How do I make methane and ethane easily?
John Cuthber replied to JStriker's topic in Organic Chemistry
Something like this? http://mattson.creighton.edu/CH4/ -
Will we make it to the next presidential election.
John Cuthber replied to jduff's topic in Speculations
Not that it matters much, do you realise that parts 2 and 3 of that definition contradict eachother? If I have a secret plan to destroy the world, it's not a conspiracy until I get together with someone else, but if I tell them about my plans it's not a secret any more. Anyway, I have an alternative idea for the Mods to consider . Lets actually do some science. We can undertake an experiment to see if the prediction in the OP is correct. Lock the thread until 21st of April. If the prediction is true, this web page isn't going to make any difference. If we are still here, then we get to comment on the fact that that the initial suggestion was wrong. -
How do I make methane and ethane easily?
John Cuthber replied to JStriker's topic in Organic Chemistry
There's a much more crude answer to the question "How do I make methane". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flatulence but I guess that's more biology than chemistry. But I think it's difficult to answer the question sensibly unless you know the context. Is this question about laboratory preparation or industrial? What resources do you have? -
[News] Frank Baker 'survives spontaneous human combustion'
John Cuthber replied to BlueSpike's topic in Biology
No. Not least because he refused to take a polygraph test. -
"I know machinations are in place to take away faith from man" No you don't. "Since the creation of the internet, faith based religion has been in decline." True, but irrelevant. Religion was in trouble before the internet came to be. "The internet or the force that is the web has always existed." Plain wrong, as Sir Tim Berners Lee. "All the technological advances through history has been used to control end user interfaces." Apart from the ones that gave us better medicine or more reliable crops or a host of other stuff. And so on. Does it not trouble you that your belief causes you to write stuff that's plainly not true and doesn't make sense?

Will we make it to the next presidential election.
John Cuthber replied to jduff's topic in Speculations
"Science is the belief in the ignorance of experts." "Do any of you know the full plan to be inacted by this date?" Make up your mind. Let's see what has happened 10 days from now. -
Preparation of ferrous ammonium sulphate
John Cuthber replied to pyroglycerine's topic in Inorganic Chemistry
Ammonium iron (I) sulphate wouldn't exist. In general Fe(I) compounds are a bit of an oddity. As far as high school chemistry is concerned, they don't exist.- 3 replies

That there is a problem which we need to tackle.

A sign sent to any one person (or even a small group) is not going to work very well. A sign that is "transient" won't really work either. If God writes "of course I am real" in huge letters on the moon the, then OK, I will have to give it some serious thought. But I might still think it's more likely to be an alien race with a strange sense of humour.

If the Russian Government / Mr Putin wanted to get people to write propaganda for them on web sites like this one, I would expect them to do a much better job. For example, saying "Putin is right because he did something which supported the church's belief" is going to get laughed at in much of the Western world- especially on science web pages. The KGB would do a better job.

No, it makes you arrogant and ill-informed.

The "hot gas" explanation for the flash makes sense to me.

To be fair, it's a valid point. If the compressibility of water was actually zero the speed of sound would be infinite- violating relativity. When they say iut's incompressible, they mean the compressibility is too small to bother with in most calculations or measurements.

That is interesting data. Would you like to compare it with this data? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(nominal)_per_capita

"If I saw a naked man on the street,I would have been afraid of him" Why? What does he have that you haven'T Is it that he has courage? "President Putin does his best.. He tries to stop the abominations. He is a strong Russian leader." These things you call abominations are not the real problem in Russia. A bunch of gay men will not endanger the Russian economy. Why does Putin waste his time talking about them? Is he trying to distract attention from the real problems? However, if you want a strong leader, perhaps Russia should not have killed the Tsar. It is too late to bring him back. But we have some of his relatives here in England. Perhaps Russia could borrow some of them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Royal_Family They are all related to the old Tsar so it would be traditional.

The "flames" might be the result of a light gas gun (burning H2) , but they call it a rail gun. Who cares? It doesn't seem to pack much more punch than an anti tank weapon.

"President Putin seems just what Russia needs. A strong leader, who stands up for national interests, without endangering world peace" Are you serious?

Mach 7 is about 2310 m/s So 1/2 m v^2 is about 60MJ About the energy of 10 Kg of TNT Or roughly half a (US) gallon of gasoline. So, re "This explodes like a nuclear weapon, without the radiation or the fallout. No explosives." Nope, not really. "This article is from my favorite foreign affairs site. ." I invite you to consider changing your favourite site to one which can do elementary physics. "You will have to register, but you will be able to view ten free articles every month, and comment on them" Why would I bother?

I refuse to be judged by anything I consider to be a figment of your imagination but, if He doesn't like gay people, why does He make so many of them? And, re "in the Soviet Union such mess we never had,we had a 100% literacy, free education and medicine, the Soviet Union was the first in space" For a start I simply don't believe you got 100% literacy. Some people have learning difficulties such that they will never read. However, the UK had the makings of a space programme http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Streak_(missile) We had free healthcare http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Health_Service We had had free education for about 30 years when the Soviet Union was invented. http://www.educationengland.org.uk/documents/acts/1891-elementary-education-act.html So, why do you think the West has anything to learn?

Well, I say once again that in Russia you may say that Putin is bad,for you it will not be in prison. No http://en.wikipedia....oning_and_death

Strictly speaking, the reaction between oxygen, water and nitrogen does give out heat. It does not happen readily. That's just as well for us. If it did, there would be no oxygen in the air and the sea would be full of dilute nitric acid. Perhaps we shouldn't look into this

Because it doesn't burn.

No, those 9 squares give you 4 dividing lines (2 horizontal and 2 vertical) 4 lines give you 4 places that could contain the "centre of attention". http://photoinf.com/General/KODAK/guidelines_for_better_photographic_composition_rule_of_thirds.html

Do you know that light is a form of electromagnetic radiation?
