I wonder why JohnStu bothered to reply. His replies contradict eachother (and also what's known from space travel.) Anyway, there is a difference. An object of non-zero size would be stretched a bit in all the cases except the first.

OK, I won't. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron(II)_fluoride So, you plan to use something that's really very soluble in water (more than 1 in 1) as a rustproofing agent. Enjoy.

Foucault pendulums not fit to to Einstein Theory
John Cuthber replied to rusek's topic in Modern and Theoretical Physics
From the point of view of an ant on the pendulum, it stays still and the world moves round it. However, if the ant sets up his own little pendulum it will show that he is moving. -

Last time I checked the pendulum didn't have a lot to say about "luminous intensity". Are you sure you know what you are talking about? -
Go ask the local high school if you can borrow a Geiger counter or an electroscope.

How many drones would it take to stop a hurricane?
John Cuthber replied to Myuncle's topic in Engineering
So, you know the government gave up on it. You know that Gates and his friends didn't even start. And you still think it's sensible. Why? Also, as has been pointed out, modification of a hurricane is legal suicide. -

Lots. But, if you read the thread, you already knew that. So why are you asking again? Are you hoping that reality will change to accommodate your preference? -

How many drones would it take to stop a hurricane?

So to ship 600,000,000,000 cubic metres of ice would only need about 3 million ships for each hurricane. And one of these http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonov_An-225 can shift something like 250 tonnes so you only need about 2 billion of them (converted for drone operation obviously, or you would need to train a third of the world's population as pilots and I don't think you could find enough people for the co pilot and other crew) Interestingly, the fuel capacity of that plane is about the same as it's carrying capacity so they would need roughly half a trillion tonnes of fuel. That's something like 3 trillion barrels of oil (for each of about half a dozen big hurricanes so 18,000,000,000,000 barrels in total) The world production is about 100 million barrels a day or 30 billion barrels a year so you just need to raise oil production rates by a factor of a thousand fold or so. Well, I'm surprised that nobody has done it before. What were they waiting for? (BTW, if I have misplaced the odd factor of a thousand I don't care) -

Many Atlantic creatures prefer their water salty. Please don't add that much fresh water (as ice). -
Air and ammonia passed over a hot catalyst will give wet nitrogen (with a little argon etc). It's difficult to avoid the production of NOx which may be a problem.

Do you know the typical specific area of modern precious metal catalysts catalysts? "BASF offers Porous Activated Aluminas, Catalyst Substrate Spheres (CSS), High Surface Area (>300 m2/gram) to maximize surface area..." from http://www.basf.com/group/corporate/en/brand/CATALYST_SUBSTRATE_SPHERES Other catalyst supports are available.

I think I may have made this point before. I'm unfamiliar with the system by which the US pays out state benefits to those who need them ( the unemployed, elderly, sick and so on). However I presume that they need to present some form of ID in order to claim. I suggest that that ID is good enough to be used as voter ID. It would save a lot of money because many people already have this sort of ID and wouldn't need another ID card. I wonder what the Republicans would think about that

The republicans are extreme. It's just that the democrats are fairly extreme right wing too, so it's hard to see the difference. -

Calling all Great Minds: The Theory of Everything
John Cuthber replied to Anthem (0)'s topic in General Philosophy
"1. We don’t see in three-dimensions, we see intwo-dimensional surface area. We canonly see the OUT sides of objects." Ignoring the typos (which are an example of something that needs tidying up) that premise is clearly false (if you forgive the pun). I am inside my house and I can see it. "What we call dimensions are determined by theinversion of INside and OUTside. Oddsand Evens, binary." (The space bar is usually at the bottom of the keyboard- learn to use it or you risk looking like an idiot. Many people don't read long complicated posts which they perceive as having been written by idiots) The premise is simply wrong. They are not determined by inside an out, but by how big something is or by an arbitrary choice. For example latitude and longitude are determined from the North pole and the Greenwich meridian. "3. We call this effect relativity, and it is the motion whichmanufactures reality." No, you might call that relativity but nobody else does. Seriously, if you think they do then cite some examples. Otherwise just accept that since your premises are wrong there's not much hope for the rest of your ideas. "My capacity is only one of a guide. I have an astute mastery of the subjects " But not the space bar? You expect us to believe that? Really? The sensible thing to do with a "theory" that is based on three false premisses is to tidy it up and put it in the bin. -
Strawman. I didn't swear anything of the sort. I did say that the guy was dead. On this matter I'm prepared to take your word for it. it was, after all, you who asked who killed them. Now stop stalling and answer the question. Who do you think did what and when do you think they did it?
-
We can't refute your suspicions until you tell us what they are. I can swear categorically that he's dead because someone killed him. Now, why don't you tell us what it is that you suspect so we can look into whether it's plausible or not. Who do you think did what and when do you think they did it?

Once they see the price of making the ice they won't bother. BTW, making ice doesn't just dump heat, it takes energy too, so with the current energy supply it generates a whole lot of CO2 to add to the energy of the storms in the first place. Or, you can move out of the way. -

He's dead because someone killed him. It's not clear who did that but it wasn't Mr Obama: he wasn't there at the time. "Obama's cabinet has said nothing that rings of truth." What leads you to believe that what was said isn't true? Is it just innuendo from Fox news or do you actually have credible evidence of dishonesty? I remind you that I asked this a lot and you were not able to answer. You just evaded the question. "Or are the Republicans still just grasping at straws to hurt this administration during the coming election campaign?" Clearly. " I'm surprised there hasn't been more discussion on the issue." If there was a discussion you wouldn't have seen it because it wouldn't have been on Fox. Are you beginning to realise that there's a pattern here?

How many drones would it take to stop a hurricane?

So, now all you have to do is calculate how much ice they need. Then you can realise that the only way to deal with a hurricane is to get out of the way. -
Does it really matter what Rigney thinks happened? He wasn't there. He doesn't know and his source of "information" is Fox, without whom he would probably be better off . If we really want to know what he thinks, we can have a look on Fox "news". Or, we can look at things like the CIA's reports and the eye witness testimony and the evidence and Reuters and find something near the truth.
