  2. You have missed the point, possibly deliberately. It doesn't matter that some things work when you set x/0=x. What matters is that (as strange pointed out) some things do not work. Maths that doesn't repeatably work is useless.

OK, but can we sort out a typo? x/0=x x/1=x Whatever games we play it's clear that x=x OK so let's consider x/a It's clear from the first equation that a = zero and it's clear from the second that a = 1 Thus one = zero. As I said, that's a contradiction. Are you still labouring under the misapprehension that this is useful
  4. Then you have to accept that division by zero is undefined. Your attempts to say that both x/0 = x and that x/1=x lead to a contradiction.
  5. I have an alternative way of addressing the issue. x/0 = 42: always, for all x Obviously, it doesn't solve the pie problem, and it leads to contradictions. But it is very simple. Do you think it serves a purpose? (other than illustrating the problems with your reply)
  6. I just held a ruler up to the screen- the horizon is curved. however I can't show for certain that it isn't due to a distortion produced by the lens.

  8. Really; what? You have made the system more complicated and probably internally inconsistent, but you still can't use it to share out a pie. What purpose do you see in it? Are you admitting to trolling?
  9. Ask your friend why all the airlines are in on the act, and how? If you look at a globe and check out the advertised flight times between cities they all tally up with the distances (you have to average a return flight because of things like the jet stream). That simply wouldn't work unless the planet were really the same shape as the globe.

  11. Yes you did; here. If he has it and there's nobody to give it to then he keeps it. The point is that you can't tell me what he does with it because the fate of the money is not defined. That is because, whether you like it or not, division by zero is not defined.
  12. In general, you can't. If i want to make 100 ml of a 5% w/v solution of salt in water I know that I need 5 g of salt, but I don't know how much water I will need. Its going to be close to 100 ml. 95 ml is probably a better bet. 100 ml - whatever the volume of 5g of salt is would be better still, but there's no guarantee that it will be right. That's why someone invented the volumetric flask. You put 5 g of salt in it and some water to dissolve it. Then you wait for it to come back to room temperature, then you fill the flask up to the 100 ml mark. There isn't really enough information in your post to say exactly what you need to do because you have not said if those percentages are all m/m m/v or what.

That's as close as you seem to get to understanding why you can't divide by zero. "120000/0=120000(that no one gets)...........not "undefined"" Nobody said the money was undefined, what we say is that what happens to the money is undefined- so the process of division by zero is undefined. You can't have "money that nobody gets"; it makes no sense. " and not "infinity." Nobody said it was; what we said was that you can give none of it away to an infinite number of people. So, what you have is a tacit acceptance that the process is undefined, and a lot of straw men.

  15. Conway, When you have finished that could you help out my friend who is a lawyer (He's also not actually real- but that's not the point). A man died. my friend has to sort out the will. The man's will left the estate to be divided between his daughters. At the time he wrote it, there were 3 of them so the estate would be split in three. It was worth £120,000 so that's £120,000/3 =£40,000 each Unfortunately, long before he died one of the daughters died- Sad, but not a problem for my friend who simply split the money in two. Each surviving daughter stood to get £120,000/2 =£60,000. It seems the family was plagued by poor luck since another daughter dies the following year. Not a big deal for the lawyer- there's no arithmetic to do. The remaining daughter stood to inherit all £120,000. That's £120,000/1 in case you hadn't spotted the trend. But the last daughter died just before the man. He hadn't time to rewrite his will. The estate now has to be divided equally among zero surviving daughters. What happens to the money? Each of zero people receives £120,000/0 Who gets what? How does my imaginary lawyer friend do that?

  19. I'm always happy to admit that I'm wrong, when someone shows that is the case. You have not. Now, why do you keep claiming things that are obviously not true? Specifically,, so far, you have been wrong in saying; "If then b=0, then I can say anything / 0 is the thing itself." You said "If I tell you I have a dog or a poodle.....in neither case does my dog disappear, or become undefined." but nobody ever claimed that the dog was undefined- so it's a strawman. then there was "If I hold 5 apples and divide them by zero I still hold 5 apples If I hold 5 apples and multiply them by zero I still hold 5 apples." which is begging the question. Also, in spite of repeated asking, you have yet to answer this "What would you do to divide 5 apples by zero?" in respect of this If I hold 5 apples and divide them by zero I still hold 5 apples" So at best you have dreamed up an inconsistent, and therefore unhelpful variation on a theme of maths that lets you "divide by zero" because it arbitrarily changes what the words mean. Do you feel that's a worthy achievement?
  20. It would be easy enough to find that out. it would be illegal to make any use of that information.
  21. They are using the antibiotics to increase the rate at which the animals grow. it isn't a growth hormone, but the effect is similar. They don't use much because they don't need to. It is expensive and using more of it would not work better (they wouldn't grow faster). The advice given to people when they take antibiotics is that you should always take all of them. For a lot of times when people are prescribed antibiotics they are a waste of time and money (This is another thing that contributes to resistance) Sometimes people would be better off not taking them at all. if they did not give the animals low doses of antibiotics there would be no reason for the resistant bugs to develop. If they used higher levels of antibiotics there would be less chance of resistance developing. The problem is that there are two different "right" doses. The right dose for fast growth is a lot less than the right dose for antibacterial therapy.
  22. How do you think they made the alloy in the first place? It doesn't matter because the silver will dissolve but silver is denser than tin. Also, soda cans are not made of tin. And, if it was that easy, do you think I would have suggested electrolytic refining?

They aren't." that antibiotics are not (generally) used therapeutically in animal husbandry people were still posting as if that was the reason for them. viz "The reason they administer antibiotics is to keep the animal alive to the point of processing," and "to a farmer it might be cheaper and quicker to administer wide-spectrum high-dosage antibiotics than to make elaborate and time-consuming medical investigation about the most efficient treatment - because of low price, administering antibiotics can be used as a sort of insurance against much worse outcome for a farmer (on a farm, disease can spread quickly) - medical personnel (veterinarians) built habit of being easy on antibiotics (not sure why - is it from laziness or from pressure asserted on them)" Perhaps I should have used flashing colours because it seems that Jajrussel still hasn't got it since he says "The reason for giving antibiotics to animals is simply to help insure that their investment survives to processing " Now the fact that animals are treated with antibiotics and then get into the food chain means that people are exposed to the resistant bacteria that are encouraged by the farming practice. So it's important- if they were zoo animals it would mater less because most people wouldn't ever be exposed to the resistant bacteria.
