Proof that god exists and he has a sense of humor
John Cuthber replied to ecoli's topic in The Lounge
" Around 30 inches long, they look bizarrely like huge grey penises" What do you mean "huge"? -
You are, clearly, entitled to stand on the side of the fence labelled as "conspiracy theorist" if you like. Of course, Obama's place of birth only matters because of the constitution. If you are prepared to ignore that (in the manner of someone removing early voting rights from some, but not all citizens) then he's a legitimate president anyway.
-
I guess it depends what you mean by "still in question" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barack_Obama_citizenship_conspiracy_theories

It was (reasonably) fair until Ohio's republican governor decided to change it. Obama wants to tell them to change it back. Incidentally, re "I haven't found truth in anything that whole liberal tribe has spawned." How about Obama is not a Moslem and he was born in the USA? The interesting thing about those truths is that they were pointed out in direct response to lies from their opponents.
-
As far as I can tell, what he said was that, under the US constitution, all citizens have equal voting rights, even if they are a "every wino, derelict (or) lazy bum" and that this state of affairs should continue for those who are from Ohio.

Intelligent Design & the Odds of Life
John Cuthber replied to somecallmegenius's topic in Speculations
Iff it were established that a natural cause was unlikely then you would have a point. However there is nothing unlikely about it. ID is made up. The courts have ruled on it. The nature of the universe is not decided by your beliefs. -
Intelligent Design & the Odds of Life
John Cuthber replied to somecallmegenius's topic in Speculations
This is logically inconsistent. If abiogenesis is impossible then nothing could have created the " intelligent, living creator". -
It's an insulator.

That's not a contradiction, it's a misunderstanding The two sides of this " slower when moving = slow motion" are not actually equal. If I watch a "slow motion" video of a hummingbird , it doesn't make the real bird slow down. The speeds of video and the bird are not actually related. So time can run slower in a moving frame without any problems (and experiments show that it actually does).

Since most people who go swimming don't get ear infections there must be some underlying difference between you and the rest of the population. You might want to talk to your doctor about what that difference might be and what (if anything) you can do about it.

Someone does a good job (as it happens, in the entertainment business) and gets paid for it. They get taxed on that income. Where is the story here?
-
Perhaps, but it would be silly to assume that they were both "Inspired by the supreme being" without looking at the idea that they cheated.

When I was at school, if 2 kids got the same wrong answer it was assumed that they were copying. http://lolwtfcomics.blogspot.co.uk/2012/06/christians-y-u-not-at-least-original.html (It's not, of course, totally accurate, but it illustrates the point.)

Cherrypicking may be a threat. Videoing still isn't. There isn't any real difference between me saying the service was bad and me showing a video that indicates that the service was bad. Both could be misleading. In any event, there's no real reason to suppose that his intention was to do anything but go to McD's to eat. Accordingly, there was little reason to ask him to leave (Though that is, of course, still the right of the owner or their agent).

The arrival of the IRS agent ends the ignorance and the bliss simultaneously. I don't need to plan how to answer the questions: I just answer them honestly. It worked once... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-16740033

Just because you don't witness god doesn't mean he isn't there.
John Cuthber replied to MrAndrew1337's topic in Religion
For what it's worth, this tells you what happens when the same imaginary student meets a better imaginary prof. http://www.bowness.demon.co.uk/brain.htm Incidentally, a good reason to quote it is so the OP can't change it and claim "That's not what I wrote". It seems pretty likely that, in this case, the OP is a liar. -
If the "power of prayer" is actually real, then it is part of the nature that God (if He exists) created. It is, therefore perfectly open to exploration by experiment. The experiment was done. It failed to show any effect. This shows that the power of prayer is either small (i.e. below the detection limit of the experiment) or non-existent. So praying is either pointless or nearly pointless.

"You're ignorant. How do you know that you're dying because of something you did, much less that it was that tasty sweet drink you had hours ago? " You don't know what, but you know that something is wrong. So you have (some) knowledge so you are not ignorant. Anyway I'm off on holiday soon so I don't care.

Ron Pearson and his "physics of survival"
John Cuthber replied to Alexander1304's topic in Speculations
Yep, sure does. -
Uncharacteristically, I find myself in total agreement with JohnB on this point.

Well, if these data are right http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Distribution_of_Annual_Household_Income_in_the_United_States.png then his choices of examples are above the household incomes of about 90% of the population. Assuming he's right (and it would be good if someone checked that) then he's scaremongering for about 10% of the electorate. Perhaps the other 90% will look at this video and thing "Great- maybe some of that tax money will get back to me somehow- better schools form my kids or better healthcare. I'm voting for Obama!" Seriously, he only gives examples of people with incomes roughly 5 times and 3 times the national median income. No mention of "normal" people. He also fails to say what that money will be used for. I'm leaning towards the idea that he's a right wing nut case- but it's possible that he genuinely doesn't know how most people live in which instance he's just very poorly educated.

That's OK, if the data are normally distributed you can calculate pi from the area under the probability distribution curve.

It would be quicker (and give the same result) if you missed out the sqrt function. Also, an equivalent experiment has been done. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffon's_needle#Estimating_.CF.80

You do know that's just a made up story don't you? As such, it's not terribly convincing evidence.
