks on the map to show where- for example- the 9/11 terrorists came from. Have you noticed something? Yes- Trump has banned travel from the wrong countries. People who, like the 9/11 bombers, come from Saudi Arabia are allowed in. Now find another colour and shade in the countries where Trump has major business dealings. Do you notice something else? He hasn't banned travel where it would harm his business interests. So the idea that he has done this to prevent terrorists getting to the US is and "alternative fact"- or as we scientists call it, a lie. https://twitter.com/bpolitics/status/824722049243480065/photo/1?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw
  18. As far as I can tell the only thing Trump is doing differently is being honest about plutocracy, religious bigotry and xenophobia- which are cornerstones of Republican thinking.
  19. How small is small? The ones they sell for people who want hot coffee while hill-walking are actually pretty good.
  20. Since citing ones qualifications seems to be in fashion. I have to admit I never worked with a Nobel prize winner; but my mum taught one of the Spice Girls and, if you think about it, that's just as important. I am a chemist and, as such, I know what latent heat is. Since there are no phase changes of oxygen, nitrogen and CO2 near normal atmospheric conditions, there is no latent heat. The OP is simply factually incorrect. Worse than that, because the greenhouse effect has nothing to do with heat content of the atmosphere, the whole tennet of his argument is flawed. It's a straw man attack on a made up version of the greenhouse effect. This whole tread counts as "not even wrong" so we might as well close it.
  21. Never mind what some singer said. Shouldn't science (and the rest of us) be much more worried about about an administration that believes in "alternative facts"?
  22. "Modern processed foods are created to induce people to develop a craving for it and to overeat that! " Got any evidence? Remember that Henry (VIII) was fat and hat was nothing to do with modern food- just the simple fact that many people overeat if they can.
  23. To whom do they then send the bill? If it's the patient then it's not propaganda to point this out. The last figures I saw said that the US spends roughly twice as much per capita as most countries, without getting significantly better health outcomes
