  1. "Metallic cerium is prepared by metallothermic reduction techniques, such as by reducing cerium fluoride or chloride with calcium, or by electrolysis of molten cerous chloride or other cerous halides. " from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cerium
  2. Why do you think " the government is and has been spraying chemicals into the atmosphere, ".
  3. Why do people breathe oxygen, I have heard that it's toxic. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxygen_toxicity And the same is true of lots of other things, iron, selenium copper cobalt and zinc for example.
  4. A little background to a book about wizards dragons and elves can be found here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lord_of_the_Rings#Plot_summary The difference is that Tolkien never claimed he was telling the truth.
  5. lol
  6. 2 points, First, as has been pointed out, the Russians must have been part of any fake landing. It would have been trivial to point a radio telescope at the moon and not get a signal from the lunar landing party. As you say, they were bitter enemies of the US so they would have published such an observation loudly and clearly. Second, have you sought treatment for your delusional state?
  7. If I offer you a prize, can you believe that I have an elephant in my garden? As beliefs go it has the advantage of being technically perfectly possible. I don't expect you to die for your belief, just pass a lie-detector test. Of course, if you are 4 years old I can probably convince you that I got him from a friend who works at the zoo (they had more than they could find space for). But can an adult choose to believe this ?
  8. Rusek's posts are not that clear but I think he is saying that you can (in principle) use an interferometer as an accelerometer. I'm not sure if that's true or not, but it's not interesting. There are easier ways of finding out if you are accelerating or not. They can't tell acceleration from gravity, but I don't think the interferometer can either.
  9. 8000 vs 1500 is what I'd call disproportionate especially when the 8000 contains nearly twice the % of children. BTW, has this issue got anything to do with the original topic?
  10. I don't think it would and I don't think anyone would do that.
  11. I don't know. The "start" of this was 4000 years ago. But I know who is responsible for the disproportionate retaliation.
  12. Unfortunately, a copy of my birth certificate shows I was born in England (though my dad was born in Kenya about 80 years ago). So I'm unable to stand for US presidency. Also I remind you of the total mess that happened last time we had an Oxford educated chemist as prime minister. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poll_Tax_Riots http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falklands_Conflict http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UK_miners%27_strike_(1984%E2%80%931985) And last, but by no means least, the wife swapping party from hell. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Reagan%27s_-_Thatcher%27s_c50515-16.jpg Of course, that might all be a smokescreen to stop anyone realising that I am actually a politician. In any event, feel free to answer the questions.
  13. You really are missing the point aren't you? No matter who wins the elections Obama still won't be a communist or a Muslim or whatever will he? The difference it will make is that some people who have lied about him before will be able to do so again from a position of more authority.
  14. What Obama said was that there should be a more even balance. That seems reasonable in the light of the figures. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israeli%E2%80%93Palestinian_conflict#Fatalities_1948.E2.80.93present Why unreservedly support the side that's responsible for more deaths and, in particular, for more civilian deaths?
  15. Damn! Pressed the wrong button. Please consider yourself +1 on this. (and can we alter the system so you can correct mistakes like that please?)
  16. Not a sensible assumption was it. Now, please answer the questions.
  17. Old joke alert! There are 10 sorts of people in the world; those who understand binary; those who understand ternary, and those who don't. My 'phone number (just the local bit of it) is 7 digits long. In binary it would be 22 digits, and I'd never remember it. On the other hand, in base 9999999 it would only be 1 digit, but I'd need to remember the values and order of 9999999 digits. Base 10 is a compromise and relates to nothing more significant than our having 10 fingers.
  18. Firstly, can you show that older halogen lamps didn't meet those requirements. Secondly, I'm not blithering, I didn't need to look it up because I already had the figures. If you like looking stuff up then here's some numbers that prove my point. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incandescent_light_bulb#Efficiency_and_environmental_impact halogen lamps are about 3.5% efficient as opposed to incandescent lamps at about 2 or 2.5% What they are not is 30% efficient. They are 30% better than something that's bloody awful. It's not baby steps, it's a serious step in the wrong direction. LEDs and CFLs run at about 10 to 15% so 3.5% really isn't helping the planet.
  19. It misses the point that a hydrogen flame would "suck" because the water vapour produced would condense on the cold glass. Wax (as in the candle) will really produce some contraction in volume. And, when I was at school, you would lose marks in a physics exam for saying that anything sucks. There is still air in the glass, the only thing it can do is exert a pressure outwards: it can't "pull". It's the external air pressure that pushes.
  20. Semjase, I think you meant to say "A dinosaur UFO in the garage is a way out hypothetical without evidence you couldn't accept it, if it's theoretical possibility you couldn't rule it out. It's not a fair comparison to UFO dinosaur phenomena " unless can show me the fossils of UFOs. As for "I think it's time for our civilization to grow up and face the reality that they may be other advanced civilizations in this universe.". I already accept it. There's no sensible denial that there may be other intelligent life in the universe, I also believe that it's quite likely. However what seems unrealistic is that they always turn up in some deserted field and draw patterns then nip round to some poor old sod and play with their rectal probes. FFS, if they can cross interstellar space you would think they can turn up stealthily if they wanted to or, if they wanted to announce their presence, all they need is a decent radio transmitter. In any event, none of this has anything to do with the title of the thread. You have not cited an example of linear momentum not being conserved. If you can do that please do so, otherwise drop the subject and stop wasting the site's bandwidth.
  21. Yes, I'm serious, so could you please answer the question. The usual interpretation of "but only if you say them fast" is a reference to the debating trick of saying something false or questionable and then rapidly saying something uncontroversial before anyone has a chance to question the first bit. For a start, it doesn't work on-line because people have plenty of time to read what you have said and point out the flaws. For an encore, it's usual for people to follow up an allegation of using that trick by pointing out what the false or questionable statement was. Rigney hasn't. probably because he can't.
  22. I also rest my case on crop circles.
  23. The decimal point is redundant because it's always the second character. The same sort of thing is true of the X10^ However you still need some character to distinguish the mantissa from the exponent unless you decide (in advance) how many digits the mantissa will be.
  24. Did you read that before you posted it? What did you think it meant?
